Big Bear Eagle Cam ~ Close Encounters ~ Shadow & Mrs BB Nips, Beaking & Vocals By Both 7.16.18

Tonight we have some really interesting interactions between Shadow & Mrs BB. Shadow arrives to the nest first followed by Mrs BB. Some light beaking, then Shadow busies himself with the pine cone gift he brought in the other day, I think he wanted Mrs to look at his gift! lol We see a lot of physical contact, closeness between them as they work on the nest. Mrs goes up to Dad's branch 5:11 - Shadow continues to work then follows Mrs up to Dad's Branch. Mrs drops down to the nest and Shadow follows slowly watching her every move. Some bumping of bodies & beaking, Shadow is submissive to Mrs. She vocalizes & throws her head back at 10:11 and Shadow responds with a little grunt like vocal! The look on Mrs face is priceless! We have more nipping and bumping as Shadow goes to her branch and she goes to Dad's branch. She comes back to the nest and Shadow flies in with a small stick in his beak - he drops on the nest as Mrs beaks at him several times & vocalizes at 15:31 Shadow slightly nips at her tail at 15:59 as she is turning around!! Then Mrs goes to her branch and Shadow will move sticks then to Dad's branch. They are starting to bond with all this physical touching & interactions & it is fascinating to watch and see what happens. As for Stormy, a search was conducted on Sunday at BB but there were no sightings of him. There are some leads and a couple other places that Trish M will search but as of right now the last time Stormy as been seen was July 5th. I do hope that he is spotted so that we will have confirmation he is indeed in the area still and is okay. Thank you for watching!

The latest update from Trish M on the search for Stormy: Today was special at Captain Johns Fawn Harbor and Marina as some gathered to share in their passion and love of bald eagles and we did a lake and shoreline search for Stormy. The search has eliminated some possibilities and the attention brought has some fine new leads about where Stormy may have retreated to rest and recover from several things he may not have expected. Stormy has had Shadow move into his habitat and so it seems from my pictures and others that he moved EAST last month. Most of Stormy's tail feathers went missing and then he had a firework show as well as his heaviest visitor traffic. Last OFFICIAL sighting with documented pictures that show bands is JULY 5th. If Stormy had appeared healthy on our last sighting and behaving in a normal fashion on July 5th, most of us would believe he might have left town and on his way. There are very good reasons to believe Stormy is still nearby and in the surrounding area. We hope he is growing new feathers and eating well. It will not surprise me at all after hearing the possible leads if Stormy makes an appearance soon where he was once feeding and thriving with the other young eagles. Thank you to ALL who came out today for the search. I'm now working on a post of pictures we have received from members of today's group of the the three eagle sightings. Three ages of eagles sighted today. One mature eagle believed to be PAPA one sub adult that appears to be Shadow and one newer juvenile similar looking to Stormy yet has a full tail. I think this is unnecessary worry. I've read about eagles and those tail feathers and it only causes some minor flying and landing issues. They'll grow back. Last time we saw Stormy he still looked good other than the missing feathers.Didn't look like he was attacked or anything.

Lady Hawk - Thank you for this update. I live up in Green Valley Lake and the Eagles and Osprey come through there (from BB) daily for fishing. Have seen lots of adults (or the same one over and over) but no juvies. I was wondering about the fireworks and what it must do to the poor animals and birds who simply receive a huge shock of all that noise and light for a good 30 minutes.

There was some blood seen, on Stormy's right rear side, in photos Trish shared with me, that were not posted. This was one reason,among others for the concern. He was looking very thin in the last photo Trish took of him on July 5th in the tree. He also was flying so low, that he baring was above vehicles. To me, that those are all valid concerns.

Thank you very much Lady Hawk for the update on Stormy, like others here I also thought about him all day - waiting for an update, Thanks. Shadow can still only make a grunting sound when his head is tilted upright it really does look like fish-hook damage to his vocal cords. We know Shadow has a good voice when his head is at right-angles to his neck and when tilted down, so he has a voice and is happy about it. Thank you for this video and for answering all our questions about our beloved Stormy. That is the risk of living wild and free however much it gives us heart-aches.

I am always so happy to see your new videos of these two. I just love watching them. You're right the look on her face when he made that little grunt sound in response to her call was priceless! These videos always bring more questions, today's question is how old is Mrs. BB approximately? Thank you again Lady Hawk for making these videos of Mrs. BB and Shadow. I'm a little sad to find out that Storny disappearance has something to do with Shadow. I do hope that Stormy is found. I watched the ABC news segment on him and the search and I got teary, mostly because so many people have grown to love him from watching him grow up. I'm hopeful he will come back soon and everyone will be happy and relieved to see him.

GA Lady Hawk! The next episode of "As The Nest Turns" shows Shadow definitely excited to show Mrs. BB his previously delivered pine cone gift! Watching closely we can see how he picks it up and nudges it with his beak on several occasions in front of her to show her he had brought it for her. At the 8:35 mark, Mrs. in with a branch and Shadow comes to help place it. Working on the nest like this in close proximity to one another definitely shows cooperation between them. Mrs. BB's happy vocals at 10:15 with Shadow's small response are proof that their relationship is building! Mrs. BB selfie at 11:15mark. Shadow brings a branch at 14:20 which soon after resulted in beaking and more vocals by the Mrs. at 15:30. One of my fav scenes was 15:57 with Shadow nipping her tail feathers playfully. Shadow selfies at 19:30. What a night for our newest Eagle soap opera! 😂. Thanks Lady Hawk!❤ ttys

Thank you for the update on Stormy, Lady Hawk. I watched Shadow come to the nest last night and he stayed there for about 45 minutes or so. Then, Mrs. BB shows up. She left and brought a stick back. It seems strange Stormy hasn't made an appearance near the nest, unless he deliberately left on his way. I sure hope someone spots him soon.

And I hope Shadow heads out this fall like other 3 year old eagles to roam and explore. I would hate to see an encounter between him and Mr. BB. Shadow is too young to mate and take care of chicks. IMO.

10:21 Shadow, a man of few words! I’m rewatching this saga in 2019 and it’s hilarious. Much better love story than Twilight. Looks like almost no one predicted that Shadow’s strategy would be successful and he would be able to effectively evict Mr.BB from his nest. Meanwhile we are half through 2019 breeding season and Shadow is proving to be a wonderful partner and father! Thank you Lady Hawk for these videos! P.S. Love watching these two bonding it seems mrs bb misses stormy and needs to be mama and that's why she is allowing shadow on the nest. I hope stormy is ok and returns home so we can see her and know she is ok..if shadow is on the nest i hope that doesn't make stormy feel replaced. Thanks again for capturing a great scene! I love the look Mrs. B gives Shadow after she vocalizes and he snort-grunts. Then when he tried to nip her in the tail as she turned around it looked like she wanted to say, "Well I oughtta...." Lol. I think she's trying to tell Shadow this is not your nest and never will be your nest so back off. And if he thinks bringing a little tiny stick to the nest is going to impress her, he's not real bright. Very cute episode. :)

Shadow is learning many things by being allowed on his active nest - usually that does not happen. Shadow is a young sub adult who is learning about nest building and socialization now. I am certain Shadow is acting out of instinct..doing what was imprinted in him since hatch. Shadow has taken a liking to Mrs BB and if there were not a Mr BB in the picture may have become her next mate. But for now we will have to wait and see what happens between them and Mr BB.

Dream Big I hate the thought of it but it could be possible that Shadow attacked Stormy to take his place in the nest and to court Jackie. It happens quite frequently eagles fighting to take over nests, mates and territories. I still think that M15 attacked Ozzie for that reason.

No I don't see Shadow attacking Stormy at all Isabelle. Shadow was submissive to Stormy several times when they first were on the nest.Shadow is also submissive to Mrs BB and Mr too .Stormy may have had a fight with another eagle - not over territory as Stormy is too young but over food. Ozzie and M15 fought over Harriet, the nest and the territory. M15 did not attack Ozzie.Ozzie came to reclaim his territory and went after M.

Thanks, LH, for another intriguing and entertaining episode. If we are correctly interpreting some romantic interest brewing here, do you think Mrs BB has any understanding that a mating with Shadow would not result in viable eggs bc he is sexually immature? I assume he probably could mate but not be able to fertilize her? I’m a relatively new eagle follower here, so please forgive my ignorance if these are silly questions. Do you think there is a possibility of her mating again with Mr BB, but actually nesting with Shadow to raise the resulting eggs bc she seems to enjoy his company more than Mr BB’s? Are you aware of any other adult females in the area as a possible new mate for Mr B.B.? Maybe he could find someone who finds him irresistible-not so sure Mrs BB was head over heels for him. Oh, the possibilities 🤗

Hi - No Mrs BB would have no knowledge at all if she mated with Shadow and the eggs were infertile. However, we have seen and it is documented that sub adults as young as 3 years old have successfully mated and produced eaglets. So Shadow may very well be able to fertilize the eggs. No worries - ask away that is how we learn. I do think there is a good possibility she will go back to Mr BB next season. It could produce a trio cooperative nest 2 males and a female if they parties all agree. There are several eagles in the area and sub adults and juvies so yes there are options!
