The first Bi guy I've ever seen on KZbin actually put themselves out there and discuss Destiel--or just a guy in general. Sometimes it feels like this fandom is overwhelmed with women( and there's nothing wrong with that honestly), but I enjoyed this video simply because I'm Bisexual myself and it's nice to sort of feel like I'm not crazy or weird for being a guy that ships this particular relationship. Was about to say this. I'm watching spn again. And definitely glad I found this channel. But there was a long time I would've never even admitted liking the show, because it would seem gay or cringe, I thought. (And, uh, I am also bisexual...) As a guy it's sometimes so much easier to not reveal you are in any fandom, especially a fandom with many queer people and women openly liking it. It has this weird kind of stigma that's not talked about.

YES This is more or less how I feel about it. If they had just stuck the landing after 15x18 it would have been fine. Cas sacrificing himself for Dean is so very in character, they've all died a million times for each other at this point, what's one more for the road? lol (sadness) But everything after that is just so frustrating. The bar is set so low that even if they had just had Cas show up physically at the end in Heaven, vaguely, with no 100% confirmation of Destiel, I guarantee people would be 40% less mad.

The online reaction to destiel becoming ""canon"" was wild. I saw so many people who had never seen it become supernatural accounts over night, people were binging the entire series in less than the total runtime, someone made a supercut of every scene with Dean and Cas including relevant solo scenes. Very excited to get into this video essay(?) series.

I also started watching the show having heard of the ship expecting it to be just another ship, just fandom shipping characters but nope it really is there, written in the subtext kinda text. Writters put it there, and people who refuse to see it, and call the ones who see it crazy are on the wrong, it's fine if you don't see their relationship the way we do since we all engage with media our own way and have different perspectives on things but also respect our view because it's there and it's totally valid, the reading is there, it's not just shipping, (also absolutely nothing wrong with shipping when you do it respectfully but yea ship and let ship..). And when in later seasons they started working more and more in the relationship beautifully constructing the character development interwining both things I was so happy and satisfied because it really is beautifully done and written, I wish things hadn't ended the way they did because it damaged the story. And me watching and loving the characters for who they are no matter the ships I was hoping for them to have a satisfying ending. Apart from the issues with queerbating and all the hurt by it. Which is another issue. Nice video it was nice listening to your opinion on it, and looking forward to next ones :)

I wholeheartedly agree with this video. All it would've needed was that scene you pointed out, where Dean had the perfect opportunity to tell Sam he loved Cas too. Though, if that had happened, I'd have probably died, but anyway. I see a lot of people saying they should've confessed their love much earlier, but it just wouldn't've been in their nature, so I think up until 15x19 it was all perfect, and to me it was clear from very early on, that they're in love

Well, I have been in SPN fandom for a long time, am also a bisexual nerd obsessed with Destiel who is adamant that Dean is bisexual as well, also unable to drag myself away from the Hell that is Supernatural post the travesty of that finale. Oh man I agree with pretty much everything you said! I only started watching SPN after it ended (binged 15 seasons in three months, and that's with a full-time job; my God, it's addictive) and I was familiar with the premise, Castiel and Destiel from the internet. Even knowing how it ended, I also figured Destiel would just be another ship like Johnlock or Merthur (which I never shipped, but enjoyed their friendship), and I DID feel that way for seasons four and five... and then season six hit and I went HMMMM. Then season gr8 rolled around and by that time I was fully convinced these idiots were in love with each other. Your idea for 15x19 would have been perfect. 😢 Even having Cas show up in Heaven at the end of 15x20, say "hello Dean" and have the two of them hug (just that, nothing more), and I think there would've been a lot less ill-will toward how the show ended. The bar was THAT low. I don't know if it was the writers' fault, or the producer, or the network, or some combination, but I'm sure there was a lot of BTS pressure to end the story in a certain heteronormative way. Misha said that he and Bobo Berens weren't sure they'd even be allowed to make Cas canonically queer and in love with Dean, and were surprised that TPTB let them. Oh well. As I said on another video of yours, I love Despair and am grateful for it, I'm just disappointed with the last two episodes.

Starting with this dissection series, and I'm so on board with seeing this through the perspective of a bi man. This part got me thinking about other series that ostensibly have a main couple but that never "consummates" the relationship, while still making it clear there are feelings, and how differently Destiel and SPN would have played if there was indeed a romantic attraction, but that couldn't be explicitly acknowledged to affect that status quo -the whole Moonlighting issue when it comes to case of the weeks series- So the prime example would be Mulder and Scully, but I think a better example would be from a sci fi show, Stargate SG-1, who managed to solidly imply the Sam and Jack relationship for 10 seasons without confirming it -on the main timeline- letting both have their own cul de sac romances here and there that didn't really affect the whole case of the week set up, letting the show still be about the plot without turning into that relationship drama. And I think that SPN could have pulled off that vibe so well if it had committed to it, and TBH it wouldn't have looked much different -save for the finale- beyond adding a bit more of, IDK, contentment to Dean's personality after a certain point.

Thanks for this video! I'm really not big into shipping or fandom generally (I'm too lazy for that kind of dedication) but Destiel truly is the one exception for me. I also started seeing it around season 7 when I read a really thorough meta a fan wrote. After that I was like, damn they're right! And it just got so obvious over time (especially s12 onwards) that I'm baffled people don't see it. Those heteronormativity goggles are strong 😭. Also agreed, I wouldn't change anything but the very last two episodes of their epic love story. The slow burn is what makes it so unparalleled in modern media.

I cannot believe that I found your channel and videos only now... I agree with you on so many things. (I've just watched your videos on Bi Dean and John and now started this, and I feel so understood.) I started watching SPN after season 8 wrapped up and only started "shipping" Destiel somewhere in season 8. I put shipping between quotation marks because I know there are different interprataion of the word, and I don't really know how to catecorize it myself. Usually, my ships are very far fetched, fun to explore in fics/writing, but no-way in hell would I presume or want them to actually happen. It was different with Destiel. Similarly, I never saw Merthur or Johnlock as anything more than wishful thinking and reading too much into the story. Those could be called cases of queerbating. Destiel was simply different, the only queer ship I've seen on TV that wasn't canon and that I saw the posibility of actually being ackowledged. Even then, I knew that if it would happen, it would happen at the end of the show, as not to alienate the conservative fanbase and lose views. Your videos are very well made - reasonable, serious when need be and sprinkled with a subtle sense of humour. Your thoughts on the subjects you discuss are coherent and laid out very clearly for us to follow and understand; the lenght of the videos makes it so it doesn't feel to drag out. I love hearning your point of view, especially in Bi Dean videos - you stuck to the most blatant and explicit subtext that was veering into text, and didn't feel the need to cover the more nebulous aspects like the body language or lighting, etc. And your laid-back atituted, as in: this is my opinion, others have the right to see things differently, is also very refreshing. So, kudos to you, my fellow bisexual friend. If you ever feel like updating something, I'll definately watch it. But in the meantime I'll have to catch up on the rest of your videos.

So many people say s6 was the season where destiel went beyond "the two guys fandom ships" but I watched s6 on & off when it was airing live (& I barely paid attention during my first rewatch) so for me it was s7 where I really felt destiel was different from all those other popular ships. S7 was the first season where I watched every episode as it aired without missing any of them.

I actually stopped watching SPN a few seasons prior because of the homophobia and sexism so prevalent around the series. Only minor characters allowed to be queer. The way they did Charlie. As a bi woman, there’s only so much I can take. Cas was always my favorite once he joined and I saw Destiel potential pretty early on (idk what episode but whenever Dean was thinking of saying yes to Michael and Cas like throws him around and says “I gave everything for you”… yeah I could see it.) I came back to SPN after it ended purely for Destiel and honestly hard to know how to feel about it. It’s great that Cas at least was confirmed in love with Dean but all along I feel like he was the more open book so it was less risky for the network to go there. Plus the cop out they built in with the whole “angels have no gender” thing they did in season 12? 13? Idk. Made me think they were trying to get away with “a nongendered celestial being fell in love with a human so it ~might~ be queer but it’s not ~gay~” if that makes sense. Anyway, all this to say I agree it would have been made better if Dean had told Sam in 15x19 that Cas had confessed and he regrets not being able to say it back. All I would add is maybe at the end of 15x20 after Sam and Dean reunite they drive down a road and stop when they see a figure standing on a cliff or something with his back to them. And when they get out and walk up, it’s Cas and he turns around smiling (like finally really smiling and looking free and happy with the wind blowing in his hair) and he says “Hello, Dean” and Dean smiles back and then -end scene-. Anyway that’s my head cannon. And I think it could have still been just ambiguous enough for the homophobes to delude themselves into believing it was not (gasp) gay. Anyway, glad I found your series! Love your analysis and genuine reactions!

I literally hopped on board this ship after starting to watch SPN a month and a half ago and now that I know how their storyline concluded (and that there's even any question anymore as to whether or not they're an item) my heart literally hurts for the massive missed opportunity that Destiel is for everyone it would have represented on screen. Like, hurts me to tears. And has driven me to fanfiction. To write fanfiction. For a 15 season series. I started at episode 1. Like three weeks ago. That's how badly I needed to do something about this. I literally can't watch the series without my own headcanon to top it off. (not so) fun fact: i watched spn much longer than you, since 2007. i wasn't originally a destiel shipper at all and thought they were just close friends (but dean was obviously bi, duh). i was sure they wouldn't make them a couple cos it's the cw we're talking about... but then as the seasons progressed i was like "oh so they are really gonna do that, make them canon?! wow, that makes all the sense in the world, going by literally EVERYTHING that has happened since s 4! yessss!" and i was convinced to become a shipper not by the fandom, but by the story itself :D then i was both sort of elated (15x18 😭) and disappointed with the finale (s15 ep 19-20) so in this house i pretend the last 2 eps didn't happen 😁 i didn't watch a frickin tv show for literally 15 years to get the ending we did 😐

By the way, on another note. Can you do a video on Merlin and Arthur? I remember the first episodes. I was so confused when I heard the name Guineviere. She's the one? And I was waiting for the build up with Arthur but then I got delivered a done deal that I was suppose to believe when there had been zero there up to that point. I was always annoyed when the focus shifted from Arthur and Merlin to Arthur and Gwen. I read them more like good friends than as being madly in love. As for Arthur and Merlin... the so called banter got out of line way too often. There was never that much consistency in making me believe that Merlin really should sacrifice so much for this one dude.

Their relationship was portrayed in much the same way as other relationships in the series. You know that meme where the guy is strumming a guitar and kinda serenading his girlfriend except he just keeps saying "I love you.... bitch. I love you! Bitch." That is exactly how Destiel felt. Both between the characters towards one another and as a viewer. I love the only addition being the kitchen scene! That would've been a cherry on top. Like it would fit with the narrative of the "not having, but just being/saying" and then have the call from Lucifer just cementing it. Oof that would've hurt so good. (I would've been happy with a "Hello Dean". And a "Cas" with a big smile or even a soft "Cas" as the credits role for the finale.) After the season finale with Dean becoming a demon and slowly absorbing info about the latter seasons in the past year, I am glad I jumped ship when I did. SPN and Dean and Castiel and their relationship will always have a big place in my heart since SPN kept me going during one of the worst points in my life, but it is only "canon" in the Spanish subtitles due to a rogue translator. ¡¡¡¡Yo hablo español solamente en mi corazon!!! On my way to watching the next videos on Dean and Cas. By the way, Dean seems bi to me and Cas is more... pansexual, is that the correct word? I was kinda ok with the slow burn but I didn't like the ending. If they went there and had Cas say it out loud, then they effing needed to address it on Dean's end too. Otherwise hint at it like you've been doing for 11 years and let us fill in the blanks. But Dean never even says Cas's name from that moment on. And we can't even read that as grieving because it's played as if it's a done deal. Cas is gone and life moves on, no need to even refer to a friend that was always there and... we don't even get Dean on his own thinking, we get nothing. ok, I'll stop.

Opinions about whether Dean is gay or bi doesn't bother me as such, it is the idea of Castiel being 'male' when I was under the impression angels are asexual and inhabit male or female hosts. For Misha to say it was a homosexual declaration of love I feel betrays what the angels were supposed to be. Clearly it was something the 'angel' felt for Dean, inhabiting Jimmy Novak was the complication - or Cas is a 'female' in a male body and we've seen that. However I'm up for looking at the dissection of the scenes and characters to see where it takes me.

Castiel could have done way, way better than Dean. Let's see... there's Kelly Kline who was a delight, Daphne his wife from when he was known as Emmanuel, Mandy the waitress from s12 who thought Cas was handsome, Nora from s9 who said Steve!Cas was special, the Djinn queen who we never met but is still Cas' current wife, Sergei, Benny the vampire, and Dr. Sexy. Castiel deserved better in general.

not gonna lie the first time i saw this video recommended to me i assumed it was gonna be criticism of destiel or whatever cos of the wall of swearing that covered dean and cas in the thumbnail and so i just scrolled past but now i'm here anyway so :)
