In this video we share hiking and camping in Big Bend National Park and things to do in Lajitas, Texas including glamping in bubbles, meeting the goat mayor of Lajitas and enjoying the boardwalk!
Hiking the South Rim Via Pinnacles and Boot Rim Trails (And Emory Peak):
- Distance: 12.7 miles
- Difficulty: Hard & Strenuous
- Traffic: Heavy
The South Rim trail in Big Bend is approximately 13 miles long and the trailhead is at the Chisos Basin near the visitors center and trade store. This trail climbs into the Chisos Mountains to the South Rim which offers incredible views of thousands of miles of desert and mountains. We opted not to climb to Emory Peak this time as we were trying to get to our campsite early. We chose camp site #4 at the top of the South Rim because it was roughly the halfway point of the trail. We go through the contents and process of preparing a military MRE and watch the sunset over the desert.
Things to do in and around Lajitas, Texas:
1. Glamping at The Summit at Big Bend: We stayed in a Summit Dome which was a cozy 20FT dome. It sleeps up to 4 people and had a comfy king size bed, couch & sleeper sofa, air conditioning, heat, coffee-maker, mini-fridge, and an outdoor fire pit. They also have stargazing bubble tents available for rent. summitbigbend.com/pages/summi...
2. Meet the Goat Mayor: You will not be disappointed! Feed the Mayor his favorite snack (he loves moon-pies and wine coolers). He’ll guzzle up the cold drink and gobble up the snack and be eager for more!
3. Explore the Boardwalk at Lajitas Resort: Stop in for a cold drink at the Thirsty Goat Saloon, grab a bite or shop at one of the boutique stores!
Wilson’s Tips for Big Bend:
1. Buy the book! If you’re planning on hiking in Big Bend, we highly recommend you pick up the Hiking in Big Bend National Park, Falcon Guide. It’s loaded with tons of great information from detailed directions and trailhead information to maps and elevation gain charts.
2. Pre order a sandwich for your hike at the Lajitas General Store! They’ll pack it to go which makes for an easy and delicious meal on your hike!
3. Stop by the Chisos Basin Store for any last minute items needed!
