In 1978 Director Robert O'Connor and his film crew followed the BFGoodrich Performance Racing Team on their journey to the world famous Mint 400. The BFG team, which included the Bill Stroppe built #235 Chevy Blazer of Frank "Scoop" Vessels and the sister Blazer of #247 "Baja" Bob Gordon and co-driver Gary Pace, entered alongside an incredible 437 competitors. This is their story...

"Take your time and go smooth" - Very well said, that is how modern WRC drivers often plan difficult stages. If you go slower you might be the only car in the field not to have to get out and fix a puncture.

Looking at how these old-school off-roaders run, you can notice how much the cars evolved in terms of suspension geometry to this day, to say the least.

70s off road suspension look as stiff as a roadracer against what is used today.

Given how little suspension travel they had back then, I just don't understand how these guys spent this much time in one of these vehicles and survived. I know the Baja's are exceptionally tough, as is Dakar in its own way, but these people were agreed apart in my mind. They had everything to go fast back then except for the suspension so the driver became half of the suspension. Brutal...
