Good lord, SolaWrap should pay you heaps for this. I had so many questions and you made it look VERY doable. Your fixes for potential problems are brilliant and tell me where I need to be very precise on building my frame. Many thanks.

I am building a 12ft x 8 ft cattle panel greenhouse with the SolaWrap. I thought it was pretty easy to work with. I'm happy to report it's already taken one hail storm that took out many roofs in the area and the SolaWrap did just fine. I also have the "wrinkled" look in the SolaWrap and I read of others reporting the same thing. Apparently it's just a cosmetic thing.

I like the idea of the individual panels... that way you only lose that one area if there's any ripping. Makes more sense. Also the 'double wall' bubble material... seems much stronger... better r value? That's one substantial build!

How do you like the Solawrap now after 2 years Rob? I'm planning a passive solar greenhouse and looking at the pros and cons of these 4 options: 16mm polycarbonate Solexx (5mm or 3.5mm) Solawrap Double inflated 6mil polyethylene
@Bigelowbrook3 жыл бұрын
I like it. I have a couple of bubbles that have pinholes in them and have filled with water which isn't a big deal. The biggest problem is it isn't bear-proof and I have a couple of sections that need to get replaced this spring.

Now that you've had a chance to work with that plastic, how would you rate it? Was it worth the extra time to install?
@Bigelowbrook6 жыл бұрын
I really like it. Since I basically work by myself, it's easier to install than having to hire a crew to try setting up 150' of sheeting that will only last 4-5 years. This stuff it more expensive, but should last until I retire. I like to do things just once. ;-)
@wadeneumann49596 жыл бұрын
how much more expensive? I've been given a chance to use it in australia, where regular plastic dies really quickly. but it's hard to do a cost breakdown. I know you love the details Rob!
@Bigelowbrook6 жыл бұрын
Probably should plan on about 4 times the cost of a two layer poly sheet. But it sure will be nice not to have to dispose of the old plastic and hire a crew to put new stuff on every 4-5 years.
@wadeneumann49596 жыл бұрын

That "bubble wrap" plastic seems like a lot of labor. Would you say the increased r value is worth it? Did you "run the numbers"?
@incubatork6 жыл бұрын
one of the worst enamies of plastic covered greenhouses is the tension on the plastic, if its drum taught you will have no problem if it has any slack in it it will break there, the wind causes waves in the not taught area ant it will split. I think if i was making mine with section plastic i would have put in 1 hoop at a time, plastic then pull the hoop taught and filled it in. with the slacknes in some of your panels i hope it stands high winds.

so far, so good. I have a few pin holes in the outer layer. Note sure what from. Could be bird strikes to meteorites?
@SimpleTek6 жыл бұрын
No disrespect but It seems like a lot of extra work than simple double layer poly with an air blower. I'm concerned it doesn't have the same amount of insulation value. double air blown polly is 1-2 feet of air gap, this seems to be just an inch or so of bubbles and big gaps between them. Any idea how the insulation ratings would compare?
@Bigelowbrook6 жыл бұрын
double poly has an r-value of 1.5 (single is .85). This is 1.7, 10 year warranty against UV and many greenhouses have had this installed for 25 years. The poly will last 4-5. I can put this up myself and don't need to hire a crew to pull 150' of plastic and hope the wind doesn't pick up. It is more expensive but in the long run it pays for itself. in reduced labor, purchases, disposal, and risk of tearing.

I notice that they are premade, the number one rule to the longevity of any greenhouse plastic it tight and the less it moves the less it tears,,,, how will you correct the lose section or tighten then ?... also whats the life span the cover on this type of panels ?
@Bigelowbrook6 жыл бұрын
this is more durable than just standard poly covering. It has a 10 yr warranty and there are greenhouses in Europe that have had it installed for 20+ years. It can stay loose.
@lakesideinc6 жыл бұрын
ive never see it done this way,,, I wish you the best of luck ,,,, I think I may be making my own youtube channel... I too just bought greenhouses .. 4 - 30 x50 one of these are a truss frame that takes verigated poly panels and 3 - hoop houses 14x50 ..at $1000 I had to buy them .... I have a lot to do... but marketing in my area was a no brainer... there is no one... Walmart being the closet ( and we all know here those veggies come from .. anywhere but the US...lol ) I want 1 as aquaponics ,,, but my best market here are flats ... flowers and veggies.. they get 17 to 23 dollars a flat..way to high!!! .. I know I can do them out the door for half of that and be comfortable.... guess I should get some cameras before I start... help financing is a must... and being partially disabled leave me a "risk" as the banks call it ... ugh ... got my work cut out for me..... if you don't mind ...id like to keep in touch with you for pointers and what not

Why not build a shed on the end where you can go into and out to buffer and reduce the heat loss, especially during winter time. You can store you things such as fertilizer, spare parts and garden tools in that shed at the end of the green house. You can then use all the available space under the greenhouse cover to grow food.
@Bigelowbrook6 жыл бұрын
It's cheaper to build greenhouse than a building. Besides, the original plan shows a barn in a future phase of the project.
@limerickman85126 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about plywood and timber shed (maybe a little insulation for winter), with weather proofing outside layer. Something that can be put up in a day or two.
@Bigelowbrook6 жыл бұрын
A greenhouse this size would need something larger than a shed...then that requires building permits and is also taxable. ;-) Hoop houses here don't need either of those. :)
