It's been more than 15 years since Ubisoft has announced a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil and while we had some trailers shown at E3 in the past, for the past 4 years there have been no updates on the game. In this video I present a short summary of development hell this game is going through that we know about.

I suppose it's not really for players, but rather for investors. Like hey, look, we are working on a game. And it doesn't matter if the game is actually developed or not. Same thing with that ridiculous TES6 announcement from Bethesda in 2018, the game entered early development just recently, five years after announcement.

This was the only game I've basically been waiting for. I never wanted to play starfield, or cyber punk...weird how the only game I'm excited for never came out. This is why I hate games now. Who wants to play god of war or spiderman???? Those games SUCK SO MUCH

@@sampicano I wouldn't say those games suck. Personally I loved both games. They both looked amazing and had great story telling. However, the game play is VERY repetitive. I suppose it depends on what you're looking for in a game.

I didn’t play the first but when i saw the first trailer of the second i was thrilled. Since then at least once a year i look for news hoping for a release date and here i am another time not finding anything.

I loved the first one for the simplicity, beauty, poetry, fun, humor, and endearing characters. When I look at the material shown for the sequel, it doesn't excite me at all.

had a friend who worked on this for a year or two before quitting Ubi. Shame this has been in Dev Hell for so long and might never release. The most recent creative director just passed away. Idk what Ubi is doing.

I won't be surprised if it comes out, and I won't be surprised if it doesn't. One thing to note, looking at the situation from the outside in: this is not at all the same situation as Duke Nukem Forever. Anybody looking for updates on that game's development across those fifteen years could tell less than halfway in that whatever we got was going to be bad. Remember when the 3d Realms people came back with an "update" (I want to say it was around 2008), after years of silence, and all they had to show was a short clip of Duke sitting on a bench in a dark void, lifting a weight while smoking a cigar? Or when the game was formally cancelled, footage of where the progress had been when 3d Realms shut down was uploaded to the internet, and it looked like the alpha version of a game from multiple generations ago with a half-done "modern" polish on it? And then when Gearbox finished it up, that's pretty much exactly what we got? This is probably not that.

I played through the first game twice and have always been looking forward to a sequel. The early test video of the game's capabilities, along with the teaser trailers, looked promising despite not fully understanding why the characters were cussing so much. At this point, I've accepted the fact that it will never be. Or if it does, like Duke Nukem before it, it will be a rushed knock off using the BG&E name for a quick cash grab.

I have lost any hype for this game. If it ever releases I'll be surprised if it even lives up to the first game, let alone builds upon it. Chances are it'll be a disappointing but decent game or an abject failure. This game should have been released in the 360/PS3 era to put things into perspective. I saw the original trailer when the original Modern Warfare 2 was just released in 2009, that's just insane and can't even be called a delay at this point.

the moment they announced the new game to be a prequel I lost all hype, Jade and the DomZ mystery carried the first game to me, it needs a continuation after that post credit scene that was even reflected in the first teaser

Good news and bad news. They are still making the game, but it's called Star Wars Outlaw now. Watching the 2 trailers side by side makes that very clear, if you ask me.

I do wonder if this has really been under development, Ancel's team at Ubi Montreal created the Ubi Art engine and then used it to create Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. The more recent space monkey stuff seems at total odds with the earlier Jade material in that 2009 demo. Then the pile of red flags that BGE2 showcased - going edgy with over the top swearing in contrast with the original that was a very classy game, making it a prequel then the first game ended on a cliffhanger, how they claimed they're going to make a heavy use of procedural generation to create countless planets and so on, all this just deflated any hopes for me.

Even though I don't have much hope, maybe it's better they release it when the game is good and don't just release a garbage game, this IP is too good for that, but since it's ubisoft it will probably be an assasinscreed/fancy style game , with bgae lore

Modern Ubisoft couldn't deliver a good game if their lives depended on it. I can just see the corporate meeting deciding to make BGE2 a live service always online crap to save all the money and time they already wasted on this project.

Game is abandonware. Why? cause studios have a revolving door. The original team who created the last trailer are mostly gone. Any attempt to restart the project would be like trying to reverse-engineer the Pyramids of Giza.

I don’t understand hardly anything about game programming, but if you start a game 10-15 years ago and it takes so long wouldnt it look seriously dated by the time it releases? At some point do you just start over from scratch?

Well not really from scratch. Desigh stays the same and from coding point most methods can be transfered to another engine. Though if the game becomes outdated in a gameplay sense then yep, pretty much do it all over again. I don't think we'll ever see the version they were showing at E3 years ago.
