You are very correct. The huge influx of people to our province since the pandemic started has caused this housing affordability problem. The Maritime provinces were mostly ignored by the rest of Canada and the world as we were a lowly " have not" province ( The thought was that it was a nice place to visit but people wouldn't want to live here). The province was definitely not ready for such a huge influx of people as has happened in the last three years. It had never happened before, quite the opposite happened in fact, as young people left NS to find work elsewhere for years. So, younger Nova Scotians who do not make a high salary because wages are lower here, or those who are on a fixed retirement income are having a difficult time with the current housing affordability issue. This population growth is changing our slower paced, laidback way of life. ( which is one of the reason why we are friendly!). Even the amount of traffic on our highways has increased noticeably in the last few years. Our healthcare system is also struggling under the strain of rapid population growth. The wait list for getting a family doctor is now in the many tens of thousands of people. Wait times at the hospital to see a doctor for those without one is many hours long now. Some people leave without being seen. Many of our doctors retired in recent years or have moved to other better paying provinces or the US and there is no one to replace them. Every Nova Scotians knows someone without a doctor. It is a very disturbing situation but one your subscribers interested in moving here should know about, especially if they have any ongoing health issues requiring regular care and monitoring. Not all population growth is positive, especially when it is so rapid as we are experiencing now. The Maritime provinces are beautiful, are typically safer than other places ( although crime in the city especially has been growing with population growth ) and people tend to look out for each other here historically, but we have our challenges and they are growing with the rapidly growing population. I, for one, hope it stabilizes soon as it is quite unsustainable at current rates.

I am so confused about this way of thinking. Governments, be they provincial or federal, do not prepare for things, they are not forward thinking. They react to things. The only way to increase services is to overload the system and start that wheel to squeaking, it's the only way to get any grease these days. I hear it over and over, young people can't afford housing, healthcare is overloaded, cost of living is going up...Guess what? That's happening everywhere, not just here. And in a lot of places, it's WAY worse than Atlantic Canada. You think 300-400k for a home is astronomical, when a similar home in Ontario or BC will cost over a million. No wonder others are coming to take advantage of the cheaper housing prices. Can you blame them? You can, literally, save half a million dollars. What would you do for half a million dollars? Would you move? I know I would (and did). I pay taxes (a lot of them) and I spend money (a lot of it) in the local economy. I fail to see how these things are a negative. Should I ignore an opportunity to live in this wonderful province simply because I was born in Ontario? Aren't we all Canadian here, after all?
@dorisbetts3012
@dorisbetts3012 2 жыл бұрын
@@iangates8821 Good points, and I don't blame you for the personal financial gain your move rewarded you with, but the fact remains that the large influx of people arriving here over such a short timeframe is causing hardship for many Nova Scotians. No one saw this influx coming, pre-covid. An influx of such a large number over such a short timeframe has not happened here since Dutch immigration to the province after World War 2. Atlantic Canadians know all about leaving the region for more pay as so many have left to work in Alberta for decades, but this unforeseen population growth over the last few years was not something the provincial or municipal governments prepared for in terms of the added pressure put on existing services and infrastructure. The wait list to get a family doctor is now at 130,000 people and the number one reason for being on the list is " new to the area". Where do these people who are unattached to physicians go when ill? To the few hospitals that still have their emergency departments open 24/7. The healthcare system is trying to play catch up, but the squeaky wheel isn't able to get greased fast enough. My ill 69 year old brother-in-law waited all night at the hospital emergency department last week, 18 hours in total, before leaving in the morning without even seeing a doctor. Unheard of here! Tragically, two Nova Scotians died over the New Year's weekend in emerg waiting to be seen by a doctor. We have ourselves a serious crisis! Of course, it is complicated. We have physicians and healthcare professionals retiring or leaving for work elsewhere while our baby boomers are getting older and needing more services, as is the case across Canada, but we also have a very large elderly population in need of more healthcare services than in most other provinces and this unprecedented rapid population has set the stage for a "perfect storm" scenario. Hoping things become more balanced in the not too distant future for the benefit of us all.

@@dorisbetts3012 There have been approximately 50,000 (a high estimate) people that have come from outside Nova Scotia in recent years. That means, based on the numbers you provided, at least 80,000 of that 130,000 people waiting for a family doctor are native Nova Scotians. Seems to me the politicians are the ones dropping the ball on this and I will be sure to pay close attention to what they're saying during their campaigns, come the next election. It does no good to lament the influx of people since that isn't the problem, it's just making the problem more obvious. The problem is that the politicians in Nova Scotia are not doing their job, plain and simple. I truly hope someone who runs is up for the job and can make strides towards getting us the level of care we need. It'll take years, but at least there would be a light at the end of the tunnel.

As a life long Citizen of NS. What concerns me is all the people from away who had properties that were worth so much and salaries far above what the average Nova Scotian made. They came in large numbers during the pandemic and drove housing and rental prices through the roof and now Nova Scotian families who have always lived here are going homeless because there is no longer enough housing and the price of housing has been driven up out of reach. Some of the stories are heartbreaking.

I'm all for people coming here, especially people from the higher earning provinces. It's the only way our province will grow and along with that eventually local wages will need to catch up. My wife is in HR and they get more and more Resume's from people outside of the province with asking salaries of 20% or more above the local highest bracket for said position. Most applicants don't want to budge downwards so NS employers end up losing them. Eventually the job market will have to adapt to paying harder wages in order to keep and attack talent and that is what we all are waiting for. We have the population boom now, but need the industry boom to follow and ideally you want foreign industry to settle offices here that are used to paying higher wages. Competition should sort out the rest to increase wages overall

@bibascanadianjourney my experience biba since 2015! I still live in halifax. 30 year old tradesmen, Moved here in 2015 from Ontario, before it was cool. Got to listen to everyone in the neighborhood/work tell me the house I bought was on the market for over a year and couldn't sell etc.. and that I was so niave for randomly moving here and buying it, and that my investment wouldn't appreciate, not like i cared lol, but they had to let me know. 290k investment turned into 900k in 8 years not bad. Never found halifax, particularly friendly, i work in the government sector and was constantly told that i was stealing jobs from maritimers, etc.. Typically from the newfoundlanders who had also moved here for work. Or the guy who was mad at me for being employed because the government didnt hire his brother because of his 2-3 DUI charges. That said I love living here, won't ever move, appreciate the select few people that have been nice to me most of them also being from out west or immigrants.The maritimes is comparable to high school, gossipy, complain about everything, and abuse the system until it turns against you. I will admit, for younger people, this is a hard province to get your feet planted. Nepotism here is amazing. Affordability is now catching up to the rest of canada. Side note My sister moved here in the end of 2021 with her kids and husband. She's a doctor and doesn't really like practicing here. Why go visit medical professionals if your 8 minutes googling, negates 11 years of university.. I begged her to move out here so we could raise our families together. She finds it very unfriendly and unprofessional. Fortunately, they have made some new friends through their kids' school friends and are finally now thriving. Nova scotia is beautiful, I personally love it. There's great people here. My wife is from the eastern shore. I always ask her if I exude my upper canadian privilege, and she usually laughs at me and tells me I'm cute
