We (both just shy of 70) visited Ontario (and Canada) for the first time this September. We were determined to spend three complete days in Algonquin Park and to canoe and portage, also for the first time. We managed 1.2k on the longest. Now we've watched this trip of yours, we're coming back. You set a very high standard. Thank you for sharing it. As you say over there: 'Awesome!' We find the creeks the most fun, hauling over beaver dams and fallen log weirs.

I must thank you for sharing your adventures, I had a smile on my face throughout all seven episodes. Friends and I have been paddling Algonquin Park's lakes and rivers since the very early '80s and your videos bring back lots of memories. Chris and Julia, you are amazing women and great examples of how to canoe trip wisely and safely. I hope our paths cross in the park one day. If you happen to see three traditional canvas cedar canoes pulled up on shore and accompanied by three old codgers, come on in for a tea and chat. Algonquin Park has changed a lot over the years, not all for the better, in this old tripper's view, but it still my favourite place to dip a paddle. I do hope I can run the Pettawawa from Lake Traverse to Lake McManus once more before I'm too old. The campsite at the gorge after the Natch is breath taking! Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to seeing your next adventure.

Thank you for the opportunity to ask you two questions about your experiences in the park. Not entirely sure where to start, I have watched your vid on what to take ,how to pack etc but, I wondered about where to go. With a couple going on their first trip together, one with camping ,canoeing and outdoor experience and one with out ,wanting to have a few days in the park, getting away from the crowds, yet not an epic physical trip. Park access point,direction to head,what lakes etc?? I have gone in at Achray and Brent however it was with a bunch of guys experienced , fit and a lot younger than today, lol 😜😜. We have birding adventures planned for the future, so I want to get some trial trips in, pick some routes based on birding habitat, Warblers mostly, love the Warblers. Thank you for your time, Much appreciate. 🇨🇦🇨🇦👍👍👍😊 PS. Video editing is my next topic for you, steady as it goes building our KZbin channel , Bob V

We did our second trip to Algonquin last weekend to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary. Our first trip was a single night out and back to check out drive times etc. (we are in Buffalo NY). Our multi day outing last week was wonderful with a mix of exciting and beautiful weather plus awesome fall colors. Your videos are motivational, inspiring, and educational in addition to being beautiful. The videos are the reason we have made four trips to Canada with our canoe (2x Quebec + the Algonquin trips) this year and are setting the plans for 2018. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us! We hope to cross paths with you and Julia someday in the park.

Great video series! I really look forward to the Algonquin Camping/Canoeing and the photography/editing quality. Just a word of concern: Please be careful on the water - no schedule is worth your life (very much relieved to see the life jackets). Day 6 conditions were pretty bad. When I was younger I made a similar call to go out on the lake and later realized it was the wrong call (actually I figured it out halfway across the lake). You need experience to make the right decisions and usually, you get experience by making bad decisions. I really enjoy your videos nonetheless. Great work.

That was a great finish to a great trip. It's always nice to show that it is possible to paddle Opeongo (at least, on some days). As I said in my last comment on Day 6, you guys are definitely 'smoothing it' and making it look fun and easy. I do have a couple of tips or suggestions for you, though: Both are related to the food barrel. First is the way you position it in the canoe. Once it is mostly empty, it matters less. But early on, when it is full and heavy, having it upright is going to shift the center of gravity of your canoe a little higher. I dunno if it is enough to matter, but in general the lower you can position things, the more stable the canoe is going to be. So, in the first half of a long trip, when that barrel is still full, it might be a good idea to lay it on its side. I know it is a pain to put it in and take it out that way, but it might save you from dumping on some future occasion. Second, with respect to hanging the barrel: You guys obviously had no trouble with what you did. But the reality is that if you did get any critters who could smell the food in it and were determined to take a crack at it, having it positioned as you did is not going to help much. To thwart a determined bear, the barrel has to be much further from the trunk of the tree ... they can climb, after all. The same goes for the smaller nuisances like raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks. If the barrel is right next to the trunk, access for them is no problem. So, if you are going to go to the trouble to hang it, it should be off of a sturdy branch and well away from the trunk. I am looking forward to the Q&A and your next adventures!
@ChrisProuse7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You're entirely right on both points - we get the comment about the barrel a lot... though we're frequently in & out of the barrel for camera equipment a lot, and to keep snacking on the go when we're tight for time (because I film too much sometimes, lol) so it's just more practical for us to leave it upright. Most of the heavy stuff is at the bottom of it, and the other (heavier) canvas backpack in the bottom of the boat offsets it quite a bit. I come from a competitive rowing background too where the racing shells are much more tippy, so the canoe feels like a barge in comparison. At the time when we put the bear hang up the previous night, we were dealing with mild hypothermia from being out in the cold wind and rain all day... our primary concern was to start warming up asap, and there just weren't many options unfortunately.

I've watched your trip and it looks great. I did a trip 20 years ago to just lake Opeongo. I'm currently planning a follow up this year. What time of year were you there? looks like you had some good weather and some chilly.

Thanks Trever! This trip was filmed during the last week of May I believe - if the temps are nice, it's a great time to go right before the bugs arrive in early June :)

@@ChrisProuse Thanks for the reply! Thats great news. One of my dates for this year is to go the last week in May(7-8 nights). I'd really like to try to get up to Lake Crow and then backtrack back down to Opeongo. We're not quite the portage masters like you guys! thanks for the great videos.

Excellent... love the attention to production. May I ask what cameras you are using? I am mulling over an upgrade.

Thank you! This was filmed with a Panasonic GX85, on a PilotFly H2 gimbal, along with Pany's 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens in most cases, and an older adapted 50mm f1.8 Nikon lens on a speedbooster during some of the low-light night shots. You can find out more about my filming rig in this vid here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m53boaypqrihjdE The GX85's definitely a great value for the price, and it's a pretty nimble little camera... though it does tend to blow the highlights, the IBIS can be a little jellowy at times when walking without a gimbal, and filming in 4K eats through batteries / memory cards really quickly. If you have more in the budget, I'd probably recommend going with a GH5, just because it fixes the first two issues. Both cameras would be great options for filming in 4K, though if you prefer to keep your file sizes down by filming in 1080p, I'd probably recommend going with something like a Canon 80D, which has a more dependable phase-detect autofocusing system. Hope this helps, and keep up the great work - your vids are fantastic! :)

Good morning! I don't know if you'll see this, but I'm curious how often you see bears and/or wolves while you're backcountry camping? Have they been a concern for you?
