Big Bear Eagle ~Heartbreaking News! Ravens Eat Jackie & Shadow's Egg! Jackie Returns Too Late 1.7.21

Jackie leaves the nest to take a break and twelve minutes later two ravens come to the nest. One of the ravens eats Jackie and Shadow's egg :( They stay on the nest for several minutes until Jackie comes flying in fast but she is too late. Heartbreaking to see them lose their egg! Jackie looks down at the nest for her missing egg. Shadow does not even know there was an egg laid. Hopefully Jackie will lay a second egg in 2-3 days or on Saturday Jan. 9th. Thank you for watching!

Jan 7th 2021 ~ Shadow's vocals have been heard close by tonight at 5:17:43 and Jackie answered him while she was lying on the nest. Shadow is fine and is doing normal eagle things and will return to the nest in his own eagle time. Jackie is on the nest tonight sleeping. Jackie and Shadow are a strong couple and will overcome this tragedy and loss of of their egg and will hopefully have another opportunity with a second egg laid in a couple of days!

Came across this in 2024, as I currently watch Jackie still incubating her non vital eggs, than to see this video makes it all even more sad. As much as we tell ourselves it is just nature's way, it still hurts to watch. Hoping to watch Jackie and Shadow try again and all their hard work to pay off.

Ravens are neither nasty nor cunning. The eagles prey on other animals too and most of us humans eat eggs. That raven fed its young and the juvenile was learning skills necessary for life as a raven.

This is so sad. Two years ago, the two never left the eggs - one was always there to protect them. But, I did not watch the nest 24/7. If I remember right, Jackie would call for Shadow. I could be wrong.

It's heartbreaking watching this and clear we had a breakdown of communication between Jackie and Shadow. If Shadow didn't know he had an egg then he wouldn't be there to relieve Jackie. We know that Jackie can't incubate on her own had no choice but to leave. All the hard work she went through was lost. We may see a repeat of this if Shadow does not come to the nest during or after when Jackie lays egg#2, I pray we do not have a repeat as it's too difficult to watch. Sorry this happened Lady Hawk and sorry to all the viewers, supporters and everyone who loves our J&S💔

@@tunnelcrawler3875 Hello Tunnel yes Jackie and Shadow are a strong couple but the season is still early and Shadow does not come to the nest every day at this point and he does not know she laid an egg yesterday. We heard his vocals tonight right before dark so he is close by - we will most likely see him tomorrow. Hopefully Jackie will lay her 2nd egg in a couple of days and Shadow will be here to see it - once he knows an egg is on the nest he will incubate it.

I knew those ravens were gonna be a problem...they been hanging around nest alot these past weeks. Sad news for us southern calif eagle fans!! Sorry for the loss to the Big Bear community. Unfortunately a lot of sadness seems to haunt this nest. Very sad right now!! A bit puzzled as to why egg was left alone...usually only one adult gone at a time. The circle of life can be brutal...appears this is an adult still feeding a juvie.

Awwww this is sooo sad, isn’t Jackie and shadow the eagle pair that has had a lot of bad luck in recent years with their eggs? I feel so bad for them. Talons crossed that the next egg will be safe!

Yes they have some difficulties each season. In 2018 they lost one eaglet named Triple B to hypothermia and Cookie in 2019 to hypothermia. Last season Jackie laid two eggs but they were non viable and not hatch - J and S kept incubating them for 2+ months before finally leaving them for the ravens to consume. It was thought that they probably froze early on after Jackie laid them. The weather here at Big Bear is harsh.

Oh no...those Ravens know when to catch Jackie (and Shadow) off guard and are targeting them. Seeing Jackie looking down for her egg...heartbreaking indeed. Hopefully, Jackie can lay another egg but she & Shadow are going to need to stay very close to Nest and coordinate breaks where no one leaves their Nest Home unattended. Wish they would only visit nests and leave the eggs alone! But we know Ravens won't do that.

Jackie needs to find another male eagle. Shadow has never been a good father. He has never brought food in like he should. Last year Jackie had to go and leave the Eaglets before to get food for them because Shadow didn't bring any. Jackie needs to kick Shadow out, he is not mature enough to do what is necessary. She needs a male like M15 is. I

Shadow is a good father. He did amazing with his first eaglets for being a newly matured first time dad. He incubated and provided plenty of fish for Jackie and the eaglets. The last 2 seasons have been bad which happens in nature.

What's this nest? From what it looked like she just laid that egg. I don't know who this couple is but I do know they need to build a new nest somewhere else. Or the eggs will freeze. Another thing where is the male? Normally, when a female wants a break she call out to the male. It's not normal after mating for a male to be that far away. All mammals have instincts and his instincts should kept him near the nest. I study more about this couple later; time to watch how Samson and Gabby!

In the Raven's defense they had almost 20 minutes of free time. No Shadow or Jackie guarding or incubating the egg. 😢 They just don't have luck. Didn't they loose both hatchling last year? I believe one fell out of the nest.

I've stopped watching this nest. Too difficult to watch. No eagles last season, and one loss the season before. Now this. Sad, but it's easier for my heart to watch mostly successful nests. This one has only disappointed and broken hearts. Not to mention the nest looks awful. Hardly any fluff. The parenting and nest skills here are...just too difficult to watch. Sorry.

I dont understand why she would leave the eggs unguarded for even a moment. Where was the male eagle? They usually take turns on the eggs. The ones I watched on the SWFEC never left the eggs along for a second.
