I new to commentaries I brought one to try cheap second hand see if it can deepen my understanding of the bible. I didn’t know about 4 different types. I much more needed devotional one learning understanding and applying to my life I autistic so my eyes naturally see bible like a true story book I see black and white. I feel a commentary could help see bible in different colours instead black and white alone. When I do use any resources I do pray about information ask lord usually know if ok a warm calm floaty feeling inspiration joy from Holy Spirit.

Hey Austin. Great video! Toward the end, you mentioned Chrysostom and Augustine. I would encourage you and your viewers to focus on the Orthodox Church Fathers and give them priority since they lived in pre-modernity and spoke the native language, more or less. Here are a few minds that have commentaries: St. Augustine St. Bede St. Cassiodorus St. John Chrysostom St. Basil the Great St. Gregory of Nyssa St. Athanasius of Alexandria St. Cyril of Alexandria St. Ephrem the Syrian St. Gregory the Great St. Theophylact of Ohrid St. Maximus the Confessor St. Symeon the New Theologian I recall Hartley’s The Go-Between line: The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

Great video. Commentaries are a great tool . ( we stand on the shoulders of giants ) You gave great advice on their use ! #1 is so important. I am just a guy in the pews but for me the expository commentaries are my favorite. Also running out of shelf space . They can be addictive ,in a good way . Great work on the video! Blessings

This is the first video I've seen of yours and I just want to say thank you. This is great advice. I really want to get a couple of the commentaries you mentioned. Your tips are so helpful. Bible first, commentaries later.

God has commanded us to study and search the Scriptures and to keep His precepts diligently! 2 Tim. 2:15; John 5:39; Psalm 119:4. I highly recommend the Conflict of the Ages series by Ellen White which is a 5 volume set covering the entire Bible. Definitely don't knock it till you try it! Matthew Henry's commentary is also wonderful. It's available as an app for free. The Puritans used to read it by the fire daily mornings and evenings along with the Bible.

Great explanation vedio here, good job, Question; (maybe a topic for a future vid) is there a way to study a word/ scripture In Greek or Hebrew piece-meal style the way you would looking up a word's foreign language interpretation using dictionary, app or software? I think I saw someone do it once but it went by so quick, Or is it necessary to learn Greek and Hebrew?
@GospelSimplicity2 жыл бұрын
Great question! So there's definitely ways to look up words individually, but we must remember that words find their meanings in context. Therefore, while you can learn certain things piecemeal, it won't replace learning the languages. I could consider a video on that. I do have one video on my Bible study process which might be helpful

Thank you for this information, I have to really try to just read a book through on my own and then go back with commentaries. What do you think on life application bible or the kjv know the word.
@GospelSimplicity4 жыл бұрын
It’s my pleasure! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I take Sundays off from KZbin and didn’t get around to it yesterday. In any case that’s a great practice! I’m not familiar with the KJV Know the Word, but the Life Application Study Bible is the first study Bible I ever owned. It kind of just depends on what you’re looking for. The life application Bible will help you see practical implications for your biblical reading which is great. Sometimes I think it stretches things, and these days I prefer to get more technical background and do the devotional application on my own, but that’s just a preference. Definitely a super popular study Bible though and for good reason
