अण्णांनी ( स्वरभास्कर पंडित भीमसेन जोशी ) गायलेला, जयपूर अत्रौली घराण्याचा अत्यंत अनवट असा हा अनवट राग ऐकून, ह्याच डागोरी रागाबद्दल पं. दिनकर पणशीकर ह्यांनी एका मैफिलीत सांगितलेली अत्यंत मनोरंजक कथा आठवली. जयपूर अत्रौली घराण्याचे अर्ध्वयू उस्ताद अल्लादियाखानसाहेब हे त्यावेळी कोल्हापूरच्या शाहूमहाराजांचे राजगायक होते. तसेच प्रख्यात गायक संगीतसूर्य केशवराव भोसले ह्यांचादेखील शाहूमहाराजांशी घनिष्ट संबंध. केशवरावांनी महाराजांकडे हट्ट धरला की खासाहेबांकडे मला गाणे शिकायचे आहे. त्यावर शाहूमहाराज म्हणाले, "हे फारच अवघड काम आहे. त्यांचे नियमनिर्बंध तुला माहितीच आहेत. तसेच ते माझ्या दरबारी असले तरी त्यांना असली काही मागणी केल्यास ते राजगायकपद सोडून पण देऊ शकतात. पण एक पर्याय आहे. आमच्या गारगोटी येथील वाड्यात राणीसाहेबांना खांसाहेब गाणे शिकवतात. त्यावेळी तू शेजारच्या खोलीत बसून रहा आणि गुपचूप गाणे ऐकून जे काही शिकता येईल ते शिक." योजना विचित्र आणि अवघड असली तरी केशवरावांनी खासाहेबांचे गाणे मिळणार म्हणल्यावर त्याला तयारी दर्शविली. आणि मग ह्याप्रमाणे केशवरावांची छुपी तालीम चालू झाली. खांसाहेब त्यावेळी राणीसाहेबांना ह्याच रागाची तालीम देत होते, पण त्यावेळी रागाचे नाव सांगण्याची प्रथा नव्हती. त्यानंतर काही महिन्यांनी कोल्हापूरला दरबारात केशवराव भोसलेचे गाणे ठरले. नेहेमी नाट्यसंगीत गाणारे केशवराव शास्त्रीय संगीताची मैफिल करणार असे कळल्यावर, गाणे ऐकल्यावर अलोट गर्दी लोटली होती. आणि केशवरावांच्या समोरच साक्षात उस्ताद अल्लादियाखानसाहेब बसले होते. केशवरावांनी मैफिलीला सुरुवात केली ती नेमकी ह्याच रागाने. त्यांनी अस्ताई चालू करताच खासाहेबांनी "ठेहरो" असा इशारा दिला आणि " यह राग तुम्हे किसने सिखाया?" असा सवाल केला. अर्थातच, सत्य काय ते सांगणे केशवरावांना शक्य नव्हते पण त्यांनी खासाहेबांना सांगितले की " आपणच हा राग दोन वेळा सांगलीच्या सांभारे वैद्यांकडील झालेल्या मैफिलींमध्ये गायला आहात. तोच ऐकून मी गायचा प्रयत्न करतो आहे. सिध्दारूढस्वामींच्या कृपेने मी हे धाडस करतो आहे." त्यावर खासाहेबांनी केशवरावांना गायची अनुज्ञा दिली. पण केशवराव त्यांना म्हणाले, "आपण आधी रागाचे नाव सांगा." खांसाहेब नाव सांगेनात. फार मोठा बाका प्रसंग उद्भवला. शेवटी काही दरबारी मंडळींनी खासाहेबांना समजावले, "आता आपण जर रागाचे नाव सांगितले नाही तर दुसऱ्याच काही नावाने हा राग प्रसिद्ध होईल." तेव्हा खासाहेबांनी ह्या रागाचे नाव डागोरी आहे असे सांगितले. ज्या डागोर बाणीची ( शैलीची ) त्यांनी तालीम घेतली त्यावरून हे नाव त्यांनी दिले होते. अशा तऱ्हेने, 'कट्यार काळजात घुसली' नाटकाचे कथाबीज ह्या प्रसंगात आहे असे पंडित दिनकरराव पणशीकर ह्यांनी सांगितले आहे. --

It may be that Khansaheb did not officially name the raga in the court episode, but merely disclosed it after much persuasion and with utmost reluctance. Nobody in Kolhapur knew about the raga anyway.

Pt. Govindrao Tembe a welknown music critic, music director and great harmonium player writes in his book published around 1950 that, he had asked Alladiya Khanssaheb about the name of this raag. Khansaheb told him that he has not given any name to this raag. The future generations will name it. In an interview with my sister Shruti In year 2005 Alladiya Khansaheb's grandson Ustad Ajijuddin Khansheb alias Baba Khansaheb informed that, on my father Pt. Wamanrao Sadolikar's urging him to name the this raag, sometime after 1955. He named the Raag as 'Dagori'. Since Khansaheb's family belong to dagorbani. पणशीकरांची माहिती अचूक नाही. यात उल्लेखिलेल्या राणीसाहेब या. शाहू महाराजांच्या राणी नसून त्यांचे बंधू बापूसाहेब कागलकरांच्या द्वितीय पत्नी तानीबाई घोरपडे कागलकर या होत. त्यांना शिकवायला शाहू महाराजांनी अल्लादिया खांसाहेबाना कोल्हापुरात आणले होते. त्यांची तालीम ही गारगोटी येथे नव्हे तर कोल्हापुरात नागाळा पार्क येथील कागलकर बंगल्यात चाले ( जिथे आता कोल्हापूर जिल्हा परिषदेचे ऑफिस आहे) किंवा पन्हाळा येथील संध्या बागे जवळील वाड्यात चाले. नागाळा पार्कातील बंगल्यात केशवराव भोसलेंना शेजारच्या खोलीत बसून ऐकण्याची परवानगी होती. हे माझे आजोबा विनायकराव घोरपड्यांनी आम्हाला सांगितले. ते त्यावेळी त्या बंगल्यात (नागाळा पार्क) राहात होते. तसेच त्यांची तालीम ऐकायला गोविंदराव टेंबे इ. संगीत रसिक त्या बंगल्याभोवती घिरट्या मारीत. या संदर्भातील आणखी आठवणी रामकृष्ण बाक्रे यांनी अल्लादिया खांसाहेबांवर लिहीलेल्या लेखात आहेत. जो १९७८ साली महाराष्ट्र टाइम्सच्या दिवाळी अंकात प्रसिद्ध झाला होता. तसेच त्यांच्या बुजुर्ग या पुस्तकात उपलब्ध आहे.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has beautifully sung this Raga but its also important to reveal that his full Gayaki sounds as per the AGRA Gharana style. Sometimes it resembles the Gayaki of Ustad Fayyaz Khansahab Prempiya and Ustad Azmat Hussain Khansahab Dilrang.

Sadashiv Ji also uploaded Raag Basant Bahar with this Dagori. That recording was already uploaded by Warren Senders. In his description I read that the date is 15th April 1985. So what do you say, was it from different concert than this?

Thank you Devanshji for sharing it. I have only heard this Raga from Jaipur Gharana singers. There is a recording by Pandit Vamanrao Sadolikar that was shared by Sangeetveda1. I believe that ther are some recordings by Pandit Mansoor also. Thanks owed to Farhanbhai for identifying this recording.

Wonderful share - thank you! Had never heard of this Raga before. Reminds me of a couple of other ragas but will need to listen a few more times to get a better sense. Do you know approximately when this was recorded? His voice sounds like from early 60s maybe?

According to Chinmoy ji, Mansur taught BSJ Malavi and Shukla Bilawal. Idk if Dagori was also taught.
