Directed by the genius film director, Puttanna Kanagal, the film Upaasane was a HUGE hit because of this song and "Sampige marada hasirele naDuve' sung by B.K. Sumitra, in my opinion of course. Shri Vijaya Bhaskar scored outstanding music for this musical film. Composed in raga Saramathi, this song speaks about the temple and its deity Kanya Kumari, at the tip of Indian ocean. The lyricist Shri Vijaya Narasimha praises the Goddess with beautiful musical phrases (swaraksharas in several places like SaaMa Ga na, Pala gadala etc). Those that understand Kannada/Sanskrit will also appreciate the expressiveness of "Nava bhava Nava Jeeva nee thumbi baare, Nava Rasa Vaahini nee daye thore"... The song is soulfully sung by the legendary singer Smt. S.Janaki and gives the listener a lasting divine experience. Paying respectful tribute to all the great artists that gave us this gem of a song, Film: Upasane (1974) Lyrics: Vijaya Narasimha Music: Vijaya Bhaskar Original Singer: S.Janaki Cover By: Jayanthi Nadig

with out being understood the song /bhajan sounded very nice . your replies indicate that your ENGLISH is certainly good ,.in view of this fact I,d like to request you to ,also ,give along sTRANSLATION so that people of other languages and followers of other religions like me ,can appreciate as to what is being ENTREATED to GOD. Dr Vaquar......thanks in advance .

Thanks for your interest in the meaning behind this song. Set to Carnatic classical raag Saramathi and composed in Kannada (the language of people from Karnataka, in South India), this semi-classical song addresses the temple deity Kanya Kumari, at the tip of the Indian ocean. The lyricist Shri Vijaya Narasimha praises the goddess with beautiful musical phrases (swaraksharas such as Saa Ma Ga na, Pala Gadala etc) leading to rich poetical, musical and lyrical overtones, like "Nava bhava Nava Jeeva nee thumbi baare, Nava Rasa Vaahini nee daye thore", asking the goddess to manifest in new manifold ways... It's also laced with with references to Lord Shiva's Damaru, Brahma's Omkar naada etc as the source of sound, speech, language and music. The song is soulfully sung by the legendary singer Smt. S.Janaki and gives the listener a lasting divine experience. A literal translation of the lyrics to English may not be able to provide the intended import of this splendid song.

Thanks for the reply .,but my curiosity for the meanings contained in the Bhajan led me to the original song .what i gather from the SCENE is :turbulent sea ,unsteady boat ,restless devoutees with anxious look on the faces .......naturally the singer is ENTREATING THE GODESS TO ensure the safe arrival of the boat to the intended destination which eventually happens by the grace of SAVIOUR..........If i am almost right please Ok it.thank u Dr Vaquar.

This song is sung in surrender to the deity Kanya Kumari , and the singer goes missing (to Kanya Kumari - that's the name of the place, at the southern tip of India and the Indian ocean. We visited that place couple of years ago) . Her relatives are looking for her in the turbulent waters, afraid that she might end/dedicate her life to Kanya Kumari.... It was a very popular song from the movie and is actually featured twice. Here is the happier, serene version , where she is playing the veena and singing in front of her guru.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2isk51qm6lnq7M. Thanks for your indulgence :)

Jayanthi Nadig well, my inference is wrong .,I,m very grateful to you for apprising me that the people in the boat were actually searching for her /singer in theturbulent sea....but even now i dont know the meanings of the words in the song....once again I thank you for patiently replying to me Dr Vaquar.......I too had visited kanyakumari long long ago when we had stayed in trivendrum, kerala for 10 days.

Good to know you visited Kanyakumari :) The boat ride to the Vivekananda rock memorial was quite turbulent, when we visited as well...
