Offering redundancies to KiwiRail workers is probably the first step in the Nats plan to privatise it. Under-staff it, under-fund it, claim it's failing and needs private investment, and then sell it to investor who'll expect tax payers to keep funding it, like they did in the U.K.

Chewie is right. Brad Olsen is a terrible economist, not least because he said govt stimulus caused inflation. That has been proven to be false. The inflation came from global supply chain disruption, oil prices and profiteering. And of course a persistent (as in pre-pandemic) ongoing problem of property price, rent and rates inflation (non-tradeable). Sadly, Craig Renny isn't all that much better. ANY unemployment is govt choice, not just the 0.5% extra that he suggests is the result of current govt policy. A govt can choose to run an economy with an unemployed "buffer stock" of workers or an employed buffer stock of workers. It's very sad to see politicians and economist who say they are on the side of the ordinary folk continue to buy in to the need for an unemployed buffer stock of workers when there is a much more humane and ethical way of supporting workers who are surplus to private sector requirements.

@@danieleyre8913 that's what I find the most amusing of all. This is the EXACT same stuff Key did, just on turbo. Go after beneficiaries, check. Run down public services, check. Create homelessness to increase property investment prices via demand, check. Create high unemployment ready for exploitation via demand, check. Reduce workers rights, check. Pay lip service to essential services, check. It's the exact same stuff, but faster and while we're in a more vulnerable position so we can't absorb the shock anymore. If I was dictator for a day, one of the things I'd do is make a mandatory civics class for at least 2 years. We've shown we desperately need it.

Oh get your fats right! The recession was well forecast prior to the elections. Remember the RBNZ Gov Adrian Orr said he will need to manufacture a recession by increasing the OCR to curb inflation. This has resulted in a sharp increase in unemployment which is exactly what needed to happen to break the back of inflation.

The goverment didnt increase interest rates, the RBNZ did. They did however change the RBNZ mandate.

The Labour Party changed the mandate so the Reserve Bank also had to consider the effect on unemployment when setting the OCR. National immediately changed it back. The Reserve Bank however is on record saying that the changes to the mandate did not actually affect any of the decisions they made over that time.
@haystack31493 күн бұрын
It's an ideological decision to have this 4.5% - 5% unemployment. That means a bunch of people are out of work, so there's a waiting pool of cheap labour. There is a huge pool of people that don't work and don't get a benefit, some of whom would work for the right opportunity and money, that's where your spare labour force should be coming from, we should be aiming for full employment IMO.
@allisonlake41033 күн бұрын
Close to full employment was achieved under the last government. Basically the CoCs government has destroyed small towns and cities like Raetihi, Ohakune and Timaru. Next year, the government will flood NZ with immigrants who'll push house prices up again. right wingers are heartless and only love money, eg ab mocking a fellow working man at his work. This type of person is who is running this country. Bring on 2026.
