Looking forward to the "worse than shit" part video :D We passed there in the other direction by a rented 4x4, but then opted for the southern road to Dushambe because our stomachs decided so. The part from Kyrgizstan to Khorog was incredibly awesome for us.

@AmazingWorldBikeTour8 күн бұрын

@spektrumB16 күн бұрын
I hope you aren't crossing it in the winter. There are wolf packs in the region. Normally they stay away from human settlements. However in the winter, when food is harder to come by. They become more aggressive and attack villagers at night. They even dare to get close to bigger town like Khorog. In Khorog, there is a pack of street dogs. I count 10 to 12 of them. No one feeds them. They just pick up what left over from the market. However, this pack of dog does keep the wolf away in the winter in Khorog. The first time I visited Pamir in 2017, in the village Vankala. A villager told me the wolf pack took away a 6 year old boy. And last winter, in another village, the wolf attacked a mother and her daughter when they went to the toilet(toilet is outside). The girl escaped but her mother was taken away. If somehow you have to cross the Pamir in the winter, avoid camping if possible.

Phenomenal! Watching you ride this makes me think you need wider tires tackling those kinds of road conditions. At least its dry.
@AmazingWorldBikeTour17 күн бұрын
Oh, yes! Wider tires would absolutely make it a lot easier on those kind of roads. Cyclists who fly to Tajikistan to do the Pamir Highway often have setups optimized for such bad roads. Since we are in for the long run we compromised with 26x2” tires. They run good enough on asphalt and bad roads alike, but on soft and sandy sections we obviously struggle.

Tajikistan is expanding the paved road from Kalai Khumb to Khorog, Murghab and eastward to China. It will be finished at the end of 2025, if it goes according to plan. On one hand, I'm happy for the locals. They don't have to suffer from the dreadful broken bumpy road anymore. However for adventure cyclists, this is the end of something. The northern route from Dushanbe to Kalai Khumb will remain broken. And from Murghab heading north to Kyrgyzstan also. Other alternatives are to take the Bartang valley route, or the Wakhan valley. These routes can be done with a touring bike. However I'd really recommend to take a hardtail mountain bike for these.

@spektrumB how was that section when you did it this year? As you might know, our videos are behind and we did it in 2023 which was appalling, but you can compare it with the coming episode 😅 We always joked that we will not impressed when someone will tell us about how hard the M41 was in a few years 🤣

@@AmazingWorldBikeTour From Khorog to Kalai Khumb, many bulldozers and heavy machinery were widening the road. They only opened certain part of the road for traffic from 12:00 noon to 2pm. All the lorries and cars tried to rush through in that time gap. You can imagine with all the big lorries how insanely dusty the air could be. I started with a clean bike(cleaned it in Khorog). By the end me and my bike became completely yellow, covered with all the dust in the world.....:) Good that you pointed out the people living in GBAO don't call themselves Tajik, but Pamiri. 😇 Looking forward to the next episode from Kalai Khumb to Khorog? Pamir higwhay the motorway of western tourism. The bycicle is the start, next the avalaunch. You do not know what is coming, get ready.
@AmazingWorldBikeTour11 күн бұрын
Well, yes of course. Places completely untouched from any kind of tourism are more difficult to find. However, there is still a massive difference between Tajikistan 🇹🇯 and so many other continents. Will it change certainly. Will it be better? Maybe, maybe not. However, we feel that cycling is probably the least invasive kind of travel one can do.
