Honestly, Puerto Rico needs to seek independence from The US. Statehood will not help at all, just ask those in Flint Michigan. Escape this corrupt government and then, hopefully, Puerto Rico can flourish.

Statehood has done ill for Native Hawai'ians and the same would happen in Puerto Rico. Mainlanders already treat our precious resources and land as something they are entitled to exploit. It is time for PR finally be free of colonial control. Independence is the answer.

I think our island Puerto Rico (Boriken) should be independent... you see We are a commonwealth almost a state and We export more money to the US than the US gives us so If We are going to be like that as a commonwealth We will be like that as a state. Independence. Take control of your homes, neighborhoods and communities. Have neighborhood watch meetings and address all your problems. Land Trusts and Property Owner's Associations. Now one cares for you as much as you do, don't expect it.

@@nolbertojcales1186 Concuerdo, pero yo creo que eso también está relacionado a algo que he notado en los Estados Unidos. Acá hay una glorificación de la empresa militar como esencia de la identidad estadounidense. Sin embargo, la manera en la que tratan a los veteranos es horrible. El nivel de pobreza y la falta de servicios médicos para esa comunidad es un gran problema. Una situación muy contradictoria que, en el caso de los puertorriqueños, se acentúa con el problema que señalas.

I remember since I was little the topic of statehood or independence always coming in school and my thoughts was always independence. Then people would say that we would be nothing without the US and I always felt that we were nothing to the US so why would they keep us as a state?

The US has done so much damage to Puerto Rico. They do not respect Puerto Rico. All of the presidents say they want to help PR but don’t. They all love PR but they only love the money they get out of PR. It’s a disgrace. Puerto Rico needs to wake up and smell the coffee and see the facts. Independence is the way to go if PR wants to become the most significant island on the face of the world.

Having lived in Puerto Rico the majority of my young life, I say NO to statehood. Free Associated State or Independence are much better choices that allows Puerto Rico to choose or carve its own path in the world.

Don't join the States. PR needs to stay PR and work it out w a public private relationship to get things done.

Are they telling everyone what a Public Private Relationship trully is???? If you do care about the public, you do it in their best interests, build something up, recap the money, etc... A private entity will do everything for max profit, milking the population out of its wallet... Build a public highway, everyone can use it, it takes a while, the money comes out of the tax payers but its there after a while. Let the private sector do it, you end up with a pricey tollway for centuries to come.

Dude, PR needs to get away from the USA... stop waiting to be rescued, and start digging. You need to divert that water away from the homes, and that can only be done with a shovel... not politicians.

They do a lot of work themselves but the dredging is a $150 million job and the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Growing up in New York City I saw many neighborhoods in Brooklyn New York being ignored because there were a lot of poor people living in those neighborhoods. The minute those neighborhoods were gentrified that is when everything changed and the big co-ops and condos are still being built all over New York City to this day. Mostly all the poor people were pushed out. That is what I see happening in Puerto Rico. After Maria there are still neighborhoods in Puerto Rico struggling while the US government has put up the money but its at a standstill where is not being used for the right reasons. The island of Puerto Rico as more Americans move in to the island than Puerto Ricans moving in. So when the island becomes gentrified like many neighborhoods in New York City have become. it is then that the politicians will start throwing more money to Puerto Rico and more will be getting done. Puerto rico will become more Americanized. Until then Puerto Ricans on the island will continue to struggle. When you start seeing co-ops and condos in the town's when you never thought you see that in Puerto Rico that is when the government will come in and stop pouring in the money to Puerto Rico because by then it won't be Puerto Rico it'll be more Americanized.

I really wish Puerto Rico would become its own country. I hate the argument that people state when they say we would be a third world country without US backing. When the reality is, we're treated like a third world country WITH US involvement. Only difference is that the money we generate would finally stay within our people.

The treatment of the Puerto Rico is horrible and the US government in my opinion needs a serious rebuild Puerto Rico campaign that would upgrade facilities, fix structures, and use new and innovative ways to improve the power infrastructure. Is there anything someone who is not from Puerto Rico can do to help?

I was not born here in Pr but, I have lived here for 20 years, in those 20 years, I have birthed 3 children here in Pr. I have watched the island dwindle year by year both economically and in the spirit of the beautiful people. Government in Pr needs to be held accountable. Too often, funds go missing, stolen, or simply never go to the intended project. Yes, I think Pr should become a state. Its not the perfect solution, but it gives the Puerto Rican people a voice. It also allows culture to step away from financial aid.

What other Caribbean islands have been receiving millions of dollars a year, plus foodstamps, disability benefits, tax exemptions, etc from abroad? How are they doing? What happened to our agriculture and industry. When you cross the border from Haiti to the Dominican republic, it's like crossing into a different universe. Why? Same people, same island. The DR government decided to invest in industry and tourism. Not perfect, but worlds apart from Haiti and PR.

Read the history of why Haiti is so poor. They had to pay reparations to France. $$$ in eternal debt. What happened with the $23 billion collected for the earthquake? No accountability - they assassinated the president. Where is the $. at least they could have built one building that could survive an earthquake. For the lates earthquake - not even the red cross dared to ask for donations. No one wants to say where the money went. They want Haiti without Haitians to explote their resources which include oil and mining.

So many pros and cons for statehood and independence. My parents were born in Puerto Rico, while my siblings and I born in NY. Do we even have a say in the staus of PR? I'd love Puerto Rico to be independent, but not having ever lived there, is it fair to have a position? All that I identify with is of Puerto Rico, yet im in NY. I'm certain my ambivalence is shared by millions on the mainland. Thank you for your work as a journalist. I work for a Union who represent Public Sector workers. Bianca, I congratulate you for your great capacity to transmit information in an educated and objective matter. Although tranquil and seemingly cool I see a strong commitment from your part to move the system into really serving the people. As to the status of the Island I prefer independence. I recognize however that our economy is dependant of the US and a transition to sovereignty needs to be well planned to be successful. Having Puerto Rico as a shameful colony has produced the results we already know. Statehood represents the annihilation of our nationality under the current constitutional frame of the US. Statehood for Puerto Rico is a necessity. The United States should compensate Puerto Rico's government back to 1917, because the Insular cases were racially biased decision that made the citizens of Puerto Rico second class American citizens with no path to statehood. As such Puerto Rico has suffered greatly, had it been allowed to pursue statehood as Hawaii and Alaska, Puerto Rico may very well could have been one of the wealthiest states in the Union. What a beautiful addition Puerto Rico would make to the United States as the 51st state! I envision it as a great symbol of America's diversity and as the Quebec of the USA. While independence is certainly another option, the potential loss of American citizenship may in the long run prompt the exodus of perhaps 500,000 to 1 million Puerto Ricans to the mainland similar to what happened when Algeria became independent and half a million Algerians moved to France within a few years. Whatever is decided, the status quo should not continue. Thank you for covering this important story!

INDEPENDENCE without a doubt! Here are just a few reasons why off the top of my head. (Not in chronological order) -Ponce Massacre -Rio Piedras Massacre -Gag Law (Ley de la Mordaza) Law 53 of 1948 that imposed a 10 yr prison sentence for flying the Puerto Rican flag 🇵🇷 until 1952 -Jones Act taxation of import goods -destruction and monopolization of Puerto Rico's own sugar industry -PR per capita, if compared as a state to other US states, supplies the US military with more servicemen & women than any other state in the US....and yet the government doesn't allow PR citizens to vote for President or have a voting member of Congress. -"Assassination" of Pedro Albizo Campos by radiation poisoning while imprisoned -1956 contraceptive drug trials that used Puerto Rico women as guinea pigs without their knowledge that actually made a significant number of them sterile as well as the deaths during the trials. WHY on Earth after knowing what the US government's track record in Puerto Rico is and the Federal government's historical view of us is, why would you still want to remain a second-class citizen in their eyes no matter if by statehood or as current status as a US territory??!! It's called the STOCKHOLM SYNDROME and that's exactly what majority of Puerto Ricans suffer from! INDEPENDENCE is the only way for the future generations. I don't say it lightly knowing that it literally could take a full century to realize this and the struggles that would lie ahead but it is possible knowing all that PR has to offer!

I’m from caimito pr what puertorico needs is too be independent. Have congress pay back billions in pain in suffering so we can use that money to rapair our infrastructure. We puertoricans have become lazy and dependent on government handouts. We need to stop voting democratic for one, Democrats are more concerned about trans community and their ability to go into girls bathrooms instead of fixing floods like this. I can tell that This young lady is extremely smart and well put together. But she is again relying on the people who put us in this mess in the first place.

This is a very good video that captures a terrible reality. The people are too good to be suffering this way. This is an exemplar community that has been hurt by corruption. The presenter has not been honest in acknowledging the corruption: The government cannot release a billion dollars to corrupt politicians because it will be stolen or mismanaged.

Puerto Rico should go totally independent because trusting someone else to take care of your health, safety or best interests leaves too many Puerto Ricans vulnerable to the obvious greed and corruptions inWashington DC and in Puerto Rico's own government who have made it a practice to parade Puerto Rico's need so that they can get rich by the donations that come in to help them but never make it to the Puerto Ricans that need the help. Puerto Ricans have always had a big heart and gone out of their way to help others. Its sad that American politicians have lost their consideration for the very people that they're supposed to serve. Puerto Rico deserves better than this. Going independent will allow them to set their own rules through self government. They can look at how Spain and the United States have failed them and set up rules and regulations that serve all of Puerto Rico and not just the rich.

I would like to see that it becomes a capital offense when a public official gets found guilty for fraud, misuse of funds, and any other type of illegal use of public funds that would be a start - Because the trend needs to move toward a serious attack on corruption in Puerto Rico, the next step is to make public the process and name names of the local and Puerto Rico politicians that make a promise and do not bring it to fruition. Most importantly, you need to make these specifics public, easy to understand, and continue your work as a great explainer of truth, speaking for the ones with no voice in the halls of government. I think statehood would come with a heavy price. That being the erosion of Puerto Rican culture , english would be enforced, Spanish would become the second language , the US flag would supersede the PR flag . In my opinion independence is the way to go , to truly liberate Puerto Rico to create it's own path maintain its culture , and finally have its freedom. It would be tough at first but worth it in the long run.

Even if Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 became a state and everything you said happen, the people on the island can control its local culture just like the individual states. But since 1951 when Puerto Rico was approved to be a common wealth, in the long term this hasn’t worked. Statehood has its pros and cons. Independence would be Russian roulette. At least in statehood there is a history in which the people on the island can study like Hawaii and Alaska etc. But Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 needs to stop kicking the can down the road and take accountability for its future.

@@TheNEXXFAZE In Hawaii and Alaska their cultures became tourist attractions and everything became whitewashed. The U.S. has laws in place that prevent P.R. from succeeding. Without laws like the merchant laws Puerto Rico would hold onto a substantial amount of its own money. Also if Puerto Rico becomes a state I can assure you religious holidays like Dia de los Reyes would banned and/or become simple tourist attractions and kids in P.R. who grow up learning only English in schools and learning about predominately U.S. history will not learn about the culture we would hope that they would preserve. Very few people in Hawaii speak the native language, very few people in Alaska speak their inuit language because natives aren't even well represented there, and almost no one in Louisiana speaks French or Cajun.

Making PR a state will not fix the problem. They always talk about money money and will they get more money

The USA approves money for Puerto Rico because PR pays high federal taxes annually. Nothing is free. Clarification for the freeloader ALIENS who enter the island along the coasts and asume that the island gets something for free. As part of the American nation it pays high taxes. I am not complaining, good that it is that way and the island is not a burden to anybody. HERE THE EVIDENCE. The recent economic crisis on the island has put a huge dent in the federal tax revenue collected from Puerto Rico, but it still added up to $3.6 billion in fiscal year 2016. That's not much less than some states where residents do pay full income tax: Vermont and Wyoming paid $4.5 billion in federal taxes that year._ *Puerto Rico workers pay the majority of federal taxes that Americans on the mainland pay - payroll, social security, business taxes, gift taxes, estate taxes and so on.The island pays more than 3.6 billions in federal taxes a year.* Bruce Jones says: The beautiful people and island of Puerto Rico contribute roughly $3.5 Billion to the Federal IRS Gross Collections every year. That’s about $1,000 per person every year on average.

As a Puerto rican millennial , we need to move back to the island and preserve our culture for future generations. Education, infrastructure, and health should be main priority in Puerto Rico (vieques and culebra needs their own hospital !!) If Puerto rico became independent , hopefully the Jones act would become abolished (double tax on imports) on the same goods received in the US. Lastly, business/JOB creation is crucial to the economy. Puerto rico is rich in natural resources! We should focus on agriculture to not only produce our own food but to export it to neighboring islands and even the US for profit.

100% in support of independence. It's the only action that is actually within the hands of the puerto rican people. All other options require approval of congress which will never happen. Also, Boricuas are more than capable of governing ourselves and providing for each other even better than under colonialism. We are being robbed everyday and then wondering why we are poor. Our relationship with the united states is a toxic relationship, and you do not fix a toxic relationship by getting married. You fix it by leaving the abuser as soon as possible. It's long past time we left our abuser and began living a life of freedom and hope for future generations.

There is a misconception of taxes in Puerto Rico. Only individuals who benefit from Federal income sources pay federal taxes. If you only have income from a none federal job in Puerto Rico you do not pay federal income tax. Most other federal taxes would not effect the average citizen. Most of the infrastructure problems in PR would be solved by it become a state and having more direct federal funding as well as more private interest coming from the states. But if the residents of PR would prefer to be independent that is what they should have.

We do not file federal taxes unless you work for the federal government but do file local state taxes and do contribute to the federal government in many other ways by deductions in home mortgages to fema..social security..jones act importing taxes etc etc Look it up and you will see that we contribute more billions then what we get

The military units in Puerto Rico has equipment and Engineering Soldiers who Can help to better the Island instead of letting the equipment deteriorate. Too much politicians with no solutions for the people. Fire them all

Let's be realistic let's smell the coffee that we make here on the island and let's ask the politicians not the people if the people are saying this has been going on for 20-30 years there goes your answer so what are you going to do about the politicians video the politicians and report an interview each representative the governor everybody because their politicking

I know this may be an unpopular opinion but here is an idea. The government does not and will never care about the people of Puerto Rico or any other state or large city. So what’s the answer, look at all the best communities in America, none were built or funded by the government. They were all built by investors who wanted to make money. I understand that many people in Puerto Rico hate rich people. Put aside your hate and consider partnering with them. Consider a win-win scenario where your city is rebuilt and the investors make money. When done correctly everyone in the city could have a house without any debt.

Last but not least you show videos how the rich come in and buy up the land which they're not able to because it should be grandfather then with the laws that we that we live here they're not property they're making millions of dollars while the Puerto Rican people are poor that does not make no sense but one thing God does not allow ugly karma is coming so be prepared

Statehood would be better for Puerto Rico, for many reasons. First Economically, base on the representation in Congress Puerto Rico would have from six to eight representatives base on their population.
