Have you guys noticed the solar lampposts all along the cycle route? I'm glad to see technology like this being implemented in our cities.

I wonder how well they work now 5 years on? If they've worked out well it would be a great option for street lighting in other locations, especially where trenching for cable ducts is difficult and/or there's poor mains electricity supplies.

So... this is what utopia looks like. Over here (Toronto, Canada), infrastructure (especially the bit where car has to yield right-of-way to bicycle) like this would probably be labeled as 'war on cars', and the politicians proposing such measure would promptly be voted out of office.
@dutchman76237 жыл бұрын
Not when bicycling becomes main transportation. Many people in the neighborhood shown in the video have cars, but use their bicycle to go shopping, sporting, visit family and friends, and for an evening out. It is about ten kilometers to city center and three to a railway station.

If you are interested in cycle-infrastructure, there is the Not Just Bikes channel which is run by a Canadian living in Amsterdam and who references Toronto a lot and has a few video's about Toronto as well.

I really hate those neighborhoods where it looks like someone just copy pasted the same houses over and over again. It looks way too sterile, and I have a feeling I'd get lost in them too, because everything looks the same. I also think pure residential areas kinda favor cars, because you can't just hop to the store down the street, or bike lane I suppose.
@countdown47253 жыл бұрын
It isn't pure residential. There are several shops spread throughout, including groceries on the edge, a health center, a restaurant, snackbar, even a little beach area

Shouldnt there be pedestrian paths next to the bicycle lane for the people walking seeing in the video? Because otherwise its not a bicycle lane anymore.. its a shared space.
@KrunchyJD7 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that some cycle paths are shared with pedestrians and some are not, how does this work, just curious.
@maaiker29777 жыл бұрын
KrunchyJD Its usually in parks or places of nature...there tends to be a small path through it. But when a cyclist shares that road they will be civil. Same goes when a pedestrian walks where there is no side walk but just a cycle path...they sometimes walk on the side of the cycle path to not bother the cyclists as much. Its about making due with what you have. When they make a small path through a park you don't want a cycle road and a side walk....especially if its not used often...a small shared road is enough.

Is it legal to ride motorized scooters on the cycle paths?
@aeiouaeiou1009 жыл бұрын
Yes
@GaryvanderMerwe9 жыл бұрын
Rick Fee Yes, some can, but it is a contentious issue: bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2013/02/23/the-moped-menace-in-the-netherlands/
@robke121219 жыл бұрын
Rick Fee There is a difference between motorized scooters and a moped, and whether they are allowed on the cycle path or not. A motorized scooter can go up to 45 km/h which is too dangerous for a cycle path. Thus its not allowed. But a moped can only go up to 25 km/h which is reasonably safe. And they are allowed on cycle paths. You can see the moped at 3:03.
@AlbertJanvanderNeut9 жыл бұрын
We have three categories of motorised scooters. First the fast ones with the big engine capacity, those are not aloud on the bicycle paths and have to use the same roads as the cars. The second one is the small capacity engine (mopeds) and those can sometimes use the cycleway especially outside the city speed is limit to 30km/h inside the city and 45km/h outside the city. Then we are having a discussion about the third slow motorised scooters. These are aloud to go on the bicycle paths riding 25km/h.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I love your videos and especially enjoy the comments on your videos. I would like to ask you if you could show how it is to be a car driver in the Netherlands. In some comments it looks like you either have to be pro bike or pro car. While I think we have a well balanced system. You can walk to the shop on the corner. You can cycle to work or school, and you can go to family in another city by car. It's this choice that frees the roads. Having just cars or even just bicycles would give problems. Kind regards, Albert-Jan

Albert-Jan van der Neut Or you could go visit friends by train and leave the car at home, if you have one.
@AlbertJanvanderNeut9 жыл бұрын
Walking Zed's Push Bike offcourse you could leave the car. My point is that having bike lanes doesn't mean you have to be anti car. It could even mean a more pleasant driving experience for car drivers when they are ready to share the road. I notice that in the communication about bicycles we hardly mention and almost never show how it is to drive a car in a bicycle friendly environment. Cyclist shouldn't take over the roads, cyclists should be added to the roads. And where possible roads should be like shown in this film. Pedestrians, cyclist skateboarders, car drivers, public transportation, they all should work together.
@busog976419 жыл бұрын
Albert-Jan van der Neut Well, to be honest with you, you sound like the perfect person to make these car / cyclist / scooter... friendly videos for others to see. You seem like you would know where these places are and how to show all in a better light. I would like to see them as well.

Walking Zed's Push Bike Sorry I didn't see your respond earlier. I'm don't have a drivers licence myself. And my ability to create videos is not that great. I am however willing to help whoever wants to create a video like this.

Albert-Jan van der Neut Maybe cycle to these junctions / roundabouts / shared streets and just record these interactions with both auto and scooter drivers and cyclist. The just add all of these clips together into one of the free video editing software packages and then post them. I am sure you would get plenty of viewers watching them to see just how well all modes get-along.

What happens when you have to see a doctor and dont have a car.
@Willemijn.Linnie6 жыл бұрын
For small things you can easily go by bike. In the Netherlands almost everyone has a personal doctor as a first contact for almost any problems. Visits are covered by health insurance that everyone has to get by law. Doctor's offices are usually close by (most neighbourhoods have them) and you can easily call to make an appointment or go when they accept people without one (usually during specific hours). If you go for problems relating to feet/legs or any other things that might hurt when riding a bike you could go on the back the bike of someone who accompanies you (in my personal experience it is a very good solution). If you go for something serious or to have a procedure done after which you cannot drive yourself home you can usually ask a friend/family member/neighbour to drive you. I am not sure if doctors do home visits. I think not, mainly because I have never heard of it happening. I personally have never heard of someone having trouble going to the doctor because they did not have a car. I hope this information helps!
