Just in case you don't know. Wong Ka Kui (the lead singer), Wong Ka Keung (the bass) and the drummer Yip Sai Wing are high school graduated and only Paul Wong (the guitarist) is University graduated. They are from low level families. All four of them did not have chance to attend the musical school. Their professional techniques are gained through self-learning and non-stop practicing. All of them are talented in music, especially Wong Ka Kui is regarded as Genius. Ka Kui start to self learn guitar by accident at his age of 15 , when he picked up an old guitar on the street. Before he died at aged 31, he is said to have composed over 700 songs but most of them did not get published, because only those songs are Pop songs that can be accepted by the Music Company are allowed to be on the market. Paul Wong said less than 10% of Ka Kui's high level music was heard so far. He could only chose to release those music to HK audience (with their limited musical level at the time of '90), that can understand his music and of course with the permission of the Record company. Paul Wong said Ka Kui had died too early and his most high level of music are still stored within his brain. He still have several hundreds of demo song not finished.

@@spiderhandspnz You may take time to explore their songs one by one indeed, as they were all composed using different arrangement with basic instruments not really fancy ones. This is Kakui and team's spirit, to work very hard for home-made music with creativity despite the mass market is following trend of re-lyric japanese songs during 80s 90s. This was the main reason his band is at highest rank as legend not only songs, but the never give up yet kindness and love to ppl, for peaceful world.

Prophecy 2 : 仍然自由自我 永远高唱我歌 走遍千里 He keeps on singing his song and still many people around the world are still listening to it, though he died before 29 years ago.

It seems in the lyrics, there are two prophecies of Ka Kui's life. One is : He is fearing that he will fall one day, (Oh No). In fact he did fall and die dramatically shortly after he finished his last song. Another one :( He said in the song) he will be continuously as free as before in chasing his musical dream. and will go thousand miles further. After 29 years, his musical dream is achieved and his song goes thousand miles by itself. It is heard and touched hundred millions people around the world. So far, I heard several different versions of this song created by different nationalities.

Thank you so much for listening to these 5 songs (again) It seems impossible as of now, as it was disbanded in 2003. My tear is running on my face since the first guitar intro. I LOVE THEM ALL!!! - "Boundless sea and sky" has always been my all-time-favorite. - At some point in time I used to listen to "Lover" more than others, esp when I was upset with life and love.. - "I really love you" was my first "favorite" when I first declared myself as a fan! That was also the first popular "pop-song" I can also recall during that era, that songs have ending with music fading out. I guess it was find of "cultural" - "liking you" was published slightly before "I really love you" but I has been my all time favorite in romance. (I read that the song as written for his first ex-lover, they parted because the song-writer needed to concentrate on music! ) - "Glory Year" is also my favorite... it taught me that music is not just about romance, but also love and peace! ☮ Thanks again for the time with us!

"Really love you" was the first most popular Beyond song. It popular here in Indonesia at '90 from their Encore album (still on tape), this Mandarin version was titled "Ni Ce tau wo te mi wang". many people start to know Beyond from this song. The song is so catchy, the opening guitar solo was so iconic.

Hey, really appreciate your live stream of Hong Kong's most beloved band. Wong Ka Kui (the lead singer that was involved in the tragic accident) is considered by many a musical genius. Many of the songs from Beyond (especially early adoptions up until his death) was composed or lyrics written by him. Like some have mentioned, there are many unpublished songs left out due to Hong Kong's music scene being not adoptive of heavier rock genres. Wong Ka Keung (the lead bassist) is also considered by many a great bass guitarist and is the younger real-life brother of Wong Ka Kui. He also contributed to a few hit songs most notably "cold rainy night 冷雨夜" is Ka Keung's most famous song where he assumes the lead. Yip Sai-Win (the Drummer) has been called during his heydays, the drum king of Hong Kong. He is also noted for being the composer of several of Beyond's songs during their heydays (and more during the 3 man era). Paul Wong (The lead guitarist) has also been named one of best guitarist in Asia during his prime. Mostly known as the electric guitarist, almost all guitar solos are performed by Paul. Paul also took over most of the lead singer role after Ka Kui's death as they went into the new era (the 3 man Beyond Era from 1995-2003 circa). The most beloved Beyond Era is obviously the Ka Kui era up until 1995 where they have countless classics and legendary songs that everybody knows in Asia. However, the 3 man era was actually very good as well although the genre and composition somewhat changed without the heart and soul of Ka Kui. Most diehard fans still enjoyed their music very much. During this era, most songs were composed by or sung by Paul with a heavier influence in rock to signify the end of the original era. If you have the chance to be a diehard Beyond fan, take a listen to more of their songs and appreciate them! Cheers!

@Spiderhands Productions Hi Logan, I loved your review and your love for " 海闊天空 - Boundless sea and sky" and I just wanted to give you some different naunces and some tiny details about the song which might give you a different retrospective understanding of the unfortunate circumstances within the said song. Firstly, contrary to what other people have been saying, the song was also written for the general public and not just for him and the band members. However, the song was indeed written to express their frustration and distaste upon the social expectations/norms that they where enforced throughout their 10 year run as a band as explained below: 1. At that time, Beyond was restricted by Hong Kong's record companies and could not really create freely, and needed to sing music that catered to the Hong Kong market 2. The Band's original goal was to really develop the Hong Kong Music industry but record companies forced them to participate in thousands of variety shows/comedy shows for representation work in order to raise their popularity. (and none of the shows had anything to do with music) 3. Most of the Beyond Band members hated variety entertainment shows but still were forced to participate. 4. Dissapointed, the Band decided to leave to Japan in order to develop their music and get away from variety entertainment 5. However, they suffered setbacks and due to the unfamiliar enviroment they were in, they couldn't do much and were coerced to attend japan's variety shows hoping that it would lead them/give them a leadway with a slight chance of accessing the Japanese music industry. 6. Unfortunately and coincidentally, while they were in japan, Ka Kui slipped landing head first in a variety game show and was immediately in a coma and died a few days after. - It seems really crazy unfortunate that "Boundless Ocean Vast sky" was the last and most famous song that the band produced and that he died only 2 months after writing the song.

@Spiderhands Productions The Song lyrics (has quite a few nuances to it) : (Words encased with "speech marks" are directed from the English version of the translation, but I wanted to explain more because it loses a lot of the different meanings from Chinese to English translation) Ultimately, the song describes his displeasure in life at that time and how he wanted to break free from social norms and that he tells that you should also do the same thing (at that time it was the frustration of the all the things above from variety shows to record companies). He expresses that him venturing off from social norms may lead to failure and that he also fears from failing and "falling down" but he doesn't mind it as long as there is "only you and me" The "only you and me" part is also an encouraged suggestion for the general individual public and anyone else in their close relations such as friends family to indulge in "freedom" and stop being so robotic creatures that follows society. (As referenced from "Everybody can do it") (and at that time, Ka Kui's "you and me" was referring to him and his band members, but the lyrics also proposes another narrative where in actual fact he is also referring to "you" - meaning you as a listener to accompany him) Lastly, the part where he says "Always loudly singing my song, Traveling thousands of miles" doesn't mean him travelling physically but rather the actual song being travelled and hoping that he could get this song's message across worldwide. Lead singer Ka Kui wrote most of the lyrics but his brother (the bassist) told him to change one of the original lyrics from "oh yeah" to "oh no". - The reasoning behind it was because the lyrics mention about falling down (mentally and/or physically) so logically a person wouldn't say "oh yeah" when falling. -There is also a Japanese version of the song (called "遥かなる夢に") where Ka Kui sings in Japanese but the lyrics are obviously different in order to fit rythmic lyrical pattern and tones but the general message is the same as the one in Chinese however it slightly focuses more on encouragement and hope, he discusses that people should stop prevailing and should "live another story again". Love from Hong Kong!

Late to know this review, these top 5 songs are very good, but they still have a lot of good songs like AMANI, 灰色軌跡, etc. Wait for the second round of Beyond’s songs review. P.S: the "海闊天空" was over 100 million hits on youtube last month. FYI This is the first Cantonese song that hit this number of views.

In those years early 90s, love songs were so popular in Hong Kong that some people or companies wanted Beyond to create love songs more. ‘Be keen on you’ was one of the few love songs that they produced. Beyond’s songs were more about their views upon the world, peace, dreams and hopes. For example, ‘The Glorious Years’ paid tribute to Nelson Mandela and ‘Amani’ was about peace after Beyond’s trip to Kenya. Their spirit was one of the appreciated things for Beyond fans!

I finally found you on KZbin, I love your production of Chinese songs, it somehow helps me understand more about the songs I like. If you remember, I even registered an account just to message you on the other website about you don't want your reaction to be used in a review by @Bushikesangde. I am Cantonese living in NZ so I think we have some overlap here, lol. For the last song, there is a background context. In the 90s Hong Kong, the entertainment industry was dominated by few people, and they control most of the things, such as prize giving. Beyond always got second/sliver place a few times (unreasonably IMO). Wong Ka Kui was too sad and then tried to start his career again in Japan. Then he died in an accident in Japan. He was sad about no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't make any breakthrough, and people (with power) tried to contain him/them (maybe because Beyond didn't want to join those people? I am guessing here). That's why in his song, he said to keep trying, and never give up, and people even laugh at him/them because it is well known that Beyond was not in favour of those people with power.

according to the lyricist, Lau, this song suggested the hopeless feeling, the guilt and the pressure one has encountered as a hong konger while having a lover who resides in mainland china during the 90s when hk was still governed by british. the "someone" or the "wall" which Lau referred to is actually the government's immigration policy in the 90's, which had kept them away from seeing each other.
