BIG Aero Gains: Helmets, Calf sleeves, and Bottles Down Kits

This year we went to the Specialized Wind Tunnel in Morgan Hill, California to get faster on our triathlon bikes for the 2024 racing season. We tested numerous different water bottle positions, 6 different helmets including the Specialized TT5, the POC Cerebral, the MET Codatronca, the HJC Adwatt, and the Giro Aerohead. We also tested out aero calf sleeves from Castelli and swisside, and putting a water bottle down the front of a triathlon kit. The fastest aero helmet was the Specialized TT5, the second fastest was the MET Codatronca, and the third fastest by very small margin was the POC Cerebral. Calf sleeves were not found to be faster than bare skin, and putting a bottle down the front of the triathlon kit was not found to be faster.

Great video as always and great insight into wind tunnel testing, after 32 years in the sport its crazy how we now know the size of the helmet makes a difference. When I began in the sport 32 years ago, the most tech bit of kit we had was a Timex Ironman watch, basically a glorified stop watch! and the most tech bit was the fact that it had Ironman emblazoned across the top of the watch face. As a huge Paula fan, and On running fan loved Paula's new edition colorway On jacket, which must be a for now pro edition On are great at that releasing editions the everyday jo Bloggs athlete can't get just yet, just like the cloud boom echo carbon shoes which I understand our fab pro's are already in the possible next edition. Anyway fab as always, can't wait to get my 2024 TTL tri race suit when they arrive, and represent the TTL community. Super impressive that the testing was able to save 10+ watts considering you're experienced pros with already dialed in positions and equipment! Eric, it looks like the side of the armrest was pinching your forearm a bit near the elbow ( 8:20 & 8:38 ), made me wonder if they're adjustable in some way. Anyhow, I'm sure those comfort details will also be fined tuned. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you and your families!

yep they're totally adjustable and could be anlged a little bit to decrease any pressure there. But to be honest, I don't feel pressure there at all, I had to look at the video to see what you were referring to :)

Great insight and video! Did you both test at the same speed or did you differentiate and test at “true” average race speed?

Basically, you test at 50kph, and given your CDA, they can extrapolate gains at your exact race speed.

Question- I thought that triathletes get sponsored by certain companies right, so how can you try different helmets etc? Or do you then approach that company and ask them to sponsor you?

Yep, we’re not sponsored in the helmet category, so we bought all the helmets so we could find whichever one is fastest. And then yes, we could approach the maker of the best one and see if they wanted to partner in any way.

If you didn't know, if you go on the rode app you can changing the record settings to always record even if you do not have it connected to the camera or receiver ! That way you can use the camera audio to sync the clips and always will have some type of audio.

The Specialized TT5. It's a slightly refined version of the one that we tested last time, and I used a shortened visor version to get my face closer to my hands without hitting the visor

I posted wattage gains at the end of the testing, are you looking for something different? I just snuck under 2.0 CDA with all the improvements. Paula doesn't want to share her CDA, but it's much better than mine ;) -Eric

@ThatTriathlonLife I was hoping for cda yes, that way you can relate to it. Not everyone has access or can afford a wind tunnel session, so any tips would be useful. Like we tried this helmet which cost £500 and we went from 0.209 to 0.205, so about 4 watts saved for £500.

I'd say it's almost a perfect inverse correlation between coolness and aeroness 😂 But honestly, the helmet looks significantly cooler with a dark visor and no head sock. No aero helmet looks "good" with a clear visor IMO

Xterra North American Champs, some Olympic-Distance classics, making sure Paula has everything she needs to win PTO Intergalactic Triathlon Championships, a multisport FKT (fastest known time) film project, winning High Cascades 100 mountain bike race, maybe a 50k trail run... Basically anything and everything that triathlon fitness can be applied to. And filming all of it ✌️
