Big Bear Eaglet Death, Last Moments

Warning the video is graphic showing the last moments of the Big Bear Eaglet (Cookie) death. His brother Simba, watched and you could tell was concerned. Shadow flies in 3 different times. He stepped on Cookie a couple of times and looked to be covering him up. Mom flies in with a fish and appears to see if Cookie wants any after feeding Simba. It is very sad. Last year an eaglet also died in this nest about the same age. The weather has been very cold and snowy this year and no doubt played a role in why the eaglet died.

They take it out of the nest to band it, take it into a warmer space???, then return it to a nest where cold weather is still a factor...and people say that's not interfering much with nature...if you can't band them in the nest...stop the practice...

@@rajnbull I agree, they say they don't want to interfere, but they do just that, and it's all for the sake of "research", and "scientific data", but not to help the eaglets make it to fledgling...they state it cost too much to take the poor eaglet that perished from the nest, but they make sure after the birds leave the nest, it's treated for the next season to guard against disease, parasites, etc....HUH? Watching Cookie perish was too much for me...yea it's nature, but when there were people that could help, and did not...I'm done...no more cams for me.

I still think of Cookie , he is part of that nest, his home - forever.❤ I was so touched by Simba's refusal to let his sibling go.. Remember him jumping around holding Cookie weeks after ~ as if he was protecting him from being taken away by Mum or Dad. Wishing Simba all the best in the World for a young Eagle. Really hope they will be successful with a baby in 2021.🐱♏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🦅

I'am so sad for the lose of our baby Cookie :'( What is also sad is to watch the way the family deals with the death. Simba was confused & sad for his sibling and yes the P's did appear to try to feed and definitely cover Cookie up with sticks & some fluff. Love you little baby Cookie and will miss you so much. Fly high with the angels and soar high with the eagles little one.

At this point, no one knows why the Eaglet died. But here is what we DO know: 1. The Eaglet died on a cold morning after a snowfall. 2. The Eaglet died after it was banded by the zookeeper. I would be interested to know how this compares to last year.

It is disturbing that some commenters are so quick to blame the very people who have made it possible for us to view these birds in their natural habitat. And while it is somewhat less appealing to see Cookie lying there dead rather than moving about interacting with his brother and parents, I look forward to the day (hopefully that day will come - there are no guarantees) that Simba spreads his wings and flies from that nest for his first flight. If that day comes, for me that will be the miracle. Thank you to the providers of this live cam for making that possible.

I had a feeling something was wrong a while back when one of them was not feeding well and then yesterday....as the one baby just lay there not moving. this is very sad news. very sad. :( I cannot help but wonder if the shock of banding them have contributed to weakening them? I wonder. If obvious that the weather is a factor, why don't the caretakers step in to help out? The second baby does not look very strong now either. I wish man would not interfere with nature and if he does, then he needs to follow through to help. IT could also be something in the food they are getting. there are plastics in everything these days.

Dan the Man , after seeing the doctor take them down to be tagged not long before this happened, couldn’t he have given them a once over? The weather forecast was clearly showing that snow, rain and low temps were immediate. I watched them and local weather conditions almost the entire night before, and in knowing that plenty of eagles and eaglets have been treated and saved for various reasons, I’ve been wondering if something could have been done. That night I watched the mom struggle so much and captured a couple photos of it.

It was Simba and he was casting a pellet, very normal in birds of prey and a good sign of good health. They cast out the indigestibles from prey, like fur, feathers, scale, bone about 24 hrs after eating. Normal process at their age. Parents do it too.

Yes they will put grasses over the body and do the best they can to cover it. There will be no problem with the body. As it loses moisture it will just turn to dust and a pile of feathers. I have seen this happen on another nest with an eaglet the same age. Cookie will become part of the nest. They could try to remove it, but the body is probably too heavy right now. I believe he will just stay with the nest as I have seen others do in the past.

@Les Moore I think I was right to begin with. I just looked (6/1/2019 13:40:00) and the carcass is covered with flies. Flies are attracted to the methane from the rotting flesh, which is likely pretty ripe by now. They're laying eggs; so, maggots will follow soon.

I do not believe hypothermia was the cause of Cookie's death. He was behaving abnormally the day prior to the snow flurry, turning away during feedings for most of the day. Also noted was Cookie's constant whines consisting of 5-7 chirps every minute or so.. Is this normal? Cookie's death might be a result of having been accidentally stepped on and fatally pierced by Shadow's or Jackie's talon the day preceding the night of the snow flurry. Cookie whimpered when this happened and could have succumbed to internal bleeding which is a slow and cruel death. We miss you, Cookie. Stay strong, Simba!

The eaglet was less vigorous and less robust than its sibling the entire time it was alive. I am surprised it lived as long as it did. It obviously was feeding some time, because it was as big as its sibling, but most of the time when I saw feeding going on, and I watched a lot, it seldom fed. There is speculation that it had a respiratory ailment, possibly pneumonia, and the hypothermia then did it in.

Birds are very sensitive animals to stressful situations. And in this case there were many factors for stress: Very cold weather, abrupt changes in the type of food (Shadow brought a bird to the nest, and a little later brought squirrel),ringing chicks and again bad weather. And all these factors occurred almost all together within 24 hours. These professionals in their field should have postponed the ringing or not at all do it because of the weather situation this year. They only added stress to the birds. Cookie even lost the power of speech when he saw a man in the nest. In the following days, Cookie behaved very restlessly and often spread his wings wide and shouted loudly when his parents flew up to the nest with a fish or a stick. He had never shouted like that before, but only squeaked quietly with his brother. Often stressful factors can lead birds to panic and they can become alert. His appetite soon deteriorated and he almost did not eat. A hungry body cannot produce energy to keep warm. Simba, after ringing, remained calm and ate well and slept. His immunity and nervous system were stronger. Stress has three phases: The first phase is characterized by a short-term anxiety. There are changes in the lymphatic system, reduced muscle tone, changes in body temperature and blood pressure, may develop an inflammatory process. The second phase is resistant. When it occurs, the pathological processes in the body normalize. Birds gradually adapt to stressful situations, and the level of tension is overcome. The third phase is exhaustion. This stage begins when the bird organism failed and did not adapt to stress factors during the second phase. It is in the third stage that irreversible changes can occur, ultimately leading to the death of the bird. It is possible that Kuki died of pneumonia, but a lot of stress factors that piled on in such a short period helped in the development of the disease.

I totally agree. So much stress and trauma in a short time. I think it was bad timing for the banding in the middle of the storms when they were trying to recover. Probably overwhelmed him on top of the weather situation.

I immediately challenged the pneumonia as being brought on by the stress of banding. It was refuted. After reading this, I am back to my original opinion. Last year after banding the Channel Island eaglets, one of them took weeks to fully recover. If it ever truly did...

@@debt4717 - Poor Cookie had thrown up a weird slimy pellet a couple of days before banding, and wasn't eating very little if at all then. One would think a board certified avian vet would've ordered a basic panel (liver, kidney, white cells, red cells) - to do that isn't very expensive - gov.'t could easily afford to pay out. And why they didn't do a necropsy is odd other than others saying it was hypothermia. Stress in any avian species can easily lead to death if they're in a weakened state. Cookie was trying to breathe at the end of his short life and couldn't. I'm still so upset over it. - Stephanie

Cookie had been sick for at least a week from continued cold and wet weather conditions. If humans had added a tarp or whatever, maybe the parents would have freaked out and abandoned the nest, or maybe the Eaglets would have broken a wing when later trying to fledge. It's indeed very sad for everyone to experience the loss of Cookie, and reminds us of the pain of losing others we love. Let's allow the Eagle family to deal with their loss in their own way without us intervening to steal the corpse just to make ourselves feel better. He is a part of the history of their nest. All of us who continue living will experience grief in our lives, but we must embrace the joy whenever possible as Cookie did. Bless all of you who were touched by the life of Cookie. Hug someone, take a break from the cams, and find the strength to keep going. ❤️🦅❤️ SED (sweet Eagle dreams) May the spirit of Cookie fly high and free in a bright, warm sky!

Cookie unknowiingly sacrificed himself for his brother. The night he passed , Cookie was left to the outside of Jackie in the rain. Simba and Cookies usual placement was together between Jackies legs. Jackie would take the blunt of it all like a wet mop. That night Simba unknowingly had the front entry to Jackies belly blocked off to Cookie. *3 storms one after another between snow ice and drenching rain, could have been prevented* with a shelter built years prior on the side of the nest not interferring with sunlight. There are plenty of good minds out there by students that could configure a shelter the way the bird associations have done for other species of birds like the GBS Peregrine falcons in La Crosse Wisconsin on the cliffs. Maybe a wind break. Also Big Bear is a odd high altitude location associated with less oxygen exchange through egg shells and its not very advantagious for egg hatching. I think a 1/4 canopy could be built over, to the side, or off the edge of the nest for bad weather. and made of natural branches and form fitted wood. I dont know of a higher spot in all the USA. Theyre quite disadvantaged being lewered by water to stay at BIG BEAR lake generations ago to present. Because its a man made dam from the late 1800's and again its at very high altitude (significantly hight then DENVER ) and surrounded by DESERT. They dont have the will to fly away with the water of the lake present filled with fish and fowel. These beautiful Eagles deserve a break and partial shelter could make up for this problem of harsh weather.
