Speed limits on roundabouts also help a lot. Especially if they use highway roads, the cars on the roundabout are so fast that cars standing at the junction don't have a chance to enter. Limiting speed in the roundabout to 50 kph solves this nicely.

@@_chosen_one_anakin_skywalker If you're on vanilla, just use roads with low speeds (like the regular one-ways) instead of highways. The wide roads have a slightly higher speed, so everything still works out fine. You need a mod to _change_ the speed limit, but there still _is_ a speed limit in vanilla.

another idea is to use a bridge, so those who want to go straight on, don't have to stop at all. You surely already do this for highways, but you could use a similar way inside your city, with a tiny bridge and separate lanes making sort of a mini clover leave junction, which work great. Great video though with a deep dive into several junctions and how they perform

@@thany3 In my country, roundabouts are rarely done as well. In my ~80k city there is only one roundabout, but looking at the traffic, road layout and available space - there should be another 10 roundabouts to make the flow smoother. In other, bigger cities they prefer to put massive, 4-6 lanes near-junction roads and traffic lights with green light phases so short that only 10-15 cars can go through. If there are trams on the same road, it is even worse than that.
@drakedbz
@drakedbz 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kitusiek001 I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. Where I lived, the entire area was one big grid for the major roads (the neighborhoods were more organic), and there were no roundabouts anywhere. All of the major roads had timed traffic lights, and the traffic wasn't all that bad. Roundabouts are only really necessary when there is a major chokepoint, but if there are multiple ways to get to the same place, traffic lights are fine.

@@thany3 You´re right (so much so that the only example I can think of is in Stockholm), but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good idea, even if it's uncommon, and vice versa. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest fan of cloverleaves either, but there might be instances where it could be useful. Also, any road can be used as a motorway, even if it's not classified as a "motorway road" in-game, as long as it has all the properties of a motorway (i.e. no zoning, no at-level pedestrian crossings, no at-level right turns (left turns in RHT), no traffic lights, high speed limits, etc).

Something else you could do verging on an actual interchange is use the slip lanes to go right so the only actual traffic going through is turning left. Doing lane math you''d be 3+3, then right slips off and on, 2+2, bypass for straight overs (one set over, one set underground), 1+1 at the intersection and, if large enough area, you could roundabout that with a simple 1 lane one-way. Vanilla fix and may even get away without putting in a traffic light or stop sign.

Nicely done examples. :) A couple of other good ones: - Divergent Diamond Interchange - I don't know the name, but there's one that's basically the opposite of the last example you showed. In this one, the central intersection is only used by cars going straight, and the lights just alternate between the two directions. There are then 2-way diagonal roads at all four corners. The cars turning left have a dedicated lane and turn left across a small intersection onto the diagonal road before reaching the central intersection. The cars turning right do the same. This works really well, but the downside is it uses a lot of land.

I used to play it. But the unrealistic lane switching on the highways caused me so much trouble and work that I lost interest completely. Now if that was a realistic problem, like in real life, I would have like the challenge but you only spend hours on what is basically a fault in the game its self. People don't stand in a 10 mile traffic jam all in the middle lane while they are on a 5 lane highway.. That's no funn at all. Maybe one day they manage to fix that problem and I'll come back. Its a great game if you can look away from the lane switching problem..

When I went to college a few cities over, years ago, there was an intersection not far from the train station and of course one of the connecting roads immediately followed by a railway crossing. Every morning I walked from station to college, the traffic was jammed and people (logistical masterminds as they are) blocking that intersection and the railway crossing, delaying the train network as well. All of it can be avoided if folks put in a little more awareness and simply wait _before_ the intersection and the crossing, until the road ahead is cleared. Some notes for people trying for a drivers license: *NEVER* stop, stand still, park or overtake on: 1) Intersections 2) Railway crossings 3) Bridges It's how most of traffic accidents happen, because impatience and awareness don't go well together.

@@Sarteth it is better to use ingame options over mods honestly, because if you need a mod for a game to work isn't it a mechanical issue the game should have solutions to on their own. As for Pr, It is a bit of work but can you detatch the mono rail from the road with a monorail only section? A bypass road to divert traffic away from the section in question might work too. You should have atleast 2 ways in and out of every area for cars not counting walk paths as well as public transport. The less need for the cars to be there the better and if there is need give them secondary options to avoid massive overload.
@Jack-yv3po
@Jack-yv3po 4 жыл бұрын
@@Solus749 But the game doesn't have solution to a lot of problems on it's own - Vanilla traffic lights are pretty bad, vanilla roundabouts just don't work like a real roundabout should. There are many road choices people would like but don't exist. Without mods traffic isn't an issue because vehicles just delete themselves. A bypass road is only really good if you use mods to force people to use the bypass or edit speed limits to provide incentive for the AI to use it.

A suggestion that i see a lot in my city and also use a lot in the cities i build is never allowing cars to turn left in the junction. If the surroundings is something of a grid, you can make them go straight and turn right twice on the next block, then put a give way sign or timed traffic lights depending on the flow, but in the critical junction you can make it only 2 steps on the lights (well, 3 because i like to have a pedestrian exclusive seconds, because if you don't do this they YOLO and decrease the flow crossing between the cars). It's also very realistic.

Few ideas: 1. Roundabouts vs. traffic islands (there are videos on KZbin that explain the difference but would be cool to see it in Cities Skylines context). 2. Two-highway roundabout with bypasses (ie two highways meet at a crossroads, you add a roundabout at ground level, a flyover for one of the highways and a tunnel for the other so everyone has a straight-through option). 3. Teaville suggestion: Make a golf course somehow?? You'd need to fake the fairways/greens/bunkers somehow but with trees lining the fairways and park paths winding through, I think it could look pretty convincing and make an empty space look really interesting.

Also if you're doing a whole series of deep dive videos, you could do a whole video about speed limits and how they affect the cars' routing decisions, how they affect ease of access for traffic joining roundabouts, who does and doesn't take a bypass etc. How to improve roundabout traffic flow, how to encourage more cars to take the highway around your city instead of smaller roads through the middle, that kinda thing.

Knowledge is what I am seeking, not entertainment. But of course presentation is important. Your's matches my expectations very well (unlike a couple of other KZbinr's) Thanks I am newish to C:S. The thing I have most trouble with is: Network builds, especially slopes and curves. That trick of adding, then removing, a junction to get another node was a true revelation. I use MoveIt, Fine Road Tool and Fine Road Anarchy, or I should say I fiddle around with. An in depth covering building believable transportation networks would really assist me. I pick up clues from your videos in passing (like the fact you can't have 45 degree angles in metro), but an in depth coverage would be great. Keep up the good work.

Back when I played the game, I used slip lanes/exits to avoid 4-way and even some 3-way intersections. For context, I used the American roads. So when approaching an intersection, and you want to turn right, you would have a slip lane that would merge into the cross road on the right. If you wanted to go straight, you would just go straight through, if you wanted to turn left, there would be a slip lane with an underpass/overpass. Note that these were for main roads, not for smaller neighborhood roads and such. Doing it this way, my main roads never had any intersections with cars crossing or having to stop anywhere. I could have tons of traffic using a 2-lane road all through my city, and they never backed up.

Fantastic idea. I'd love to see the do's and don'ts of oval-abouts because I've made some which worked a treat and others which just ended up concentrating the traffic and basically becoming the weak point of the traffic in the area. Also, you mention interchanges, I'd love to see some ideas on non highway interchanges as sometimes you just have that much traffic or one of those complicated setups where ideally you want say six roads able to swap traffic freely but there's too much going on for one poor roundabout.

A common issue i noticed when you join a two-lane road into a 3 lane roundabout is, that by the game defaults the left lane entering is used by traffic going to the left and the middle lane of the roundabout. Just using the lane connector and dedicating the left lane to the left lane and let the traffic going to the middle and the right roundabout-lane share the right entering-lane usally improves performance because it combines the two roundabout-lanes with the least cross-traffic while entering instead of combining the lanes with the most.

@ 1:52 At two lane intersections the left turning traffic should get the dedicated turning lane because it's left turning traffic that has to wait for opposing traffic to clear, right turns can be done without conflict from oncoming traffic. The game (TM:PE) does it wrong and gives the dedicated turning lane to the right lane instead.

Awesome video. I've seen requests for the times traffic light tutorial and I second this. It'd also be great to have a guide on city layout - how to balance RICO zoning. I really struggle with this is the early game most of all.

At the start when you had 2 plus one, you can arrange it better by having the lane that is crossing traffic (left) separate from the clear lanes (right and straight on). If you watch back you will see that right lane was clear too much of the time, and you had the people going straight on waiting for people to cross traffic left. It's a waste of good tarmac. Make the right lane have straight on. The right lane should move fast. Then 3 lanes almost becomes unnecessary.

1:37 Actually you also have 3+1 asymmetric road (same tab as 2+1), it may be more beneficial than 3+2 as it has same footprint as 2+1 and each lane would have it's own destination lane (no manual lane managment is needed). I don't know if it's from DLC or Network Extensions.

That whole tab is Network Extensions. The DLC 2+1 is with the vanilla small roads.

Roundabouts: I've found that the number of joining and lanes on the roundabout should equal the number of exits -1 ie. Crossroads = 3 join 3 lanes on the roundabout and always use only one exit lane. Biggest roundabout I had was 7 exits so six lane roundabout and young lanes. Industry should always go on the first exit from the highway. Then give them a left / right turn shortcut from the center of the island back to the highway. And biffa that section down to correct mathematics. The reverse about seems to work counter intuitively. Using symmetrical road on the roundabout with reverse traffic single lane in the center. Normal rules for going around the correct direction yield for reverse direction.

TM:PE is such an awesome must have mod to help with traffic issues make dedicated lanes for emergency vehicles only or dedicated lanes for commercial vehicles only so that goods arrive on time You should use a roundabout with side angle mergers so traffic having to cross can use the roundabout while other traffic can easy merge the other way without needing to use the roundabout also when using TM:PE, consider utilizing all lanes so all cars don't bunch up into one single lane

Just as you said in the end, a junction that busy needs an intersection, best way in my opinion there would be to have the traffic going straight on not interfere with the intersection very much, for example have the road going from left to right tunnel beneath or bridge across the road going from top to bottom and force those that wish to turn into an elevated roundabout. A stack or turbine interchange would work too. The main part simply is: Stop traffic form crossing over each other, that is why there tends to be a seperate turning lane in real life for those that wish to turn left, because they cross over the path for the oncoming traffic going straight on. How did you came up with the idea for this tutorial series btw? A suggestion from the comments, just on your own or were you annoyed be people constantly making either the same mistakes over and over again or asking you the very same question over and over again?

Instead of doing dedicated turning lanes for all directions I like to only do them for left turns. That can fit in a two lane road and in three lane roads I do a dedicated left, dedicated straight and one that goes both straight on and right. This performs just a bit worse but makes the junction look way more realistic.

As a rule I don’t use 4 way crossings. I rather use T crossings. If I need to use a 4 way I always make it a roundabout. If there are roundabouts on either side of the T I force a right turn on the leg of the T

The bypass to go straight is not very common in The Netherlands, what you would normally see here is a dedicated lane ( in the form of a bypass without traffic lights) for turning and make the straight lanes dedicated as well. Controlled with traffic lights it is a much more realistic approach. You would then still have an intersection, but traffic is manageable.

Really helpful tips, got traffic flowing quite better now. Looking forward to T-junctions and other variants as well. Sometimes when you indicate something with the cursor it's hard to find where it is. A comment about in which area to look for it would be helpful.

Ive been using a lot of small roundabouts made with the highway ramp road. Its nice because its only one lane so its easy enough for people to get on and off the roundabout, no messing with turn lanes and you also cant build on it by accident.

Another thing you can do(we use this in America a lot) is at the 2 or 4 lane junctions, add a separate turn lane like an offramp sort of that has a yield/give way sign that allows right turning traffic to basically bypass the junction.
@vernondickinson1201
@vernondickinson1201 2 жыл бұрын
If you are going to do that, you're better to reduce the junction from a 3+2 to a 2+2 and rstrict the juntions to no right turn. If you don't, then you're likely to have traffic using bouth routes during busy periods and tripping over one another. Force them to use the slip roads for the right turns. Remember to apply lane mathematics when using this type of filter lane.

I think your problem with smaller asymmetrical roads is you have the dedicated turning backwards. In right hand driving, the left turn is dedicated and the right lane is straight/right turn.
