Grace, your review underscores my opinion, that it was the producer who caused “Gladiator” to be a great film. Everyone always forgets “Gladiator” was produced Amblin/Dreamworks (aka: Steven Spielberg). Meaning, the producers reigned in all of Ridley Scott’s worst impulses and streamlined the story. Something about the trailer for “Gladiator II” showcased Scott went for bombastic over substance, and the film lacked a compelling lead in Paul Mescal. Even without seeing this yet, I seriously cannot believe there are talks about filming a third installment. Which only proves that Hollywood continually fails to read the room.

When historians point out things about "historical movies", the majority brush it off as insignificant. But making an (as accurate as it can be) historical movie is comparable to staying accurate with the source material on a current fantasy show. There was cohesion at the start with both circumstances. They sell us this dream of venturing into Ancient Rome but in reality it's rich out of touch people making ego boosts for "broad societies."
@Persephone_Personified4 күн бұрын
Rich out of touch people in actual Rome, and people that created this film. 110% correct. It makes me so sad that awesome smaller movies from unknown directors get brushed aside for more CGI filled messes... they’ll never learn... they should see it coming... but I guess Rome acted like they didn’t see it coming either. 🤷🏼♀️
@alexor0814 күн бұрын
@@Persephone_Personified And yet, a rich American filmmaker has nothing in common with a Roman elite. Total lack of class. These kinds of movies are stereotypical, as if Rome is just gladiators and muscles. For the purposes of "entertainment", we accept that and try to enjoy the spectacle. But when you learn that it hasn't any memorable depiction of the spectacle of Rome and it tries to be complex with a bunch of characters and history into one film, no wonder it fails. Unfortunately the protagonist might be a clear copy of Maximus, and the fact that he's his son is what initially gave it away.

@@Persephone_PersonifiedAlso, Rome saw it coming and accepted change. The empire split into western and eastern parts. When the west was falling with Rome, Constantinople in the east was rising. For the last years of the west they even changed cities and Ravenna was the capital city when Rome fell. In due course the western civilization of Rome feel but the eastern part of the empire continued for another thousand years. Very interesting history, worthy of a read. 👌

Yeah like Grace said, in the first movie we're told that "There was once a dream that was Rome", and we get to see that through following Maximus, who embody that vision - A loving father, a loyal husband, a just leader. Which is yeah, romantic - but so was the dream the Emperor was talking about. It's idealism - it's classic storytelling of good prevailing over evil. @@CarlotaEmperatriz Whats your source for there being no Black emperors? Dont you think that if Romans were white they would of shared their ability to write with Slavic and N.Europeans? Why then do we not find a written language from the region until Runic c. 150 CE?

@@samkostos4520 Northern Africans are not Black. Not even today, not back then.

If you want another "Gladiator" movie, no. But go and see the grandiosity and the impressive performances of the cast.

The 1st movie had some involvement from Spielberg. Franzoni was always looking to spielberg for advice while writing Glad 1 . Ridley jus likes to take credit that he was the brains behind Bladerunner,alien and gladiator.

Why does this not shock anyone. She loves the awful movies and hates the good ones.

I love that Grace reviews not just the movie but her overall movie going experience including her seat and the popcorn

Denzel was from New Jersey in an ancient time... ...never knew that’s where the accent originated from. lmao

The original is close to perfect. There was never any reason to make a sequel and the trailers did nothing to entice me to watch. I also don’t get Paul Mescal’s appeal. Hard pass on this one.

Because he is a great actor and accumulated many fans as a result. Testament to him.

I had a feeling… I laughed at the first trailer, it was so over the top. I love Mescal. But Washington seemed to be playing a caricature of prior roles. Pre-bought tickets weeks ago so we shall see…

Can't say I'm surprised. Ridley Scott hasn't been able to direct a movie since the 1990s.

Yeah, I don’t always agree with Grace but I have also seen Ridley Scott’s recent films. Aside from The Last Duel, I was incredibly underwhelmed so I fear she might be right about this one.

Thank you Grace for always being so positive grace. Even when you don’t like something you do it gracefully. No pun intended. I have been battling depression for a few years now and your videos always make my bad days a little brighter

Another fail for Mr Scott and nothing special on this sequel. Retaking the same story of the original one. Pointless sequel.

Y’all she did NOT spoil anything 🤦♂️ a spoiler is a narrative point that impacts the plot or ending. Everything Grace is discussing has no real impact or was already revealed in the trailers.

Telling who died in a movie the no1 cardinal sin of spoilers.

She’s very respectful when it comes to cameos in Marvel movies but here she’s totally fine mentioning a returning character’s death that happens in the last 20 minutes 🤷♂️
