My fish management and aquaculture teacher said we wouldn't see aquaponics become popular in our lifetime! I've raised rainbow trout with very high growth rates and my herbs did great so cold and cool water fish can be done. You have the best growth rates I've seen so far and have a grasp on what your doing. If I would have known you where there I could have done a internship there instead of going to China which was a pain. China was a great place to learn aquaculture and aquaponics as they have fish/shrimp growing in the ponds with plants and herbs that have been bred to have hardy root systems. Even indoors as soon as the fish can take to eating commercial food they are raised in a perfectly balanced system till harvest. Most are carp which are a popular eating fish in most countries. Thousands of years of practice and breeding and all that information is unavailable to other countries. I was only their for four months and everyone had different methods. So much we could learn from them. I was most impressed by a greenhouse that used stacked pots with mirrors to get light to the lower levels. They used lights as too while taking turns cranking a generator to power them and the water pumps! This was a setup to feed two families and sell what the didn't preserve.

what does a system like this cost to startup? why the circular tanks instead of the rectangular tanks? is tilapia the most suitable or other species can also do the work?

Nice setup. Great video. You spoke about purging the fish before eating them. Can you tell me what this entails? Thanks so much.
@TimFarmerCK8 жыл бұрын
Basically........let them poop for several days and cleanse their system while not feeding them....possum under the washtub deal...lol

curiosity: why are you feeding your fish commercially made food? why not duckweed and red wiggler worms?
@Gavin-1487 жыл бұрын
Those are good, but eventually you need to bring in protein from outside the system since you're taking it out when you harvest. Theres no free lunch, but you can get close.

red wigglers can be harvested from compost bins and would be an outside source from the system. I can see using commercial fish feed to supplement from time to time. but generally speaking, bio-available protein from red wigglers harvested from a compost bin would be more naturopathic. the only issues with composting is running a multi-platform operation and being able to manage 2+ systems simultaneously...

Why was a Green house needed in Haiti since it is hot?
@bryanst.martin71348 жыл бұрын
Because it's hot! Some plants will do well in high temps, but do equally well in temperatures more suited to many other plants. Keeping Tilapia under 80 degrees keeps them from spawning rampantly. Just move the breed stock to warmer waters for that purpose. I am just learning this stuff too, so I watch everything on youtube and balance out the info.

Erm, the fish are killed by oxygen starvation? In Germany, and probably some other countries, this is actually illegal. Mainly because there are better ways....
