Great video!! I am headed to Big Bend beginning of April. Have you ever hiked Big Bend during that time? If so, what type of weather should I expect during the day?
@TheNotLostNomad
@TheNotLostNomad 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have never been during April before...but I’ll be there at the end of April this year. So expect cool temperatures at night but hot during the day...Big Bend weather is funny...the temps could read mid 60s but feel like 90 degrees when you are hiking in the sun. So expect heat but bring something to keep you warm when the temp drops after the sun goes down. Enjoy your trip!

Wow. My wife and I were there just 4 days before you guys. We actually did Long Meadows - SR - ER route. It took lot longer than your route. However, we did not want to carry 30lbs through Pinnacle trail. We added Emory Peak on the way back which was our mistake. I forgot to bring water filter and ran out of water right after Emory Peak. We barely made down while dehydrated. The view of sunrise and sunset at SR/ER are amazing. We are planning to make another return trip. We camped at EC2 and BC4. We also added Lost Maples and St Elena on 3rd day. Lost Maples was very good 1 day hike trip. We ran into many black bears (4) as well. I also saw glimpse of a cougar near JC trail which I thought was a cat. it looked lot smaller from 50 yards or so. lol

wow, that's crazy! It sounds like you guys had an amazing trip. And it's funny that you guys ran out of water after Emory because I did the very same thing a few years ago. I enoyed the video. Great that y'all camped overnight & got to see the sun set, sunrise...I was at the Park in January. Enjoyesd the river, canyon, night sky (smal stars, Milki Way...) I am going back in April .What do you think about completeing the loop countet clockwise? Starting from the basin - Laguna Medows Trail, Colina Trail, South -West Rim Trail, Boot Canyon Trail then Pinacles Trail & come Chiosos Bsin. This way the Pinacles Trail will be down hill. This will be about 12-mile loop
@TheNotLostNomad

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Big Bend is one of my favorite parks! As for direction, I’ve done both and I really prefer going at it clockwise. To me the views are more interesting and you can enjoy them while you are fresh on the trail. I also prefer climbing the steeper trails and going down on the more gradual side...tends to be easier on my knees. The Laguna side is great but to me the other side is much more interesting.

May I ask when this was? We're going first week of December, trying to get an idea for our weather
@TheNotLostNomad
@TheNotLostNomad 3 жыл бұрын
This trip was in late October...for December it can be hard to tell what the weather will do. It could be warm and sunny or you could have snow...it’s really hard to judge. Typically the weather reports will report accurate temperatures for the lower desert by Panther Junction, but it v I’ll be 20 degrees cooler up in the mountains. We had the opposite on this trip...temperatures were in the mid 40s at the top and 27 degrees by the time we made it down to the bottom. I’d say just watch the weather and have a backup plan to stay in the warmer lower desert if it gets dicey up top. Hope that helps!

Many years ago a buddy and I did multi-day hike from the opposite direction. When we came to the Emory Peak trail we couldn’t find the bear boxes. Being young and dumb, we just took our whole packs with us to the top. On the way back down we found them as soon as we made the turn to the main trail. Every time I see that trail head I remember hauling our way-too-heavy packs up that mile.

Unfortunately there isn’t any other way to get to the South Rim...it takes some work to get all the way up there. I’d probably suggest the Lost Mine Trail. It’s about 5 miles and is pretty mild. The views will give you a taste of what the south rim is like. Enjoy your trip!

Thank you! You'll love this hike! The first two times I went were both in February. The weather is great during the day but it gets pretty cold at night. No, unfortunately it was completely dry...there were lots of pools of water but none that I’d be comfortable filtering from. Really no other option other than carrying enough water with you.

@@TheNotLostNomad very nice! I have to GoPro Hero 7 Black but I always keep it on the “fish eye” setting which comes out a little funny on playback. I might need to turn the setting off lol. Great content though! The South Rim is an incredible adventure

@@TimHillyer1 , Thank you! definitely change it to linear and you’ll never go back to the wide angle. I used to only use the wide angle in my early videos and I wish I could go back and reshoot those trips. Thank you for watching!

Daughter & I just back from hitting those same trails in the Chisos! Up Pinnacles, through Boot Canyon, camped at Colima, hit South Rim, Emory Peak, Laguna Meadows trails. Some of the most beautiful sunsets each night, and star gazing afterwards! Clear skies and hot during the day, needed fleece at night and this was June! Missed seeing any bears. Thanks for the Vid, great stuff!
