Bhimsen Joshi sings Shriniketana - Carnatic Style!

As an upcoming young vocalist in Hubli-Dharwad, Bhimsen Joshi set many devotional compositions of Kannada Haridasas to Hindustani ragas, thereby creating an entirely new genre of Dasavani. Among his many creations Shriniketana Palayamam by Jagannathadasa stands out as a masterpiece. While Hindustani listeners identify this with raga Durga, the tune is actually based on the Karnataki raga Arabhi. During his live performances he often highlighted its lineage by indulging in elaborate Carnatic style alaaps. This clip is from early 1980s, with the maestro in peak form.

This dasarapada is composed by Pt. Madhav Gudi (Panditji's senior desciple). Pt. Bhimsen Joshi liked it a lot and presented it in his concerts too!

Not sure if that is true, never heard this song from MG. The EP of this song by Bhimsen Joshi came out in 1970 or so but was popular well before that. The heavy Carnatic accent and demonstrative alaaps don't sound like Madhav Gudi's expertise.

@@havanurmic one must not forget that Madhav Gudi's grandfather Pt.Sheshacharya Gudi was a great carnatic singer of that time. So madhav gudi's knowledge cannot be ruled out. also it said that Bhimsenji's during his visit to dwd in early 60's , he had listened to this song in carnatic style from Gudi sheshacharya's brother. Also Madhavji had sung this in front of Bhimsenji ( as mentioned to me by his sister and brother)

@@sumukh.hungund I was only skeptical of the claim that tune was composed by Madhav Gudi himself. That one of his elders like grandfather Sheshacharya or his brother composed it long ago is quite possible. BJ himself was musically quite sharp and could absorb the essence and nuances of any good musical piece. Since you are familiar with Bhimsen Joshi's early years in Dharwad could you throw some light on another discussion? There is a rare rendition of raga Dagori here kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpmVfYFnd7prhtE This is a Jaipur Atrauli khaas raga and in the comments there is a discussion of just who "taught" this raga to Bhimsen Joshi. Someone has mentioned Mallikarjun Mansur as the teacher and claimed Mansur also introduced him to other Atrauli specialties like Malavi and Shukla Bilawal. Do you know if the two exchanged any musical ideas?

@@havanurmic they were contemproarary artists eventhough Mansurji was senior by age. Bhimsenji had inclination to listen to good music from all gharana's and grab new things( which he himself has told many times in interviews). There might be a peer learning but definitely not a teacher student relationship.

Dear all Bheemanna Lovers.. This is close to Arabhi raag of carnatic raag written by Grest Sri Sri Jagannatha Dasaru This was being aired in Akashavani well before 1970s. Some people are misleading this us written by Madhav Gudi no not at all.
