I got one of these from a second hand shop for a fiver, I love it. MY daughter does too, so I found one on eBay for her. It has all the original packaging, looks unused, but does not turn on when plugged in. I dont have the tools and equipment to do this kind of repair in this vid though. Im hoping for a replacement. On another sort of related story- Years ago I worked in a TV shop for a while, the flat screens were fairly new then. An old aged pensioner lady came in and said to me and a colleague “Ive got an old Bush”. We had to stifle our smirks and I remember thinking -Its no surprise there love, you are no spring chicken.

To fix an antenna that’s been broken like that, I’d use a pair of needle nose and pull it up. Then I’d flatten the end and roll it over once to cover the sharp edge. Flattening it prevents it from going all the way back in and gives you something to grab to pull it up.

Those tactile switches are very sensitive to contamination with flux etc. fumes, which is why they can fail prematurely and often feel "soggy". Just a random design thought for pushing repairability. Imagine making something that you know could break, because all things do, even just a battery replacement. But you design it in such a way that when it is opened, it intentionally changes how it looks, making the device even more appealing looking. Maybe it has something to do with the screws, or how a panel comes off. I love the idea, just don't think any company would ever do that. Am enjoying the vid so far Steve! Keep it up

We have HD Radio, but digital radio overall works a bit better in England than in the US. The entire UK is the size of Michigan, including Michigan's portion of the Great Lakes. England is a little over half of the size of the UK. Still with me? 56 million people live in England alone. Michigan is a typical state, a little bit larger and more populous than average, with 10 million people. England is half the size of Michigan with nearly six times the population. The population density in England is absurdly high compared the the US. Europe is similar. DAB works great where it exists, and everywhere you go you're likely to encounter a large number of stations. In the US in rural areas, you're lucky to have one or two analog country stations, let alone a full suite of digital choices. HD Radio isn't bad. In Detroit there is quite a bit of HD Radio variety, but not much equipment to receive these signals outside of your car. I happen to listen to HD Radio at home all the time.

When soldering in things like that microswitch, since there's nothing but mask underneath, couldn't you dab a drop of CA glue on the bottom side of the switch, line it up, and then tack the solder joints in after the glue sets? Seems like it would be easier than trying to handle the alignment and soldering simultaneously.

Oh! We have DAB+ now. DAB+ uses a more efficient audio codec called AAC+ (Advanced Audio Coding), while DAB relies on an older codec called MP2 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer II). This allows DAB+ to offer better sound quality at lower bitrates, meaning broadcasters can fit more stations into the same amount of spectrum without sacrificing sound quality.
