So nice to see this tank live on! Was one a true pleasure developing this alongside Jon Kroge. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into this but the result was something to be proud of. The improvements that have been made are brilliant in my mind. The cap was always a thorn in our side. It worked better if you did not over tighten as the pressure from the tank would build and pull the cap in tighter and tighter. I still have a collection of caps and modifications made over the years. To answer a few questions here, the tank was born out of frustration with other tanks failing over the years - fiberglass soaking up fuel, poor fitting stainless, and multiple aluminum tanks cracking and splitting in unusual locations. The fitment I feel we got as right as one could when designing something for different models and manufacturers. For the most part, Italian frames were the most consistent. Spanish not so much. Indian… please. The amount of movement in where things can be welded on a frame are, shall we say, surprising. It’s as if on training day, because I can only assume ONE day of training was given if at all, a supervisor would instruct the welder to have fun with it, be creative, there’s always another coming down the line! Regarding the shape and the question about popping out the side, we went with a design that was the most universal at the time. Carb cut outs on the left or right were almost universally split right down the middle as far as what people had. The toolbox was sacrificed for capacity and we felt there were alternative means of storage available that were just as useful as the original. The plastic is incredibly thick and rigid in order to be road legal. It’s all about avoiding fuel spillage on the road should there be an accident. If you’ve ever seen a cheap jerry can swell up or an early plastic tank on a dirtbike cavitate you can see why. Anyway, hope that sheds a little more light on things. Cheers to Jon Kroge for sticking with it and to SCK for taking it further.

I've been thinking of getting one of those tanks. So your videos couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks Rob, keep up with the great work.

the fuel tap solution looks really good, hope they bring out a standard tank with that feature

It also moves the fuel tap up a bit to clear silent blocks.

Good information on the video, what a contentious issue!! Petrol tanks, Vietnam tanks are crap don’t waste your money, there are a few midrange tanks that are 12 ltr and fit in the standard way straps etc and then Oiltek excellent quality and fitting, only issue I’ve found that when the tank runs low (mine is 14ltr) the fuel goes to the back of the tank causing fuel starvation at about 2-3 litres left, found this out on the A1/M engine temperature went up and then it cut out, with 10 miles to go before fuel. Dipped the tank had just over two litres and just made it (small baffles?) screw caps i think would be a problem especially if you lose it while out coming lose or you forget it, I must admit that I’m not keen on the plastic tank.

99% of all modern motorcycles now use plastic tanks because they are safer (proberbly also cheaper)

@@kickbackgarage I best thing about the Oiltek is, it has a made in England sticker lol

Oiltek are apparently going to start making their mid range tank again.

Maybe it would be possible to undent the unused cut-out for the carb, to gain another liter or two in capacity by heating the dent with a hot air gun and blow it upp by putting some air-pressure inside?
@kickbackgarage6 ай бұрын
Proberbly not. because they are moulded. If these turn out ok, maybe BGM could make them with a left or right cut out. Making molds however is not cheap.

I had one of the SC earlier version which had the leaking pet cock problem, the brass threaded insert was actually loose in the plastic tank. The other problem was that for fitment to my Jet200, I had to shorted the rubber mounts and bolts as they were about 50% too long
@kickbackgarage6 ай бұрын
Instructions say the rubbers and bolts may need cutting on certain models. I'll see when I fit it.

I have a jet200, the cap is a pain in the arse especially with a snetterton and the tank material does not tolerate fuel spills. Can you purchase the new style caps?
