@Sleepx In Early Music, the tones of the scale are not all the same size as they are today (equal temperament). The result is that some keys sound more in tune (and some less in tune). Organs always sound better in meantone, one of the many temperaments.

Between the last decades of the Renaissance and the early decades of the early Baroque, the musicians made harmonic experiments using space. As in the Sonatas of Giovanni Gabrieli, B.Marini positions the 3 violins in different spaces, to obtain the echo effect. The chord is completed in the acoustic effect of the resonance. The painting had also experienced geometrical issues and spatial illusions before.

Marini's title in Italian reads: "Sonata in ecco con tre violini" - In Italian reads: "ECO" not "ECCO" that means "Here it is!" instead. :) :)

OK yes you're right the original title is that one, I just wanted to let you know that it is an "old italian" speech. in the modern italian language that "ECCO" is "ECO". :) just for information :) I apologize for my mistake.

Wait! If the 2 Violins and Lute are in the Balcony, then how can I see them if I’m in the Audience? It’s supposed to be a sonata with echoing violins. Right?

You can see them from the audience easily. It's a low, U-shaped balcony.

I know I'm really late, but I know that the composer himself wrote on the score that the 2nd and 3rd violins should not be seen by the audience. However I don't really know if they were actually hidden or they were like on a balcony or on the sides of a church, where the audience could see them. What's important is that the listeners should perceive the other two violins as an echo.

I'm afraid you are mistaken; you can look it up on IMSLP. This language comes directly from the _seicento._

@@VoicesofMusic An error by Marini or the scrivener. Even la crusca finds no antecedent. Orthographic errors are normally retained where the sense is understood but this one is misleading and the listener needs to know the correct meaning of the sonata being played
