I loved the serial called Patiala Babes. Its sad that it was pulled off air. It was a very interesting show about child abuse and childhood traumas, toxic divorces, ex-partners, custody battles. After Covid that show was cancelled mid-air. Its a shame that such good shows never get enough appriciation.

@@saumyapathak5865Audience is the one to be balmed too . Many good shows off air in just 3-4 months but that stereotypical shows keep running for years because they have huge viewership. And yes everyone has their choices and preferences and van watch whatever they want but when people complain that no good shows are left I always laugh at it because at the end of the day these same people aren't supporting the few good shows that we have..

There were some shows that were different. Surprisingly star plus was at the forefront in bringing different but uplifting content but sadly trp aunties did not appreciate it Pow bandhi yudh ke, airlift, tamannah, mariam khan reporting live(before leap) Star bharat nimki mukhiya, kaal bhairav rahasya, Currently sab has lot of different but impactful content Vanshaj, dhruv tara, pushpa impossible, waghle ki duniya, before we even had Aladdin masala version, madam sir

Learning Sakshi Tanwar was overworked to the extent she used to faint and still was the first one on sets and there is not a single person in the industry in and out who doesn't have tremendous love and respect for softens the blow that she is the most underrated actress of our country and got severely underutilized over the years.

I don't know if anyone remembers it but Sony Ent had launched Yash Raj Television shows in 2010 with some refreshing shows in their lineup. I was a huge fan of Mahi Way especially because it was the first time you had a plus size female lead who had an actual job. Out of all the TV channels in India, I feel SET India has the better lineups of evolved shows even if they did dabble in the saas bahu department. Shows like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, Bhaskar Bharti, Ladies Special, Mahi Way, Reporters and recently Mere Dad Ki Dulhan and Vanshaj are some that go beyond the Saans Bahu aspect

The show had a lot of potential, and it was even gripping as a drama show , if one would have seen it like that only. I would always remember Sapnon Ki Chhalaang because it inspired me a fair lot, even as a man. When we started this documentary a few months ago, I had a very solid narrative in mind, points of criticism and reluctant awe subtly concealed in my list of questions before our very first interview. However, each interview slowly but firmly chipped away at my elitist biases, and taught me a lot more about these shows, which have resonated with an admittedly large audience in India. Every one of these incredibly intelligent television creators and actors had an immense respect for their audiences, subverting the gaze often bestowed of women homemakers, who make a large part of TV's audience. Speaking with some of the most brilliant minds in television led to a deeply personal transformation for me, which allowed me to understand the many people close to me who love these shows. I hope this documentary starts a respectful conversation about Indian television for us all.

Same. I think the reputation TV has today was not because of the original shows but the repetition of concepts and the lack of adaptation to changing times and culture. Now this docu is about hindi TV only. Every state has its own TV shows. Some did well while some were mind numbingly dumb. I wish someone would make a video about the different styles of shows each state has produced and how the dominant storylines have changed over time!

Indian television actors deserve nothing short of utmost respect and admiration. With their tireless dedication and exceptional acting skills, they breathe life into their characters, keeping their shows running on Indian television for years. It's no secret that, as time goes on, the scripts often lose their initial sparkle and lose their way. However, these talented actors manage to maintain their grip on their characters, effortlessly carving out a special place in the hearts of their audience.

And ofcourse it is that one place which has a plethora of female protagonists and the gaze is often ‘female’. It is worth studying and exploring more. For instance, women in comic roles on TV - shows like FIR, Idhar - Udhar etc

I don’t think the people who look down on Indian tv are necessarily only looking down because of the regressive nature. It’s also because of how bad the writing is! If you watch any ep of any series, it’s diluted to the point where the whole story of an ep can be told in 1 line but they are saying it for 20 minutes. And I as a urban 20 something might not be their key demographic but my mother who is 50 and comes from a small town, they can’t hold her attention either. She usually is on her phone and actually uses all the serials as a background noise. I have been asking her to watch kdramas instead for the longest time and and recently I showed her that they come in Hindi dub and ever since then, she has dropped at least half of her Hindi serials and doesn’t like any distractions while she’s watching kdrama 😂

It was actually so nice to see this documentary because I only have negative memories of Indian TV series ever since I was young. I used to question why my mom was watching women hating and manipulating each other. Even at that age I knew it was toxic and unhealthy. It made me want to NEVER get married or live with in-laws. Drop the toxic saas-bahu shit and promote healthier in-law relationships. Or just create shows about other things! It's such a refreshing take, because we generally don't have such breakdown analysis of Indian Television Industry, like we have for Indian Film Industry. I remember enjoying these daily soaps with mom, when I was very young, but then i grew up and suddenly something happened when i started looking down upon these same shows, i even asked my mom to stop seeing them. Maybe, it was when Ekta Kapoor started making her cult shows, but then it's not her complete fault as well, she did what was profitable at that point of time, and what she felt stuck a chord with the masses. Ekta Kapoor went into the supernatural genre of chudail, bhoot, and naagins, because it's what people wanted to see, for eg- housewives wanted to just distract themselves after a hard day's labour by watching these supernatural shows, and it did help them in someway to forget about their daily struggles, and get into a world of magic, where women can actually do whatever they want, unlike the orthodox society which restraints them at different points in life. Loved the video though, it was nostalgia, and brought back so many of my childhood memories, sitting with mom on sofa, in living room, and watching these daily soaps, while completing my school homework. Now, I am in university, living in hostel, away from my parents and home, and missing those days so much. :(( Good job @swaddle, keep it up! 💛✨

What writers like Vinta nanda are unable to understand is that those saas- bahu serials gave representation to a vast majority of people & though *overly dramatised* yet showed the issues faced by them.. and I also disagree with her on her point that those huge families represent extremely rich people.. she seems quite unaware of way of life in small towns.. and OTT won't change a thing..ladies in my family swear by anupama.. they are not going anywhere!

Speaking from the perspective of a person who had to sit through many Bengali soaps with her mother , I've seen this worrying trend where the hero is clearly the douchebag in the situation but the villainess is evil-coded and the heroine is accused , victimised and no one addresses the actual problem of the hero not speaking his kind and behaving like the entitled brat with a trauma kink he actually is 🙂.

Nivedita is right. The producers who tried to clone Ekta's shows have multiplied the regression by thousand folds. If you watch Kyunki, Kahaani and other K shows, you will see that they were quite progressive compared to today's shows. Only problem with Ekta's shows was the overdramatic editing. Btw, bringing people from death was due to huge public demand. Rebirth is a truth of Hinduism, so showing it was not regressive at all. Ekta's protagonists were all pioneers of feminism but in a loud and dramatic way.

@@faeezparkar9731 Earlier TV shows used to be for a certain class of audience. 80s and early 90s were the times when only rich households used to have television set. They had access to all sort of international content as well. So subtle and forward-thinking content were produced to serve their taste. Ekta had also produced that kind of progressive content in mid 90s, like: Itihaas, Koshish, Hum Paanch etc. Star Plus Hindi was launched to serve content to the masses. That’s why KBC, Kyunki like shows were introduced. When Kyunki was launched, the motto was to explore the uneasy and rocky relationship between saas and bahu. It was a fresh concept back then and it grabbed attention of female audience. Then it became so huge that other producers started copy pasting it. Kyunki, Kahaani had discussed about many social issues as well. For example: In Kyunki, Baa was enrolled in a Fashion school at the age of 80. Many old women wrote down to Smriti Irani how that track was inspiring to them that they can have a new life at that age also. TV got ruined when shitty shows like Gopi Bahu, Sasural Simar Ka came on the floor.

Ekta actually bought women empowerment shows if you have seen kahani ghar ghar ki,kahin toh hogay, badhe acche lagte hai season 1- these all were blockbusters and kahani especially from first till the end it was a progressive show. Earlier ekta focused on her shows a lot but now it's like in 2023 the stories are not good because she is focusing on movies like dream girl 2

I watched these shows because of my mother and let me tell you none of these shows since 2000 were progressive, female oriented or morally true. In fact shows before Ekta’s shows were more modern and relatable to the people of this country. I belong to a lower middle class family and knows many lower class families too and due to such stupid TV shows they have stared dressing and behaving like these onscreen Bahu’s.

What a documentary. Today's urban youth needed to hear this perspective as well. I don't think this content is doing our society any favours. Tagore's heroines were 50 times more progressive over a 100 years back but this is the sad reality of many traditional households compounded by this disgusting content that pretends to be pseudo progressive but regresses back to the same cookie cutter formula. That said, this perspective gives this format and it's hard working creators the chance to share their side of the story as well.

At this juncture when we are talking about the saas bahu sagas and degeneration of ITV it is also imp to look at the rise of pakistani tv shows which are trying to reflect on their society, not all of them are progressive but the kind of storytelling without being very artificial has an appeal and may be that is why their stories are working and attracting people from all generations. ITV has digressed from reality a little too much, so much so that it now feels unintelligent to engage with it, so maybe real stories simply told can still do the magic.

i do think pakistani shows are more realistic but not necessarily progressive. like few shows are progressive but most are not. like tere bin, mere humsafar and many popular shows have actually not been progressive much. Also most paki shows tend to revolve around saas bahu, cousin marriage concepts just with a more realistic touch w the exception of a few shows.

It's interesting to see such a detailed analysis about TV industry. We were fan of TV serial like hum paanch . But after the saas bahu times, the stories became very slow and dramatic. In one episode there was hardly much progress in the story. I believe that was the reason where following the story were become boring. Excellent compilation about the thought patterns behind these serials.

It’s interesting to note how portrayal of men by these female creators were made…you get to see the range…and the fact that they take the passenger seat in the story…you might be a businessman you might be the patriarch of the family but this story is not about you, it’s about the woman even if it’s about her doing the daily chores, having family dispute, etc. now when I look back I feel so guilty for brushing off these serials saying oh it’s just your typical saas bahu so trivial… why it’s trivial? Bcs it’s associated with women and their lives??? Man we need to talk about our television more 🙃

Grew up watching a lot of Indian TV, to say that it didn’t have youth representation is wrong when star one existed there was a lot of shows which the younger lot loved, remember, dil mil gayye, miley jab hum tum, Geet and lots more. Star plus had some good shows to like Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, ek hazaroon mein Meri behna. Hum paanch was a classic. Their was Sharabhai Vs Sarabhai. There was a lot so can’t say that the younger generation didn’t watch TV. They don’t make any such shows anymore which is why much of the youth have stopped watching, the amount of DRAGGING dramas do that makes alot of people stop watching. Give us a numbers of episodes and end it don’t keep going years and years and years. Give it an end. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai? I don’t have been for how many years. Don’t know which generation they are even on now or which year it should be technically in the show. That’s where the problems lies. Too long shows

yes!!! I think if we make shows weekly or biweekly instead of daily and have a fix number of episodes only, not based on TRP. These things will create quality shows. Imagine putting out a show daily, it's almost impossible to make good quality anything with this deadline.

I have not seen television serials for now more than a decade except for few clips that I come across insta every now and then and few seen in community viewing scenario. But I wouldn't deny there was time when I would see almost every serial of star plus five days a week like an addict. Today sometimes I want to revisit few shows that were popular and different at that time and somehow I missed it like Left right left or Jassi but the number of episodes scare me. I would rather start a korean show of 16 episodes or pakistani show of 25 episodes or OTT series than Hindi Tv serial of 250+ episodes. There are many good shows but they stretch it for too long.

Lift and carry & Romantic scenes are really amazing in the Hindi Serials..it revolutionized to such an extent that the trend has become a rage in the serials of other regional languages as well..!! However, a lot of drama needs to be avoided and there should be a need to focus on strong content relating to social issues and taboos.

Its really sad that as audience ppl can see only saas bahu dramas to sit nd troll.. Meanwhile when really good shows like sapnon ki chhalaang is completely ignored! Channel is also at major fault coz they delayed the launch by 4-5 months, did almost 0 promotion of show nd gave it a 9.30 slot which is already cursed just coz its from a smaller production coz its anyway gonna be cut off in between coz of KBC! They had to cut quite a few scenes nd also had soo many tracks left to shoot but channel was adamant on starting KBC apparently as always! I know its all business but having said that the channel cannot be unfair to their own show! Even here with all the research they did sapnon ki chhalaang is completely unnoticed coz its a smaller production house nd instead they include only ranjan shahi, ekta kapoor, other big names, saas bahu dramas!!

Can we please talk about how women are represented in these stories now? Writers like Rajesh Chawla always write characters where women are pitched against each other and are made to belong to extremes---either they're superhuman good people, or they are pathetic losers who think they can only claim their place in their families or society by putting other women down. I'm a woman---I studied in a girls only school for 10 years before transferring to a co-ed school then went on to university. I have only experienced support from other girls at every point. We had our disagreements and fights---but we always stood together for each other against anyone else. Why do these writers create such horrid characters???? Are they saying the women in their lives are like this? Are they getting their inspiration from their own family members that they write such poor character arcs for women?? They have the opportunity to tell good stories and they CHOOSE to write this rubbish.
