I love the various things you come across: 00:00 a three segmented bus 5:08 the girl casually grabbing her backpack while the light turns green 6:34 a delivery person on a bike 7:04 a mom with a kid on a bike 7:56 a group of speed cyclists 10:29 person in a wheelchair on a specialized bike 11:53 guy on skateboard casually ignoring a red light (part of dutch culture of course) 12:54 guy on bike taking a second bike with him 13:09 of course a bakfiets as well 14:27 micro van (probably for collecting trash) Then there are also a lot of people wearing very casual clothing for riding a bike, did you spot any helmets? It's interesting to see just how many different forms of transport you come across in just 20 minutes, and to top it off there where hardly any cars. There were a few bits of road that were maybe a bit less safe for bikes, but car traffic was light so it didn't really matter

That's because they have the biggest trainhub in the Netherlands and therefore invested in public transport rather than roads. They transferred the roads back to water- and bicycle ways. Cars are just simply not too welcome and the effect is more bikes and less (noise) pollution.
@marindado5564 жыл бұрын
Yesss but when university starts a lot busses will be there and a million bicycles and even more people walking and Talking on these roads. And a lot more cars. It is the busiest (bicycle) route in Utrecht from September till july when people are going to university or to the offices next to the campus. So filming this in August during Corona is a little bit deceiving haha. Usually you have to fight for your space on the small bicycle lanes

@love-vy1ry4 жыл бұрын
That was a group of race-bikers, race bikers wear helmets & lycra clothing. Because it is sportive biking ( like in the Tour de France) which goes way faster than normal biking. They were training together as a club, like there are many in the NL. Most biking clubs ask their members to wear helmets for safety & insurance reasons. Privatly it is aloud to go race-biking without helmet in the NL, but most will wear.

We're all cyclists. I go to the supermarket on an old bike. For sport in nice weather like that race suit and race bike. You can wear a cotton shirt but it will get wet from sweat, racing clothes are just more suited and breathable.

@peterslegers61214 жыл бұрын
@N Xarigow It would save the UK a lot of money if they'd build proper cycling infrastructure. The taxes on car sales, car use and gasoline, are never enough to cover the costs of the infrastructure. So the more people drive a car, the more congestion you get, the more money you loose. The Dutch are keen on money, and they've found out that cycling infrastructure has less wear and tear, so its maintenance is much cheaper. Also, when a lot of people cycle, they stay healthier = less sick leave, more production, less costs of doctors etc..
@yorkshirehousewife7844 жыл бұрын
@N Xarigow So does the Netherlands.

There aren't that many and abandoned bikes are regularly taken away. There's a special cleanup crew for bikes that goes around popular bike parking areas and puts a tag on bikes saying they'll be removed in a certain amount of time if the tag is still on. Those bikes get repaired or salvaged and are sold as cheap second hand bikes. This has become less of an issue is the last few years as the city of Utrecht built more secure bike parking facilities and pop-up bike parking spots.

At 5:17 the tram warning light comes on while the light for crossing bicycles is green. For an approaching cyclist, would the warning light override the green light, such that the cyclist should stop? Or is it just an advance warning for when the crossing light turns red?

Should absolutely stop, a tram is approaching. People that are not directly under the green light should not cross the tram tracks. Our cameraman was on the tram tracks when the lights turned on, so that's okay.

In NL, a "normal" bike still has a retro look. And some of them are just plainly meant to be retro, like this one: www.halfords.nl/cumberland-omafiets-york-mat-zwart-dames-54cm.html. A cheap, normal looking bicycle is for instance this one: www.halfords.nl/cumberland-stadsfiets-plymouth-heren-zwart-58cm.html I know that in the US, a lot of people owning a bike have a racing bicycle, an all-terrain bike or something else special. Here in NL, everyone owns at least one bike on average, so it gotta be a not-so-special one. Fun fact: a "bakfiets" for transporting stuff (13:09) can also be retro: www.halfords.nl/vogue-elektrische-bakfiets-carry-zwart-bruin-481-watt.html

A lot of the bike ‘infrastructure’ seems to be paint?
@johanwittens77124 жыл бұрын
It's all mostly red asphalt. Only when you see white lines they're painted. But the red paths are usually red asphalt or red bricks. Also the section from 13:06 to 14:00 they're riding on the road because of works going on on the right side where the bike path is.

Till 5:28 it's a cyclepath, no cars allowed. But yeah, even with paint you can accomplish a lot. And Utrecht is currently doing a lot with directing traffic flows on a bigger scale than just the road that's being considered.

@@Cl0ckcl0ck But even after 5:28, from what I can see, its a top layer of red asphalt, not paint?

@@agaistin we have several sorts.. slower ones (25 km/h) are allowed on bicycle tracks, and faster ones 45 km/h have to use the road for cars. (Teenagers often ignore these rules)

it's unfortunate to see the arrogance of some motorist ignoring the cycle priority lane on 7.41 minutes riding way to fast and cutting you of. It is the same here in Zoetermeer in the erea where i live. They ingnore the 30 kmh limitation and act like they are in charge.
