This began as a play, and the play only has three characters: Miss Daisy, Hoke, and Boolie. I had the very good fortune of seeing no less than James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury, ten years ago, on stage, here in Australia.

My favorite movie about friends...and then you learn about the book and realize one friendship was very different. 😂. I loved that movie and this one. People call it a "Uncle Tom" movie when it first came out. Rather than understanding that there were a lot of real relationships folks had between the races (and they had to "look" a certain way, act a certain way, to get business if you were white and still Jewish or Irish or Italian...anything that could hurt you.

I always, ALWAYS cry at the nursing home scene. I cried in the theatre when I saw this the first time and I continue to do so now whenever I watch this brilliant movie. Jessica Tandy was a wonder and worthy of the Oscar win. Morgan Freeman was worthy as well but it was a tough year for Best Actor nominees. Robin Williams for "Dead Poets Society", Tom Cruise for "Born on the Fourth of July" and Daniel Day-Lewis (who won for "My Left Foot"). For me, I would have given it to Robin Williams or Morgan Freeman.

Every time I watch this movie I'm reminded how great it is. Morgan Freeman's character is just utterly charming while Jessica Tandy's character starts off with a prickly exterior but we come to learn she has a very kind heart. This is quite a departure for Dan Aykroyd, but he played his part beautifully and added a lot to our view of the relationship between Hoke and Miss Daisy.

TBH. In this day and age Rain Man doesn't really stand up in the way it once did. I liked the movie, I really did, but it's not an accurate depiction of someone who has that type of disorder. 100% I'll say it was good at the time so don't feel the need to rip me one for saying it. I'm not saying it's terrible or anything but on rewatch and given we know far more about these conditions, my opinion has lessened on it.

My father had Guillian-Barre’. They called it French polio and he was paralyzed from the waist down for a long time. He had physical therapy, and they taught him how to walk and relearn all those functions again and he thought he could drive. My parents home at the time was on a steep steep driveway that then flattened out just a smidge, and then went down a deep part of the backyard, and then into ravine, my daddy accidentally hit the gas when he should’ve hit The and his car went sailing down into that ravine. It was the airbags that saved his life but anyway, brake. the car ended up being down in that ravine for four months while the insurance company decided how they were going to deal with it and they determined that it had to be towed out. to get it out two or three tow trucks or required and it turned out to be a neighborhood event where everybody brought their coolers full of beer, and they sat around watching this, prior to that all the kids played Rambo in and around the car with paint guns. Probably a bit more of a comment than you want but I thought you might get a chuckle out of it.😢😢😢😢

Two such tremendous talents playing the lead roles in this movie. Both are so good by themselves, but together they're just golden. If you're interested in seeing more of Jessica Tandy, I highly recommend that you watch 'Fried Green Tomatoes.' It stars Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates, whom I'm sure you remember from 'Misery.' (I mean, who could forget, right?) Jessica Tandy won the Oscar for this movie, Kathy Bates won the next year for 'Misery,' then they got together and did 'Fried Green Tomatoes,' with two younger actors who were up and coming at the time: Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary Louise Parker. The end result is just magical. 'Fried Green Tomatoes' is similar to 'Driving Miss Daisy' in that it takes place in the South and it's a story about friendship, in this case primarily female friendship. 'Steel Magnolias' is probably also a fair comparison. So anyway, that's my pitch for 'Fried Green Tomatoes'. It's one of my favorite movies, and I think you'd really like it. 😊

Unfortunately, younger generations just view this movie negatively through a racial lense. They miss the essential truth of how terrible and lonely it can be to age, and how it can make you act out badly when you are trying to avoid your fate because you value your independence so much and fear the end, and how a new friendship, however unlikely, can be lifesaving.

I was the Crew Chief for the original play in New York in 1986-1988. It was only a three character, 75 minute play, with an audience of 80 seats. Morgan Freeman was Hoke from the very beginning. Dana Ivey played Miss Daisy and I forgot who the original Boulie was. We sold out every night. The reviews went through the roof. Then one night Angela Lansbury showed up in the audience, and then Steven Spielberg. Soon we had huge stars in the audience every night. About two years later it became this film and won Best Picture and three other Oscars. So that tiny little play became this pleasing blockbuster. I worked with and watched Morgan from the wings for 15 weeks before I moved on to another show. What an honor it was. It still has the same affect one me after all these years.Tissues. Jessica Tandy won the Oscar for Best Leading Actress for this movie. She was an old school, beautiful movie star (married for over 50 years, till her death, to movie star Hume Cronyn). I see that someone suggested watching her movie Fried Green Tomatoes for which she was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar (A MUST WATCH). It's a fun movie with an old woman (Tandy) telling stories about her and her good friend and what they got up to when they were girls/young women. Another worthy, endearing flick in which you can see her & her husband in acting roles as a married couple in Cocoon (directed by Ron Howard). I haven't seen it in a long time, but I know in the day, I watched it more than once. It's a sweet movie about a bunch of elderly couples (other famous movie stars in their day) mixed in with just a little sci-fi.

Jessica Tandy was a treasure, and a great talent. Amber you mentioned how well they aged her at the end. Ms. Tandy was 80 years old in 1989 when this was released. She, in her career received an Academy Award, 4 Tony awards, a Bafta Award, a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award. She was born in the U.K, she performed in about 60 roles between movies and TV, and she did over 100 stage productions. She sadly passed about 5 years after this film at 85 years old. She lived and worked in England until she was divorced in 1940. She then came to the U.S. and she met Canadian actor Hume Cronyn. They married in 1942 and were together until her death in 1994. Driving Miss Daisy is only the third movie in history to win the Oscar for Best Picture (1989) without a directing nomination. It won four awards that year - Best Picture, Best Actress (Jessica Tandy as Daisy), Best Adapted Screenplay (Alfred Uhry, based on his stage play), and Best Makeup. Morgan Freeman and Dan Aykroyd also received acting nominations. Jessica Tandy remains the oldest Best Actress winner in history; she was 80 years old at the time of her win. At the time, she was the oldest winner of an acting Oscar in history, although it's been surpassed.

Jessica Tandy definitely deserved her Oscar but Morgan Freeman was robbed. He clearly deserved the Oscar that year. When it was released, it was seen as a landmark movie for it's depiction of race in the States. Subsequently, people have criticised it for being too simplistic and idealised.

Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy, and Dan Akroyd are all great actors and terrific human beings, they deserve all the accolades they receive in life, but I think Esther Rolle (Idella) also deserves as much attention with all that she's done throughout her career. Her role as Florida Evans on Goodtimes was superb, I see my mother in her every time I watch that show. R.I.P, Jessica and Esther, I know you're up in Heaven making everyone feel special. 😥

I love the entire Evans family. They were a big part of my early childhood watching the Good Times re-runs. JJ would give his sister so much grief, but when he had the chance to help her go to school, he was there for her. Ain't we lucky we got em?

Y’all should watch “My Girl” to see a great role by Dan Ackroyd in a great sweet movie. Also, for a look at Morgan Freeman in a very different role check out “Wanted”. He takes on a VERY different type role than almost anything else he’s ever done. He’ll show you just how versatile he can be. Jessica Tandy plays a wonderful role in “Fried Green Tomatoes” and also in “Cocoon” 1&2 which are really great and surprising movies.

One of my favorites. Jessica Tandy was a fabulous actress. Daisy was a proud, Jewish woman of independent means dealing with getting older and having to accept help. She fought it as long as she could only to realize her help had become her family. She knew about racism and anti-semitism and in her view at that time in history was correct. She wasn't prejudice. Anytime you have strangers in your home, you had to be cautious of stealing. Remember, She came through the depression where all food was like gold, even salmon. It wasn't sardines. Hoke, as anyone in her home did the right thing and earned her trust. Once trust was established, the friendship bloomed. In that day, if she were prejudice, she wouldn't have attended Idellas funeral much less sat next to Hoke. I've seen this version and the play on stage. Jessica, Morgan, Dan and Esther rocked their roles in this one.

I would like to recommend three other great movies I've watched that star Jessica Tandy, which were subsequently adapted from books. The first one is "Cocoon," which is based on the book by David Saperstein. It's the first book in a trilogy. The second one is "Fried Green Tomatoes," adapted from the book written by Fannie Flagg, who was one of my favorite panelists on "Match Game," if you know, you know. Last but not least, my third recommendation is "The World According to Garp," written by John Irving The World According to Garp is about a man who grows up to become a writer and has relationships with his mother, wife, and sons. The novel is considered an anti-feminist work, and features passages from Garp's books and an epilogue. Irving has said that the novel is not autobiographical, but that there are many similarities between the novelist and the title character. Starring Robin Williams as T. S. Garp

In the beginning, Hoke represented her loss of independence which she felt was forced upon her. Aside from her prejudices, that was why she didn't want him there, was so mean and short with him. But Hoke was strong and steadfast. He gradually got Daisy to warm up to him with his kind and patient nature. 😢❤

Fried Green Tomatoes is one of the best movies ever made and you guys need to see it!!! Jessica Tandy is amazing. She was mostly on Broadway and only did a few movies in her long career. This was a popular play on Broadway and she always played Mrs Daisy. The movie version of it almost didn't happen because it wasn't action packed or anything. When it finally got on the silver screen it hit number one in theaters

YAY!!! one of my top 10 favorite movies!!! Nominated for 9 Oscars, it won 4 including Best picture and Best Actress for Jessica Tandy, who played Miss Daisy. Dan and Morgan were both nominated for Oscars but did not win. Amber the Nursing home scene and the scene where she told Hoke he was her best friend got me also, two of the best scenes in any movie I have ever scene. Ask your mom about Esther Rolle, who played Idella, she also played the mother in a very popular tv comedy from the 70s called Good Times. The great Jessica Tandy, also is in FRIED GREEN TOMATOES , along with Cathy Bates. FGT is also very very heartwarming and also one of my all time favorite films.

I couldn't click on this reaction fast enuf. Such a classic with the best actors for the 3 leading parts. This was filmed in my home town. That Piggly Wiggly was an A&P when I grew up. When Hoak was in the phone booth, u can see my high school behind him. The house was around the corner from a park we used to hang in as teens. I know that house, was in the Lullwater Park neighborhood. It's cool when they're driving bc it's all my old stomping grounds & I recognize everything. That makes the movie even closer to my heart. I hung those neighborhoods from 6 yrs til I moved out of Atlanta at 21 but still frequented there since my parents still lived there & I worked close to Emory which is same neighborhoods. Anyway loved y'all's reactions & y'all made me cry AGAIN!! Can't tell u how many times I've seen this movie but it never gets old. The messages are epic & touching. So happy y'all finally got to see it. Have y'all seen Fried Green Tomatoes yet? If not .. I believe y'all will like that one too, another classic starring Jessica Tandy as well. Thank y'all for ur awesome reactions to this wonderful movie. I don't think I've ever seen a movie I didn't like that Morgan Freeman acted in. Anyway y'all have a safe & great weekend. ADDENDUM: This movie is based on a true life story between Lena Fox & her driver Will Coleman also of Atlanta. Lena's gson Alfred Uhry; a budding writer in his 20's had witnessed the interactions between his grandmother & her driver. Alfred penned his memories of the back & forth between the two over a 25 yr period to the best he remembered. I find that very interesting.

When Miss daisy was on the phone with Boolie and talked about the Ice Storm, I remember it well. My family had just moved to the farm outside of Rome, Georgia in 1959. The Ice Storm of 1960 was something to behold. The pine forest behind the house was hit hard. When the ice covered the trees the limbs would snap from the weight and sound like cannon fire every couple of minutes for hours on end. I was just about to turn seven but I'll never forget it. We were shut in for a week and the electricity was out. My Dad had run out of cigarettes so he did like Hoke and walked to the store in that mess to buy some. I also remember him rolling pipe tobacco with brown paper.
