Have you thought about painting your own icons with acrylic paint as the medium? It would make a great medium if you intend to make an icon to pass down through the generations because acrylic paint takes an estimated 400 years to fade on direct sunlight or fluorescent light and if kept out of direct sunlight it basically almost never fades.

As a Catholic I have to ask my Orthodox brethren, why would you use the protestant bible edited by Shakespeare for a heretic prince? It was vandalised of many books and is a poor translation even if it sounds beautiful. I might quote it as I grew up in a protestant country where that is what we hear but to study the bible with that version? Only if there was not a good Catholic or Orthodox translation because I know where that came from, I do not know King James.

Love it. Those are all quite beautiful. I love the WWII saint. One of my personal heroes is Witold Pilecki who I am convinced is a saint. What is the canonization process in the Orthodox Church? Is there overlap in the case of schism? *St. Anthony of Padua, patron of lost things St. Jude, patron of lost causes
@FirstNameLastName-is6yb5 жыл бұрын
I think it's just once a bunch of people are pretty sure he's a saint, he is. Then Priests'll mention him, and their bishops, and then their Patriarch. If your dude is probably a saint, ask people about it. Pray on it. Maybe he'll be like Saint Nicholas and pop in, let you see your right. If not, no biggie. Typically a Synod meeting will be called to investigate, and as long as he didn't steal from the cookie jar while he was little and was good, he'll be canonised. Before Canonization, they are in the "Glorified phase", ie some think he's a Saint, including some priests etc, but the Synod hasn't made a decision.
@carissstewart32115 жыл бұрын
@@FirstNameLastName-is6yb I am certain that he is in heaven and therefore is a saint. I believe he lived a life of heroic virtue - the man intentionally had himself arrested and sent to Auschwitz. There he set up an underground resistance and passed on information about the horrors going on there. He has not been declared a saint by the Catholic Church and to my knowledge there is no cause for sainthood open.
@FirstNameLastName-is6yb5 жыл бұрын
@@carissstewart3211 Heroic acts don't make a Saint; if that were the case, Desmond Doss and Churchill would be saints (Or, demons, demanding on your politics, no judgements here.) He sounds like a great man, but I'm note sure he seems worthy of Glorification. I'd take it up with your Starets.
@carissstewart32115 жыл бұрын
@@FirstNameLastName-is6yb just to be clear, I'm Catholic. I'm simply curious to know the difference between the canonization processes between our two Churches. I agree that heroism doesn't make a saint. I also admire a group of female aviators known as the Night Witches, but as they were Soviets, well, I'll be pleasantly surprised to meet them in heaven. Heroic acts don't make saints. Christ does. Coupled with saving faith, heroic acts may point to the action of sanctifying grace in one's soul.

The cheapest icons that I have are printed by lithography on glossy paper which is simply glued on to a wooden panel. More expensive than that are “handmade” icons which are printed directly on to the wood by a silkscreen. This process is also known as serigraphy and it is not misleading to call it handmade. Serigraphy can put a thick layer of ink or paint on wood, and the paint can be actual gold. Still more expensive are fully hand painted icons. These are said to be “written” since they always have some text, and the picture is like an adjunct to the text. Catholics should know that the preamble to Pastor Aeternus commits the Pope to respecting the veneration of icons. His Holiness has the power to close down the Latin Mass, but evidently not the power to prohibit icon corners in the home. One to bear in mind if things get rough. Catholics might also consider getting a cheap laminator and having a few laminated prayers to take on holiday. I keep mine in the car boot and can call at a strange church to say a prayer like the Litany of Loreto in the Lady Chapel or the church itself if it is dedicated to Our Lady. I would suggest getting a laminator and building up a collection of laminated prayers first, and then acquiring a few serigraphs. You may search for the Litany of Loreto online by highlighting the text with your mouse, right-clicking and then left-clicking to search. Icons remind me of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The icons of the Four Evangelists have their names in Greek but with Latin letters. The text of the Gospels is Latin.
