Graeme many thanks. You are without doubt the best bridge teacher on the net. The next time I’m down under I’ll buy you a couple of tinnies.

Hmm. 5 of a minor needs more strength, around 30 points. 3NT won't make on minimum strength if there is a four-four fit. There will be a weakness in another suit, and the 8-card fit won't produce an extra trick, as it would if it were 5-3. A lot of ink has been spilled on how many points 3NT requires. the 4-3-2-1 count is not as accurate as the Cowan count. 3NT will have. a good play with 37 Cowans or more. The Cowan count is 5 for Ace, 4 for King, 3 for Queen, 2 for Jack, and 1 for 10. Minimum opener is 17-20 and a strong no-trump is 21-24.
