Big Bear Eagle Cam ~ Shadow's Beautiful Vocals, Beaking, Wing Slaps & Nips By Mrs. BB 7.1.18

Mrs. BB arrives with a stick to the nest and immediately Shadow follows and lands on Mom's branch and slowly works his way to the nest. Mrs. BB nips at Shadows wing and beaks and vocalizes throwing her head back at 3:06. Shadow answers her. This is by far the best vocals we have heard and seen by Shadow! Mrs. BB goes to her branch and Shadow works on the nest moving sticks for some time. Nice selfies at 16:34 by Shadow. Shadow goes to Mom's branch at 19:10 and she is not happy with that move and vocalizes and wing slaps Shadow off the branch. Shadow immediately returns to the branch/nest & tries to occupy his time before trying again to perch close to Mrs BB at 24:15. Mrs. BB vocalizes and at 28:30 Shadow departs the tree on his own. What an interesting evening of dynamics between them now. Thank you for watching!

So wonderful to hear Shadow speak! It’s almost as if he is just learning or his voice has become hoarse from infrequent use. Nothing to say? Not enough self confidence to speak up? It seems as though he may be slightly less subservient in keeping his head down when Mrs BB gently nips him since he has been vocalizing . She certainly has helped him mature in several ways. GM Lady Hawk🌞! These could be the most interesting dynamics and interactions we've seen with Shadow and Jackie! When Shadow first attempts to enter the nest she doesn't vocalize but lands some nips and the some vocals later. They do work the nest together like we wanted to see! Shadow's vocals were awesome after that 3:06 mark! Mom really doesn't like Shadow perching in front of her as we've seen her displeasure with him blocking her view lol. Well we knew Shadow could screech but now he can vocalize. Eagle’s vocals are so beautiful. I listen to Harriet and M’s vocals, and they are the most beautiful vocals I have heard. Thanks for this video. I believe Mrs BB is Shadow’s teacher🤗🦅🦅

This relationship is so interesting to watch. I wonder if Mr. BB is still near by as we have never seen him come to the nest to protect Mrs. BB and the nest when Shadow is near. Stormy made sure he protected his nest from Shadow before he departed, but otherwise it seems to be all Mrs. BB. Interesting that Shadow chose Mrs. BB to follow...he just wants to be near her anytime he is visiting the nest. So happy to hear his voice...was a bit weak at first, but then was strong. Being as submissive as he appears to be, I don't think he uses his voice much. Being around Mrs. BB might help him find his voice pretty quick. I just wish I knew what Mrs. BB is thinking about this juvie...having just gotten Stormy out of the nest she may be annoyed that this juvie is hanging around. Regardless, such a sweet relationship...enjoying every minute we get to see with these two!!

Shelly Zinda - From what I’ve heard, Shadow is very submissive to both Mr & Mrs BB, so there is no need to stand up to each other or fight. I know that Eagles are very social birds unless food is present or during the mating season. Mr BB may or may not like their relationship once mating season begins again, but it will be very interesting to watch it all unfold!

I get it now. All long Mrs. BB has been flirting with Shadow to get him to work on the nest. So what we really have is Mrs. BB is really a COUGAR. (Her real name may be Mrs. Robinson)All long my husband has said, "he wants to be her man". ❤🦅❤I told him Shadow is too young, but could he be older than we think??? I was so glad he made a REAL Eagle call. When he started to call, the first noise was like a squawk. I thought oh no, he does have some damage of some sort. But then a most beautiful sound came out. I hope Shadow does hang around and that Mr. BB is not so mean to him that he leaves. Thanks Lady Hawk for this video. We have ALL been waiting to hear Shadow's voice.

I don't watch the live cam, but I haven't seen any you tube videos showing Mr. BB since about the time Shadow came around. Maybe he's off doing his own thing and Mrs. BB is doing hers and this normal? lol. Who knows but I think they are pretty cute couple no matter what.

Oh my, how Much did I love hearing Shadow's voice! 🤗 But what gave me a giggle, was Shadow on Mama's branch! I could virtually see her wing tips on her hip as She says, Now Look! I didn't invite you over here on My branch! If you want to be here, then You go back over on the nest! Then as She got more & more aggravated with Shadow not leaving, She says, I've already Told you to leave, Now! Begone! Go on, get! Then comes the wingslaps... I'm not kidding now! I'm.(wingslap) Not. (wingslap) Playing.! (wingslap) I. Will. Hurt. You.! wingslapslap! Begone! Go Away! And poor stubborn Shadow falls off the branch. Can't y'all just See that? The other day, there was a photo of Stormy and it clearly showed the feathers missing on the tail. The person said they contacted a knowledgeable person who said the feathers will re-grow and Stormy will be fine. If I can find the picture I will post it. Kind of busy with 7 grandkids here but I will as soon as I find time.

I think they're Both getting something they need from this relationship. From her interaction with Stormy, they had Such a loving tender relationship. I'm thinking that She misses that. Wasn't ready for it to be over. Now She has Another chance with this juvenile for her to feel that she's needed & able to nourish her maternal instincts. And Shadow... Well, for whatever reason S/he may not seem to want to move on with the next stage in her/his development, S/he still wants a Mama in her/his life & is very needy. Since I didn't get to see how this little Juvie related to her/his Mom, Lucy , maybe it was a very close relationship, as with Stormy & Mrs BB & S/he wants more of it. Maybe S/he wasn't making friends his age. Funny, when Shadow was coming to the nest when Stormy was there, we thought S/he wanted to make friends with Stormy. Who knew that it was Stormy's Mom that S/he wanted to be friends with! Whatever happens, I'm Loving watching it! Just my opinion, All! 😉

Since Stormy cannot return to the nest due to some missing tail feathers, does Mrs BB still feed him off the nest. Stormy is still too young to be completely on his own right? Guess Shadow can use the nest until Stormy gets some new feathers. I saw a post about the missing feathers and is didn't seem to be a problem because it said they would regrow in a few weeks. Hope I am right about the information.

Hi Linda - no Shadow is not related to Mrs BB. Shadow most likely hatched in 2015 with a couple named Ricky & Lucy. Shadow has been hanging around the nest and Mrs BB for weeks now and is a 3 year old sub adult.

Hi Luxsword no Stormy is still in the area and was photographed a couple of days ago - he is missing some of his tail and wing feathers though -not sure what happened to him but he is fine and flying around :)

This sub adult is about 2 years old. She won’t mate with it. Come mating season if this juvenile hasn’t left then both Mrs BB and her mate will run if off their territory.

The sub adult is 3- 3.5 years old and can mate as young at 3 years old per Dr. Sharpe biologist at the IWS. He has observed sub adults mating and rearing chicks as young as 3 years old. We don't know what will happen to Shadow come mating season but it is possible that Mr BB will chase Shadow off.
