Fantastic job as always Dave. Lovely radio, the knobs looks amazing, I don't think you need to change them. Also, the imperfection made the back looks so original. Well done. I have two comment on the shellac "you know I love it" : 1- shellac is a great filler and the way you applied it considered a filler. I would suggest you apply it on bare wood "it will give more wood grain depth". The shellac has to be light, if I remember correctly, dilute 1 part of shellac to 10 parts of spirit. You can use brush or spray gun to apply it. Apply as much coats as needed till the wood grain is totally filled. Wait 1hr every 3 coats and light sand with 0000 steel wool. 2- you can add the stan to the shellac as long as it's alcohol based. In saying that, the radio finish looks amazing 🤩
@DavidTipton101Ай бұрын
Thank you Khaled. I appreciate the comments and the shellac tips. I should try a few more coats as you suggest 👍🙂

The schematic for your Sony says it uses a 1-446-514-00 transformer for the AEP, SCN version of the SONY PS434. You may be able to get one somewhere or use the schematic to work out what is needed. It would be difficult to find a suitable substitute on the shelf I imagine. Google SONY PS434 to find the schematic.

David, another beautiful radio restoration, you have definitely found your niche! While you were fine sanding the cabinet final coat, it brought back some 1980's - 1990's memories from when PC boards were designed on a drafting table. As engineers, we would check the draftsman's artwork by overlaying it with a sheet of frosted clear mylar, then using colored pencils, we would trace out each circuit board trace against the schematic. This mylar was chemically etched on one side, giving the pencil a surface to write on. Also, we discovered the frosted side of the mylar also acted like 10,000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. I was thinking, the mylar would be useful if you were trying to achieve a topcoat mirror finish. I don't know if this product is still available, this was in the US, and we bought it in 0.9 meter width rolls. Anyway, I thought that tip may be useful to your "Bag of tricks". Keep up the good work!
@DavidTipton101Ай бұрын
Hello Bill, thank you. It was different back then and it's not so long ago either. I don't have any frosted mylar, it would be interesting to try. I expect the cutting compounds I use would do much the same. Thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind 👍🙂

Wow ! Fantastic resto job again Dave, I really enjoyed watching you install and test Manuel's latest rectifier board, i was wondering how it would fair and my God, both of you didn't disappoint. The knurling the new nuts on the lathe was also soooo satisfying (might of drooled a bit watching that part...). I think you are correct about the front plastic grille's colour, any whiter than that would have clashed and i think the knob's colour are quite close enough. In fact as it stands now, i'm pretty sure the radio looks much nicer than the one on display over at the little museum. It now looks like it came right out of factory and it sounds amazing, i'm also surprised how well it tunes on your bench. It must look so good on the shelf amongst you other master pieces :-). Thanks for sharing your work as always my friend, well done. Be well, talk later.

Hi Raymond. Manuel's board worked very well, he is a clever fella. I have come to terms with the colour of the knobs, they look fine. I haven't done much knurling since I left school, I had to modify the knurling tool to fit my small lathe so I should get a bit more use from it now. I ran that radio for a week, it sounded so good, it sounded like a much bigger radio. Thanks Raymond, take care 👍🙂

Another great video. A tip for you and others. Try using some Eucalyptus oil when trying to remove the sticky from where stick and electrical tapes that have been used. It will take a couple of goes on old tsape but it works like a dream and I have never damaged the original surface when using it. This is a tip from "The Minister of War" many years ago.
