Tom Hanks is just a great actor that chooses great movies to be in. Please check out A League of Their Own. It stars him, Geena Davis, Madonna, Jon Lovett. Great movie based on women's professional baseball league during WWII. Good history, has comedy, and a great cast. I think you will both enjoy it.

Saw this in the theater, I had just graduated High School. It’s hard to explain, but at no point did we think about the relationship being inappropriate. It’s a fantasy movie, not a historical drama. Things change, nowadays a lot of movies that were hugely popular wouldn’t be made. But these types of things never affected us in a way that shaped who we were. The message was, be young at heart, and that’s what we took from it.

This was directed by Penny Marshall. At the time, there were very few female directors in Hollywood. She also directed Tom Hanks in 'A League of Their Own'. You may know her as "Laverne" from 'Laverne and Shirley'. She was also married for a while to Rob Reiner, director of 'This is Spinal Tap', 'Stand By Me', 'The Princess Bride', 'When Harry Met Sally', 'Misery', 'A Few Good Men'... Now that I think about it, Penny Marshall, Rob Reiner and Tom Hanks all had roots as actors in television sit-coms (Laverne and Shirley, All in the Family and Bosom Buddies)

23:15 Yes, those were definitely real toys in the late 80s. They were called Pogo Balls, and they were pretty fun. They came in several color combinations, and you could deflate the ball portion (which was kinda peanut shaped) and remove it from the hard plastic deck, then you could swap colors with your friends and air them back up with a pump just like a basketball.

This is just one of those movies where everything came together. Creative script, great direction and a killer cast. All of these things were excellent but Tom Hanks really brought it to life. It was also a coming of age for her as well. She always ended up with guys who didn’t respect her and he showed her what liking someone for themselves and not what they can get out of it. Keep it in mind. She did not know how old he really was. Not sleeping with her that first night woke her up to the possibility that someone was interested for more than just her body. She discovered the joy of just having fun. She started to see what life could be. In the end he missed his family and she I hope found enough confidence to quit letting guys who didn’t respect her talk her into things she really want to do. Tom Hanks is the best Actor to come along in the last 20 years. Now you know he was really good at comedy too

The first song that Josh and the boss do on the piano is called "Heart and Soul". It's a pretty standard song for people to learn on the piano (especially as a duet) so, it's not surprising that you'd heard it before. It was originally composed by Hoagy Carmichael and it, actually, does have lyrics! There are a lot of people who have done covers of it but, the most popular version was done by The Cleftones, who made an R&B version of it. It'd be a great one for your music channel!! 😊 P.S. The little corn on the cobs are called "baby corn". 😉

Funny story, my husband was a flight steward aboard Air Force One for many years; and while on crew rest in Switzerland at a ski resort no less, Elizabeth Perkins noticed my husband was American and proceeded to tell him all about the divorce she was going through. He was just just a guy trying to eat his lunch and look at the view! It was 1988, the year this movie came out. Have a great weekend!

Too bad he didn't appreciate the opportunity to have, in that beautiful place, a surprisingly meaningful moment with a stranger that is also and iconic (as this movie is, and the remake of Miracle on 34th St ) actress and have and give her the kindness and human connection she obviously was needing. That's would have been more beautiful and precious than only appreciating the beautiful place.

Tom Hanks in the 80's was COMEDY! He first got famous on the TV show "Bosom Buddies," as a guy, with his best friend, who dressed in drag in order to live in a women's only apartment building. It was hilarious! "The Money Pit," "Bachelor Party," "Dragnet," "Splash," "The 'Burbs," "Turner & Hooch," "Joe Versus the Volcano," and "Volunteers" were peak Hanks comedies! I'm old enough to remember when he started doing dramas and people were like "WTF?" Until we saw how awesome he really was in everything!

What an all-star cast! Tom Hanks, Jared Rushton (Honey, I Shrunk The Kids), Elizabeth Perkins, Jon Lovitz (SNL), John Heard (Home Alone 1 & 2), Kevin Meaney (Comedian; RIP) and Robert Loggia. Miss Patterson, Josh Baskin's secretary, is played by Debra Jo Rupp, who later played Kitty Forman on "That '70s Show". The toy store featured in the movie is F.A.O. Schwarz and that giant piano keyboard is very real. I went to Chicago in 1998 for my senior high school trip. There was an FAO Schwarz downtown and yes, they did still have the giant keyboard inside. I was able to walk on top of the keys. Talk about a full circle moment. 🤩🥰

One thing that newer audiences don't know was that Tom Hanks started out in comedic roles. The thing that put him on the map was an Early 80s sitcom called Bosom Buddies. His first big movie was Splash, with Daryl Hannah and John Candy. One of my favorite movies of all time is Joe vs the Volcano! But he really didn't start doing serious roles until the 90s. But there was The Man with One Red Shoe, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit, Volunteers, and Dragnet! Maybe just to give you a heads up.

It's funny to me that younger viewers only know Tom Hanks as a serious actor. That wasn't where he started! Although he had trained in Shakespeare, he was first well known for a sitcom, "Bosom Buddies", and then a string of lighthearted comedies like Big. It wasn't until later, in the 90's, that he began to pick up dramatic roles and his career changed. It's been very interesting watching how it's developed, and his dramatic talents come to the forefront. But this is the Tom Hanks everyone knew in the 80's - the eternally nice, sweet-natured guy who could never, ever be threatening to anyone.

I was about the same age as the leading lady and Tom Hanks when this movie came out. I was working in NYC in the corporate world. I had the big hair, wore those outfits, etc. The thing to understand is that at that time, during the Reagan years, everything was about business, making money, climbing the ladder of success, competition. A lot of cocaine was around that kept, people working late, partying hearty, then going to work again. I wasn’t into that, but a lot of people were. And then, this movie came out, and it was a real antidote to all that. It was a HUGE hit, because besides being well done, the message really hit home. It’ll always hold a special place in my heart. And I cry at the ending every time.

Those bouncy toys were branded as "Pogo Balls," and they were pretty popular for a few years in the late '80s/early '90s before almost disappearing overnight. If I recall, it was mostly due to kids getting injured from misusing them and consumer product groups warning parents about them being dangerous. For kids though, they were fun as hell.

You guys should consider watching a movie called "That Thing You Do!" Because it features both Tom Hanks (who wrote and directed it) and Liv Tyler (who I know Amber really likes from LOTR). It's the story of a band of young guys who forms in the Midwest in the wake of the British Invasion (Beatles, implictedly) who have a surprise hit single and the excitement and conflicts brought about by unexpected success. Interestingly, the actors learned how to play their various musical instruments so they could perform the music during live concert scenes. I'm certain you would both like it. The music is good, the characters are well portrayed. It's a very wholesome movie in its way since it is set in the early 60s. So it's based on a (fictional) musical group, it has Tom Hanks and Liv Tyler and even your kids could enjoy it because it's not full of bad language or sexual situations.
