Bicycling Tucson/Oro Valley the Canada del Oro Trail (Jan 23, 2022)

For our last three winter getaways, we have traveled to Tucson Arizona. We love the Tucson area for its great bike paths (The Loop and others) and hiking in the surrounding mountains. We have always stayed in Oro Valley which is just north of Tucson. I thought I would present a couple of the extensions of The Loop we did while riding this year. The full loop will have to wait until another year for us to do the full 54 mile loop ride.
From Oro Valley, there is the Canada del Oro trail that takes you down the wash to the Santa Cruz River, which is where we turned around and headed back to Oro Valley. You can connect to The Loop or follow the Santa Cruz River toward Marana and make a loop back to Oro Valley by riding up toward Dove Mountain and then heading east on Tangerine. I added a few extra miles by riding from our rental to the beginning of the Canada del Oro trail.

Great video. I ride frequently in that area, it’s my favorite area because of the mountains. Cooler even in summer because of so many trees and the golf course. In the summer ride early in the morning or later in the afternoon. If it’s over 100 degrees then I take plenty of water to wet my hair down. Great narration also.

It is definitely our favorite trail in the area, especially since we stay in Oro Valley. I am sure it is a bit brutal riding in the summer there. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.

Wow! That looks so fun. Any suggestions on a VRBO that is close to that trail? Which one did you use? I need dog-friendly.

It is a lot of fun. We stayed up in the north end of Oro Valley about 3 miles away from the north end of the trail, and used Vacasa to get our rental (our unit did not allow dogs, but Tucson rentals seem to be pretty dog friendly). Have a good time in Tucson and thanks for watching.

This is why I start hikes and rides at the lowest part and go uphill. Then after I get tired it's downhill back to the start. I don't know how your bike frame is configured, but if possible a front derailleur would help on hills. I have a similar problem. I picked up an old 10 speed with 40/50 chain rings and a 14-28 rear cluster, so I don't have enough gears for up or downhill. I'd like to go visit the family down south in Sahuarita and make a trip to the Loop. You make it look really tempting.

Glad the video is tempting you to ride the loop, it is a gem of a trail system. I wish more cities would use it as a model. I am still tempted to get a smaller front ring, but do not want a front derailleur as I think it would not survive well on a folding bike. Thanks for watching!

Your loco bike shop can change the gearing on the bikes to help make your ride better

I have been thinking about replacing the front ring with one that has a few less teeth. The rear freewheel is a 7 speed 11/34 and I have not seen one with more teeth. The trade off would be slower top end speed.
