The Netherlands should be the standard for all cycling infrastructure
@simpleton77 жыл бұрын
The standard should be if you are willing to let young children cycle on it - I don't think this is possible to misinterpret or water down. There is a lot of picking things that are technically Dutch but either using them in the wrong context (turbo roundabouts) or compromising on budget, reallocation of space etc and you end up losing all the benefits. www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/2013/04/the-netherlands-sets-best-example-but.html Mini Hollands in London explicitly used that branding, and many were successful. Certainly the lifestyle (and economic) benefits the Dutch receive from high levels of cycling should be a major selling point when trying to get through the overhyped 'but I need to drive' objections.

jonathan spittlehouse We do not need better bikes as they get stolen if they look to fancy. Better to have a cheap bike of 50 euro which looks crap and is stolen within a year or so, than to have a pretty bike of 2000 euro which is stolen within a week. However this is mainly in big cities, in smaller towns bikes are more expensive and better maintained as crime rates are lower. At least for bike theft that is. The biking infrastructure is also better in most cases and cyclist more well behaved. Completely have to agree that cyclists in Amsterdam are lunatics though. Even as a Dutch guy I almost got run over a couple of times.

I see. Maybe not a problem inside this station, but if you lock a bike here on the street but not using a post or a tree, the bike can simply be loaded in a truck. That's why I prefer to not only lock the bike itself, but to secure it with a lock around a post for example.

No they shouldn't, it is a wast of money to cater to mountain bike users. Better spending it on every day infrastructure. The majority of mountain bike users take the car with the bike on a rack, like you do with your guns, then ride for a few hours. Then return home. Starting to think the statistics about the number of bikes are completely wrong. Think the number is not 20 million but more around 28 to 30 million. Within my 'group' most have three bikes, within my extended family it is around 2.5 pp.

Baptiste Carron yes but not many people in NL have mountain bikes because they use bikes enough to know the potential losses from friction from the tires and how heavy they are. That would be reaching to a niche whereas the area bespoke for cargo cycles is better because they take up more room and also have larger manoeuvring circles. If this was intended as a joke be aware I did find the amusing side to the point, but it might be useful for urban planners to know if they stumble across our comments. You’ll be surprised at how active they are. Trust me.

You had better plan on living for about 200 years then. Because It's going to take a long time before the people of the entire North American continent (Canada included) figure out that trains, bicycles, legs, and feet are a much healthier, and logical way to move people, than automobiles. Can you imagine how much space it would take to park 12,500 vehicles? There's probably a mathematical way to figure it out, but I have to get out the door, and walk to work.

This is impressive. I've visited China multiple times; first in 1988. Before the more recent rise of the personal automobile, bicycles were ubiquitous (and the few drivers well trained and brilliant. Now many or most of the drivers are as bad as the rest of us....) If Guangzhou, China is not denser than Utrecht it is certainly more populous. Bicycle parking there was often huge street areas jam packed with bicycles. A bit messy, but I don't think there ever was a need for a large indoor parking facility. Double tier racks like in the Utrecht garage could've sorted the mess. I wonder, Is this beautiful bicycle garage perhaps overdoing it a bit? Also Kunming in Yunnan still stands out as very intelligently separating bicycles, vehicles and pedestrians. Cycling there was wonderful (until the smoke belching but now gone, city buses drove past.) I have not visit the Netherlands in over 40 years, but it's top of my list: to see more Rembrandts, the other museums and to ride bicycles with the Dutch. I live in Los Angeles, and after years of driving, and limiting my cycling (some local bourgeois Stalinists, masquerading as environmentalists, got cycling banned from all city parks!). And after seeing numerous incidents where bicyclists were completely ignored or unseen by car drivers, I took my old mountain bike out, pumped up the tires, and decided to see for myself. I survived. I've proved, at least to myself, that a high level of situational awareness makes cycling practical and reasonably safe. The hills flattened out a bit after I replaced my bearings, grease and bottom bracket (Want a new bike? Ride the old one for a few weeks, then do all the needed maintenance-- voila! it's like getting a brand new bicycle.) The next big hurdle is whether or not I can ride into downtown, park and lock my bicycle and after a few hours, find it still there, still working. I was also concerned about pollution, a rigorous 3-4 hour sea kayaking ocean paddle completely clears my lungs, the same on my bicycle while not as good, I'm happy to say is significantly more healthy than unhealthy. (I hadn't done very much street riding in 20 years, the diesel exhaust standards in California improved significantly about 15 years ago. This made a significant difference.

How much does it cost to store bike in there? Is it an hourly rate?
@BicycleDutch4 жыл бұрын
The first 24hrs are free. After that you pay €1.25 for every next 24hrs. There are also subscriptions for a month or a year.

I am surprised there is no mention of facilities for electric bikes. Or are they not that common in NL, unlike electric cars, charging posts are everywhere for them. I do hope that there are facilitates to remove abandoned or dumped bikes.
@ElGrandeBanana7 жыл бұрын
the racks have sensors, so they know which bikes have been in the rack for how long. They'll get removed after 14 days in most places.
@kempo_957 жыл бұрын
Electric bikes last longer with a battery than cars. You can use it at least a couple hours. So you only need to charge the bike at home.

What is the point of these stations? Main advantage of riding a bike in city is that you can lock it anywhere you go. You can use racks, trees, fences, street lamps, etc. This way you need to go to this station and walk or use public transport to get to your location.
@Julia-ez6ij7 жыл бұрын
Michal Horváth in my city you can't lock your bike everywhere the bikes just completely block the shops out of side so you need something like this but I don't know what it's like in Utrecht you can also park your bike there and then go by train to another city

How are the bikes locked?
@wimahlers3 жыл бұрын
Commonly with 2 locks. Locks like these: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioTKf6lsoNifodk Together with: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4C7damdg95rf5I Tied to a tree, lamppost, bridge, bicycle rack etc. Or: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKu0haqOjaakiaM Or: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4u3l32nhsaHoK8 In contrast with the UK, Canada or US, a U-lock is impractical, uncommon and rarely used in The Netherlands. So, there are not many of these U-locks, see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYfHnZ1rrdWZnLs U-locks are less flexible to use when compard to a chain lock. Also U-locks are less practical in The Netherlans because of the sheer amount of bicycles, the density of bicycle parking and consequently the bike rack(s) designed for this density usage. For a typical high density Dutch bicycle parking rack see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZy3pGmLarGggNU

I compare the bicycle parking at King-George square Bus-station in Brisbane : 420 bikes ; So the Utrecht station parking is 28 times the size! AND the Train-stations : the whole Brisbane train-network has just 4200 bike-parking-spaces [and none at Central-station] in a city of population 1million and a greater-area population of 3million . . . the train is viewed as useless in Brisbane - it's slow and it goes no-where. That said you can take your bike on a commuter-train outside of the peak-travel direction/hours.
@wimahlers6 жыл бұрын
Actually, if I recall the numbers correctly, there will be more than 33,000 bicycle parking spaces at the Utrecht railway station location (i.e. within a walking distance of the railway station). The 12,500 spots mentioned is just the bicyle parking garage directly under the railway station. There is a problem though. It is not enough. They are already thinking about expanding the number of bicycle parking spaces.

In the Netherlands you can also take your bike on the train. Many leisure day trips are: take the train somewhere and cycle back home. Or just start cycling and when you've had enough cycle to a train station, get out the wine, snacks and plastic cups and head home.

In the UK cyclists refuse to park anywhere further then 6 meter from their destination whether or not if it involves going all over pedestrian zones...
@inepthabit7 жыл бұрын
That doesn't work at a Dutch train station, it kind of used to be like that in Netherlands too. These bike parkings are build at every train station now because it used to be a chaos of thousands of bikes outside each train station, you weren't able to park that close by then anyway as a result, everybody understands that this is needed and better. It's also still very close to their destination, as it has direct access to the train station. And now if you do still park outside then your bike is taken away, so.
@joemalc4 жыл бұрын
I would use my bike all the time but here in the uk you can't even leave your bike for 2 minutes as it will be stolen same with motorbike/mopeds unless we start building secure parking spaces with security guards patrolling then most people will stick with there car
