Noting your question of 'why are certain routes preferred?', here is my stated preference: I prefer routes that have some turns every now and then rather than an infinite straight stretch, just to get to do something other than just pedalling. In winter, I prefer roads without snow and wind but with sun. In summer, I prefer routes with wind and with shadow. As an inhabitant of Tilburg, I can confirm that not the entire highway is done: The last bit of connection between the out of the city part and the large bike paths in the city was still being constructed when I went to the dentist a month ago.

I definitely agree about the turns vs straight options, and being a UK cyclist, rather than Dutch, I also prefer a route that is neither completely flat nor with excessive climbs; the occasional slight hill may mean a bit more effort on the upwards section, but is recompensed by the thrill of the downwards! [Don't get me wrong, I *love* cycling in the Netherlands too, as the infrastructure makes the journey pleasurable - hopefully, 2022 will see a return to that as an option]

It is too bad you are using the imperial system and not the metric system to describe the measurement of the bike paths.
