I have experienced bilateral distal bicep tendon ruptures & surgical repairs. Left bicep ruptured opening a house window. and 5 years later the Right distal bicep ruptured doing repetitive lifting of returned Ballot Boxes in the 2020 NC Election. Fortunately, Medicare allowed me to have the surgery!

I have a simular problem ..but I had the shingles on the left inner arm about 5 years ago...and at that time I had lower biceps pains right at that area ...I'm back at the gym lifting weights and trying to built up my right lower biceps muscle ..I lift weights for many years but not super extreme ...could this problem be related to the shingles I had ? Can I use weight lifting to bring back my right lower bicep muscle ? My left side is perfect the right lower bicep muscle moved up about one inch more or less.....I've been training normal with different biceps exercises included ....any recommendations ? I've been a diesel mechanic and tile setter for many years so I'm constantly using my arms working or at the gym.... Thank you, Dirk

I lifted light a couple days ago and never heard a pop but when I woke up in the morning I’m not able to straighten both of my arms. It hurts to straighten my arms, hold anything, touch my bicep. It starts from my bicep and goes down to my elbow. Any ideas of what this could be?

It could mean alot of thing. Since its bulging outwards, you could have an overdevelopped bicep long head. But if it isnt it is potential you did tore your bicep. Whatever it is it never hurts to check on the doctor.

Is it possible to experience age discrimination when it comes to surgery? I think so, I'm experiencing it now. I have a short head bicep tear, I have seen two orthopedic surgeons so far, I am 62 years old and I can read between the lines, each doctor's goal was to talk me out of any surgery. They recommend rehab and just living with it. I can still be active (they encourage that) but not "too" active. My love for bodybuilding and martial arts is done. I am convinced that if I was a 25 year old athlete they would say, "let's do the surgery tomorrow", but because I can still walk to the bathroom and have a bowel movement, that's good enough for my daily life. I guess I will seek a third opinion. Plus I don't like the visual deformity which is important to me.
@OrthoEvalPal
@OrthoEvalPal 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexis, So, I wouldn't call it age discrimination. Many surgical decisions are made around age because of tissue integrity and healing properties. I have never seen a short head biceps rupture. That would be super rare.
@alexisjigalin1006
@alexisjigalin1006 3 жыл бұрын
@@OrthoEvalPal The doctor did tell me it was rare not much precedent out there to compare it to. I think I just took it personally because I've been an athlete all my life, still believe I can go through everything and don't associate myself with my calendar age. Still will get a third opinion. Thank-You for taking the time to answer me, I appreciate it.
@victoriaqueen5761

EDITED: To add content at the end Alexis, Of course I can't say whether your particular case is age discrimination, BUT . . . I can testify with 100% assurance that age discrimination does, indeed, exist. I've been on the planet more than a few decades, and I currently have more than my share of physical challenges, most of them clearly visible to the naked eye, SO . . . I can also attest to - what I refer to as "quality discrimination". Many physicians - certainly not all - believe that it is their right (or duty, not sure which) to decide if the QUALITY of MY LIFE is worth the TIME, the EFFORT and the EXPENSE, that it would cost to improve it! I ripped my bicep a little less than a week ago. I have the huge, misplaced bicep muscle, aka: "Popeye Bicep", and a humongous bruise just below it. I live with pain every day of my life, and have for the past 40 years. I take some heavy duty pain meds, so I know all about severe pain. I'm only saying all of this to make the point that, I KNOW PAIN; but . . . What I felt when it actually ripped, tore, separated, whatever it does . . . was so far beyond ANY pain that I have EVER experienced, that I don't believe the words to describe it have yet entered the dictionary! When it hit the first time, after screaming, loudly, I sat on my bed and cried like a baby, for at least 20 minutes! I DON'T CRY FOR PAIN! I may cry for many other reasons, but I don't cry for pain! BUT . . . I DID! I CRIED! I have NEVER felt anything like that in my entire life! I said the first time; I got that similar excruciating pain (mild, compared to the first one) several more times, until I learned which movements NOT to make, and which directions NOT to move my arm in! ONCE I got clear on which movements - and remembered NOT to make them, I still feel some degree of pain with EVERY movement, but it's tolerable! And I have to take into consideration that this shoulder (my left), and entire arm had issues before. I won't try for repair, for reasons too detailed to get into here, but I would love to know some legitimate exercises, or methods of treatment, etc., that could be done at home! I have read so many varying suggestions on line. One says heat; the other says ice. Once says immobilize it, while the next one says to exercise, to the point of the pain. Some say wrap it with an ACE bandage, or some type of constriction sleeve, others say let it be free. Some say keep it in a sling. There are so many different opinions, even someone with decent deduction skills, can't make heads, nor tails, of it all! Some say that frequent massage will help it heal faster, by keeping more blood flow to it. I have no medical background, but that sounds logical, but then again, would I actually be doing harm? I don't know, and that's the problem. There are a couple of points that they all did appear to agree on . . . That the estimated healing time - assuming you follow directions (whatever those are) and do not re*injure it - is between 4 months, and one year!!! OUCH!! I definitely don't like hearing that it might be that long! And, another thing that they ALL seemed to agree on, is the benefit of regular Cortisone (I'm assuming shots). I realize this video was posted a year ago, but if by chance the doctor is still checking these comments . . . I'd love to hear which side you favor in some of the above comparisons, Sir. Anything that would be helpful, and make this situation easier to deal with, would be so much appreciated, with eternal gratitude! Blessings to ALL who are currently dealing with pain in your body. Just remember that 'NOTHING IS FORVER'. MY prayer for you is, that tomorrow will be a much better, and much brighter day, with NO PAIN! ❤

I do bodybuilding/powerlifting and was pulling 765 pounds at gym last night and used overhand underhand grip also known as neutral and heard pull noise/sensation in my right bicep the hand where the grip was underhand. Some pain but by no means severe pain and this morning no bruising or anything. Usually with tear there is significant pain, bruising, and bicep looks like a tennis ball bunched up correct? I have none of those symptoms but I do have some pain and don’t have the strength or range of movement in my right arm I usually do. I do feel like the bicep did pull up from the elbow a little though but that could just be because it’s tight after the injury. I was icing it last night. I’m hoping mine is just a strain. so based off this test, Mine seems more intact, no health insurance, never got an mri, but when to doctors , they did hook test , they said still in tact but I know for fact my bicep is slightly up higher, i watched this thoroughly , did my own hook test . would this mean a partial tear? i did a couple rounds of beachbodys shaun t insanity on it last year, no pain but i think the injury was about 2 years ago, Im able to shave no problem and do warehouse work and lift pretty good , but still looks uneven asthetically. Should i get an mri anyways? and i hear a 3 week window of surgery after the injury, how about if my injury is in fact partial would it still have to be 3 week window after the injury in order to do it. only issue is there is some spasm if lifting a heavier object like up to past shoulder length when doing warehouse work but I'm able to do pullups no problem so i dont know what to do here

I had a distal bicep tear sparring. It hurt like hell. Slight bruising the next day but hook test was good. My bicep looked just a hair different. Dr said it was a partial tear and to get it fixed. So I had it repaired. He said it a better repair as a partial tear as the tendon didn’t atrophy. Nightmare recovery but worth it in the long run. Get an MRI bro, peace of mind and maybe a needed repair before it gets worse.

Hi. I have torn my right biceps 💪. And it deformed similar to what is in the video. But when I do the hook test I can feel the tendon is exists and strong. I’ve all right with twisting things but the lifting weights power was decreased 30%. Can it be partly torn ?? The doctor think so too. But how can it be partly if the muscle is deformed??? Thanks for the help.

Could be a partial tear. Could also be a muscle fibre tear (although less likely)

I had a partial distal tear and the dr still suggested getting surgery. Nightmare recovery if you’re active but worth it.

The “right time” passed…didn’t it? I read you have 2 weeks to repair or it becomes very difficult to re-attach?
@ronc4146
@ronc4146 Жыл бұрын
I've seen from other sources that the preferred window is up to 3 weeks, 4-6 are questionable. After that, it is likely the tendon has retracted far enough that getting it to stretch back enough for re-attachment is extremely difficult, as well as some other complications. And at those extended time frames they may end up having to use cadaver tendons and other parts to do the repair, which is very expensive. Do not let any urgent care or Primary doctor blow you off just because you are underinsured or older. This injury is most common with middle aged men in their 40's and 50's (90%+ of cases), and sex/age discrimination towards men in the medical field is horrible. I clearly had a torn bicep and was blown off by the first urgent care dr I saw who did not do any actual physical exam or manipulation testing, no radiology, and said to simply ice it for 2 weeks before following up with my PCP,. I then got blown off again by my own primary doctor who slogged slowly through a very long process of doing his own xray (reportedly negative, but the xray isn't really the proper diagnostic tool for a soft tissue tear), then ordering a CT scan (which took a week and half), then when that came back positive for a an irregular deformity (described as possibly being a tear) waiting another 1-1/2 wks for an MRI referral to be approved, then again for another referral to be approved for an Orthopedic Dr. It took 7 weeks from beginning to end until I finally got to the Ortho dr, and by then it was too late. The medical system fails men miserably, and you have to be aggressive, assertive, and push hard to get fair treatment in time. God forbid you may be slightly overweight and clearly not a weight lifter or an athlete and they will totally blow you off in order to save their "insurance utilization rate" rating and keep it down at your expense so they get their annual bonuses from their medical group. They'll take care of the young adults or teenagers and younger out of principle, and take care of those with Medicare (because they can charge the government for everything and receive higher reimbursements then even those with insurance with no questions asked by the government), but if you are a middle-aged male they could care less. They'll tell you to just live with it.

What would be wrong if the hook test works when my thumbs up but when my thumbs facing me I can’t hook
@OrthoEvalPal

The biceps is placed on "slack" when the thumb is facing you so it will not be so prominent. If you are getting a good "hook" with the thumb up, that is good.

WTF, did he just say you can opt to not get it repaired and just live with a tendon torn off your bone? Just live with the weakness since it doesn't cause pain? I would of thought something like this would be painful AF? That's just crazy a tendor is literally snapped off and in his bicep wound up like a tongue in a chameleon.
@OrthoEvalPal

I usually encourage people to have the distal biceps repaired because it will limit you functionally more than a proximal biceps tear. I have seen some who refuse and they go on with life but have to modify their lifting with that arm.

5/17/2021 At the beginning of your video, you need to confess that you are not a medical doctor, nurse practitioner or any other type of healthcare provider, and that you are a PT. Also, leave to a medical doctor the diagnosing an injury.

I don't know what license, title or position he holds, but I do know that a physical therapist IS a healthcare provider, and truth be told, they know more about the muscles and bones of the body, that many of the doctors do, especially those who's practice is non-orthopedic. That's why so many doctors defer to their knowledge. That is their specialty. How/when did you learn of all the things that you say he's not, and decide to belittle the thing that you say he is? Just curious. 💞

And just from curiosity sake, I checked. In the description section, below the video, he list his NAME, immediately followed by PT, at least twice that I saw, plus it's the same in the video header! He has nothing to "confess", but you might!
