As a retired engineer who assisted in designing generators, I know most home generators do not work during a power outage because the homeowners do not test them out monthly. V2L from an EV makes sense because it is much more reliable. It was also easier to refuel from local charging stations during Hurricane Milton in Florida, where natural gas was shut off, and local gas stations could not supply fuel for generators until five days after the storm.

Bidirectional Charging is another reason that EVs using and integrating into the Power Grid will save $trillions. Utilities can offer EV owners incentives to allow bidirectional charging at peak use hours.

The sooner we electrify, the better. Yes to the mandate, no to tariffs. Cheap Chinese cars everywhere. Would it be disruptive? A bit. Is it necessary? Yes. Countries need to stop _saying_ they are going to do something about climate change and start making the changes that are available and economical now!

Interesting question you raised: why do some EV makers have already built in bidirectional charging but are not enabling it? Fear of cannibalisation of their home battery sales?
@wlhgmk2 сағат бұрын
The other innovation that would make a huge difference is a standard package to convert your Leaf battery into a home battery. I understand that once you use a Leaf battery more gently as in a house, in contrast to using it in a car, it's rate of degradation decreases. One could even leave the battery in the car and park it in a purpose built lean-to by the house or in one bay of your garage. By the way, here where I live, Leafs are a favorite car and in terms of it's convenience and dash board display, I wouldn't trade it for a Tesla.

Slight correction, in USA, GM has been selling V2H solution through GM Energy with most 2024 and all 2025 GM EVs supporting bi-directional power since May. I'm now getting a quote using the new 2025 Cadillac LYRIQ. Kia and Volvo have made claims their new EV models will offer bi-directional V2H solutions but so far no solution has been offered.

There is no reason they need to be so expensive. It makes it uneconomical. They should cost no more than a standard solar PV inverter. ($1000-$2000) since the function is basically the same.

I am still not driving an electric vehicle. The Australian government in it’s wisdom and tax grabbing have decided to tax residents for the solar power they generate from their homes. @rp96742 сағат бұрын
It still doesn't make Financial sense, the logistics have not changed. Your EV battery is not always home, the hardware and connection is very expensive, the utility decides pricing. Better to put that money toward a dedicated battery and/or solar. I prefer off grid so the utility can't screw you with pricing whenever they feel like it
@MattThomas-p2x5 сағат бұрын
For widespread V2G adoption, there will need to be lots of L2 chargers installed so that people can slow charge at work. Spend hours taking in cheap power from solar and wind at 3-11Kw to store the energy that would otherwise be thrown away through curtailment. Just not 1 or 2 L2 chargers in a parking lot, but 25% of the spaces or more. This will be a lot easier if/when inductive charging becomes mainstream. Just park and charge.

Here where I live some cars could be over 40 years old. Typically average age of cars is 13-15 years. My car is already 13 years old. The goal is to keep that car at least to 2032. Still cars (EVs) must last at least 25 to 30 years so I do not believe that current EV batteries will last over car lifetime if the lifetime for EV is set to that.
@davidlloyd15267 сағат бұрын
No one I know has a car over 10 years old. The one I had when I was younger was 15 years old had electrical faults and the rubber pipes all degraded. It was worthless when I scrapped it. And if you say "replace the parts", then I'll say "replace your battery"
@iSot807 сағат бұрын
@@davidlloyd1526 Sam's opinion is still wrong that current batteries will last longer than car itself, because cars lifetime could be between 15-40 years. These are current cars which fuel engines will last a long time. We do not expect anything less from EVs lifetime.

CHAdeMO is the only charging protocol in the world with the bidirectional charging (V2G) functionality enabled. Every EV should have been build with it, But indeed some manufactors were reluctant to think about the future, like Tesla. Tesla should have taken the lead with CHAdeMO. That would have given the EV world a head start. But no, everything for Elons ego and profit.

why do we want to power our house with an EV. It's better to get a permanent battery on the garage wall. Otherwise, you don't need the EV in the first place. This is a stupid argument. We don't have the right battery chemistry for our home electrical use yet. We need to work on transportation first with lithium batteries. Na or Fe battery chemistry is more appropriate for a sedentary power source.
