Big Bend National Park - Hikes and Camping

I said you needed climbing gear for the closed canyon trail. thats not really true obviously as we didnt have climbing gear, but if you want to make it all the way to the end you do. We made it probably 80% of the way only to have to turn back at that narrow drop off. the sign at the beginning tells you to turn around if you can't make it past any part safely, but they do call it an easy to moderate trail which I find funny. its only easy up until it gets too hard hah.

@@integraloutdoors That is one beautiful park. I highly recommend the window trail but humping the hill back up is really a tough one. That area has black bear in it.

I thought camp fires were prohibited at Big Bend year round?

The fire was at a private campground called the goat pens in Terlingua that allowed fires.

It was a lot of fun, I went to Moab in October too but didn't edit a video. Going back in April and maybe I'll make a video of that showing the Maze. The maze is a back country area of Utah that is very far from any services.

Great video. I'm in MN too and heading that way June 29th. First night at croton springs. At 4:38, which road were you on? I have the goat pens marked on the map...thanks for the great review.

I believe it was Old Maverick Road on the west side. It's a minimum maintenance road that goes from near the west entrance to Santa Elena Canyon. I would recommend not taking it unless you have a truck or SUV tho. My video didn't show the worst part of it. It's not terrible but we cars with low clearance might scrape the ground or get damage on a few portions. Majority of it was just dirt road but a few parts you go into dried river beds.

I remember seeing a car or two on the trail and after a few of the parts I questioned if they were able to get through it without scraping too badly or even getting damaged haha.

Did you have to air down any at the rough road areas? I drive a stock Subaru Outback. Wondering if my vehicle would clear the 4x4 roads and the high clearance required roads?

Old Maverick road on the west side was the only low-maintenance road I went on and an outback would probably be fine but from memory there might be a few parts you scrape bottom. You wouldn't need to air down though I don't think. It was mostly a typical dirt road with just a few rough dry riverbed crossings. I can't remember what the other popular roads are called that off roaders go on but from what I've seen they are not too difficult but you might want to check out other people's videos to see what they are like because from what I remember it was mostly people with Jeeps or trucks. since I went with my parents I didn't want to subject them to five or six hour long rough drives lol.

I think there was one gas station in Terlingua, and there is one in the park at Panther Junction.

I’m going here next month, is there any worry about immigrants confronting you or breaking into vehicles?

No, the guy who owned the campground we stayed at said he hadn't seen illegal immigrants since the 80s haha. The region is very isolated, it wouldn't be a good place for legal or illegal immigrants to come thru there. Pretty much only saw the few locals and tourists. What might surprise people is the locals seem very anti border wall. The campground owner talked about how before 9/11 they had a yearly border meeting where US and Mexican people came together at the border for a "neighborhood" party. It's nothing like the stuff you see on TV at troublesome areas along the border.

Thanks for pointing that out. A lot of people in other areas have no first hand information and worry about a problem that doesn't exist... for the most part.

People on the border don’t have a problem with immigrants, it’s people competing for wages in deep Texas that don’t like illegals. But I’m not anti immigrant either, in fact I’m for reform.
