Thanks so much. I hate throwing away plastic items. There`s enough waste on this planet already. I remembered my dad refilling BIC lighters in his workshop and sealing them with a tiny screw. He past away last year and I couldn`t ask him, how to do it. I`m really glad you put this on YT. I think they should forbid one-way lighters.

~30 gauge Leur lock hypodermic needle; slower fill, but it fits really well over the end of the butane fill nozzle and seals both there and on the lighter side quite well. Just don't try to push the ball out with it.

@@PetesShopMakes To explain better, I stuck electrical tape to the bottom of the lighter, punctured both the tape and lighter seal with the tack, removed tack, filled, reinstalled tack. Tape stayed on lighter. Perfect seal, works great. Also, on the butane tank, I used a plastic fitting (included with tank) closer in size to the fill pocket instead of the stock metal tube. Cheers

why are the flames smaller? there is other way to do it properly from the top and it works without damaging nothing or keeping that pin there all the time chance for it to pop out releasing flammable gas dangerously
@ryanryan8Ай бұрын
I think the factory fills them originally from the bottom and places the seal, which you remove (see the first video). So, filling from the bottom is the proper way.

Really?!?! That's pretty dope! I've never seen or even heard of them having something like that. Does it specify what its actual intended purpose is? I would assume they offer it for lighters that may have a loose-fitting connection where gas leaks out when you try to refill it but I doubt they consider that it can and will be used to refill BIC brand and other non-refillable lighters. Hmm... that's pretty cool. I'll have to see if I can find a can of it and check it out. Thanks for the info and the comment.

I've installed valves; that I'd had removed from refillable lighters; into two standard Bic lighters; thus far. Quite tedious; the first took me four or five tries and the second was on the first try. I one would have a die tool of that small of size; it would make it way easier.
@PetesShopMakes3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've seen some videos of people doing that, and yes being able to tap some threads in the bottom would make that a lot easier for sure.
@justinberry3991 Жыл бұрын
Just use the big round tip fitting that comes on the cap of your refill canister. Fits perfectly and snuggly into the recess at the bottom of the Bic.
@grumblycurmudgeon Жыл бұрын

"Use a gasket, Sideshow Bob." That pack of reusable putty cost you more than a 100-pack of gaskets would have. Sugaru works fine, too. But - and stick with me here - what works best of all is to take the bloody fill valve out of any cheap POS disposable lighter (the threaded variety, for preference, though any will work) drill out a hole 1/64 smaller than the valve, dab some fast-set epoxy around the valve's EXTERIOR, and press-fit the two together. Of course, then you don't have the joy of a perpetual pinhole leak of flammable gas inside your pocket, which - I gotta level with you - I personally am NOT a fan of, but hey, you do you. Finally, here's a quick Q&A for any of y'all using the thumbtack method: Q. Know what happens to a gas when it heats up? A. It EXPANDS. Q. Know what happens to a lighter (and therefore the gas contained therein) when it sits in a car for any length of time during approximately 8-10 months out of the year? A. It HEATS UP. Q. Know what happens when one has an expanding gas trapped within a containment vessel? A. IT TAKES THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE TO ESCAPE. And finally, Q. Know what happens when the friction of metal on plastic exerted by an unaffixed, smooth steel shaft within an imperfect, man-made hole is finally overcome by the non-trivial pressure exerted by an expanding gas seeking the path of least resistance to equalize with atmospheric pressure? A. IT TURNS INTO A POINTY PROJECTILE TRAVELLING AT ORBITAL ESCAPE VELOCITY WHILE RICOCHETING AROUND THE INTERIOR OF A CAR, POSSIBLY WHILE *YOU* ARE INSIDE OPERATING IT AS WELL! In short... if you ARE going to half-ass this "solution", maybe it's best you ARE venting most of your butane to atmosphere. After all, that's less pressure build-up, thereby decreasing your need to explain to a very annoyed ER triage nurse why you have a pushpin embedded in your skull. Yanno... because SCIENCE?
@char63r517 Жыл бұрын
Filling is not problem. I don't know how you keep the gas from just immediately leaking out around the diameter of the push pin? I've even tried making a gasket with a piece of wide rubber band. The gas leaks out, if not immediately, then quietly and steadily. I'll try @Tailslide50 electrical tape idea as a way to keep the push pin in air tight. Anyone experiencing this and found a better solution? I amazed that in the video, aluminum [push pin] next to plastic is able to hold back the pressurized gas.
@ryanryan8Ай бұрын
Have you tried pushing the tack in deep by forcing it firmly against a table or other hard surface? Or maybe when you initially popped the seal, you didn't make a round hole?

Good video btw! Yea I like the clippers, they're not adjustable either and I don't think they make em like they used to, I realize Bics aren't adjustable but the flame is no where near as high as a box,maybe it's the cold had to warm up or the butane u used too!?idk
@PetesShopMakes5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes. The cold definitively affected the flame height plus after filling you’re technically supposed to wait a little bit because the butane does cool the lighter itself down quite a bit also preventing it from having a flame of standard height. I can assure you once they get warmed up the work just like new.
