The unmistakable sound and talents of the Syd Lawrence Orchestra in a recording from 1990, just eight years before Syd sadly died. The Orchestra, noted for its Glen Miller style, is still going strong under the direction of Chris Dean and is as popular as ever. If you get the opportunity to hear them live, I urge you not to miss it!

Ah! I knew that had to be Ronnie! Great to see him in action. Mostly only musicians know he is the real drummer behind Animal of the Muppets. Too bad we dont see more of Syd Lawrence's Orchestra in the States. Im grateful KZbin has this concert 🎼🎹🥁🎷🎺 *Rest In Peace:* Ronnie Verrell 1926-2002 Buddy Rich 1917-1987 Jack Parnell 1923-2010 Gene Krupa 1909-1973 Jeff Porcaro 1954-1992

Fabulous! Takes me back to the days when I used to see the band at a packed Wembley Conference Centre. This was the band! Fantastic section work, superlative drumming from Ronnie Verrell. Surely the UKs leading big band drummer. There are few that can drive a band like this now. Even more exhilarating live! Chis Dean still fronts the band, they tour all over the country, well worth going. The band is full of young really superb players..... Still swinging over 40 years later. Amazing to think this band has outlived all the bands from the big band era....

Couldn't agree more, Christopher. This Band is the greatest - and you must experience a live performance just to see how great! Chris (Dean) continues to deliver in the great traditions of Orchestra, which there are no superlatives adequate-enough to describe and anyone who enjoys this kind of music should make certain to take in a live concert when they can. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this short video.

Sid had some good drummers but Ronnie brought Ted Heath to the band and took them up another notch. Great concert but shame trumpet section was a bit out of mic range at times. Loved the Night Ride number by Sid Phillips and the Ambrose band. One of the first I ever heard on Dad's 78s. Think it was Cotton Pickers Congregation on other side. Any old enough to know?

Peter, thanks very much for putting the Syd Lawrence concert on you tube. My, that brings back many memories of going to Syd's concerts and dances back in the 70s, 80s and 90s, and as for Ronnie Verrell, he in my opinion was the greatest drummer he was my idol and I was lucky enough to meet him at a dance in Weymouth in 1984, he gave me his autogragh which I treasure. Thanks once again Mike Harvey

Syd Lawrence was my first introduction to big band music in the 1970s when I started working in theatre, and years later bumped into Ronnie Verrell at the bar after a show - and I plucked up the courage to ask him what had happened to his back, as he had to lift his leg up to be able to order a drink, so stooped he was, and he smiled and said he'd show me, m and rolled back onto a chair, and he rolled into perfect drum playing position - he said he'd been playing the drums so long he'd just got stuck like it! Great sense of humour, called me 'lad' - which was great!

Thanks Peter, for uploading the great Syd Lawrence orchestra. This orchestra along with Ted Heath are without a doubt, the two greatest British bands ever. Note, a lot of the musicians were connected with both of these superb organizations. The great Ronnie Verrell was the drummer requested by Buddy Rich to play with "Animal" and the gang! Thank goodness he lived in the "right" country.

I have to tell you a funny story about Ted Heath and I. My Mom & Dad took me to N.Y. in Jan. 19955 just after I graduated in mid year from Notre Dame. You mention Ted Heath, yes I think he was great too. I was in the "Rose room" in the Pennsylvania hotel to hear Les and Larry Elgart play. Larry Elgart introduced Ted Heath. I could not see where he was and I kept asking my parents, "Where is he"? "He is from England and has a great band." I felt a tap on my shoulder from directly behind me. A friendly voice said, " here I am son" ! "Thank you for your nice compliment."

What memories. Grew up with this band from the very beginning. Combination of BBC Northern Dance Orchestra musicians and some I think from the Granada TV Big Band. went every week to the rehersals when they would practice and then play through a new arrangement each week building up a Glen Miller book. They moved pubs at one time , can't remember if they went to or from Sale. Iv'e lived in Cornwall now 30 odd years but managed to see Sid leading at a dance ( great ) back in the eighties and seen Chris leading them a couple of times in Truro.

Oh forgot, memory going ( but still play some mean drums ). Was visiting relatives in Norfolk and found Sid was show for the reopening of The Theatre Royal, Norwich. Had my son with me and managed to get cancelled tickets. Went to the pub round the corner from the theatre before the performance and some of the band were in. Later Ronnie Verrell ( my hero from Ted Heath days ) came in. He had a few short ones and I thought, whoops. Came out, first number, big uptempo, might have been Cherokee and he didn't miss a thing, brilliant.

Takes me back to being young. Chris Dean the band leader since Syd passed borrowed my trombone to play sessions in the beer garden at the White Horse pub (Jersey) late 70's. Trombone section was Chris Dean (lead), Andy Smith, Bernie Bean (bass) and Steve (baby face) Wilkes. Drummers over the time were Andy Jarvis, Kenny Claire, Ronnie Verrell; Other players I remember were Ken Ingarfield (bass), Ken ----- (piano); Freddie Staff (lead) trumpet; Ken Kiddier (baritone) sax, Andy Taylor (Alto). Not to forget Roy Marsden and never to forget Marie Toland (school kid crush on her.) Rest of the people I wish I could remember the names; the faces are still there. Thanks to Uncle Syd, Chris D and all the boys. Howard Davis Park; the walk from the car park at the post office (Mont Millais); the sound of the band floating across the park. Think all would wish to go back to that time again.

Yes but remember Premier merged with Yamaha for a few years in the 80's when they (Premier), were not going too well financially, and I believe Yamaha made this kit exclusively for Ronnie V. to use in the SLO. It also has some Premier hardware in the mix, and I will stick my neck out and say that the large floor toms appear to have Premier lugs and tension rods, which Yamaha used when the merger took place. Thankfully Premier is stand alone again these days.

Yes Ronnie Verrell kicked that band on drum set. Buddy Rich liked him. I liked him. There are drummers and there are drummers. Ronnie is one of those guys who had the spark plugs to drive and motivate. People don't know this but Ronnie was the drummer on the muppet show that played Animal when Buddy Rich was show cased. thanks for playing a great big band with the great Ronnie Verrelll on the trap set. thank you

I met Andy a couple of times at Pakefield Holiday park in the good old days. He's got to be one of the best lead Alto and sax players the UK has ever produced. Be proud.

Unfortunately, only the left-hand side of the stereo sound has been uploaded (to both channels), making it mono and with trumpets and trombones low in the mix. Sad, because it's not as originally balanced.

@@paulsawtell3991 oh I believe they could do it! Just as you don't see much point in Do Ellis's arithmetic challenges I don't see the point in wanting to sound like someone else! Pay tribute to others by all means but do it in your own way
