You shared that you wish you acclimated longer but never shared how long you spent in Cusco prior to the Inca trail. How many days would you recommend to acclimate before starting? Thanks!
@Castaways_Travel11 күн бұрын
Good question! I think that’s going to depend heavily on the individual though. Unfortunately there’s probably no black and white answer for this one. Some people are affected by it, some aren’t. Some experience it mildly while it wrecks others. It just depends. We landed in Cusco on Saturday night and our trek began on Sunday so we literally spent next to no time acclimating at all. We also didn’t have the luxury of being able to vacation for that many days in 2022, which is another reason our turnaround was so quick. I would say at least 2 days, 3 if you are able - if I absolutely had to place a number on it. Definitely not one night though! If you’re concerned about altitude sickness you may want to ask your doctor about diamox or look into other prescriptions that treat mountain sickness as well. And make sure you grab some coca leaves or gummies before your trek while you’re in town.

Did you take all of your luggage on your back - as I'm noticing large back packs on some hikers. Or do you have a day back and the "sherpas" take one backpack and you take your day packs?
@Castaways_Travel2 ай бұрын
No, we left our luggage at our hotel. Which is why we recommend staying at the same place on the front and back end of your trek. Most places will store your baggage for free while you’re on the trail, especially if you are returning as a guest again. On the trek we each had a small day pack filled with immediate essentials: water, snacks, layers, socks, bug spray etc. The porters can carry up to 7kg of weight for each person. Keep in mind if you rent gear from AE like the sleeping pad, sleeping bag, pillow - it only leaves about half or 3.5kg remaining for your own personal gear of your choosing. And you will not have access to it until you reach your campsite at the end of every day. Hope that helps!

Can you buy a card specifically for the train or public transportation you can just load money on or is just tickets?
@Castaways_Travel3 ай бұрын
If you’re talking about for NY Metro public transportation then yes you can still buy a physical metro card and put money on it for swipes on the subway and MTA buses. If you’re talking about the NJ Transit I have no idea, you’ll have to refer to the NJ Transit website for more information.

Your comments say that for the M60, you pay on the bus, does this mean you swipe your metro card when you get on, and the unlimited metro card can be used for both buses AND subway?
@Castaways_Travel3 ай бұрын
You can pay by card, or OMNY when you get on board or you can swipe your metro card at the bus stop kiosks before getting on to get a receipt for proof of payment.
@albundy062 ай бұрын
Or you can just get on for free. If you're buying a metro card, just use that. Or use tap to pay on your phone. Or your physical card. You can use them all on NYC busses and subway. And use the same payment method for all your travels. If you're going to be using it a bunch and want to save money. It's something like 12 rides or something like that in any seven day period is the max. After that, they're all free. It basically replaces the unlimited metro card. To be honest I don't even know if they still sell those things. But if you tap with your phone, then use your physical card, then a metro card.. they're separate and don't all go towards your 12 or maybe 13 rides or whatever. Basically there's a maximum amount of money you will be charged in a 7 day period using omny with the same payment type.
@Castaways_Travel2 ай бұрын
@@albundy06 They still sell metro cards I just used an unlimited one a few weeks ago. Buying an unlimited card is the same price as the OMNY deal. They’re just different methods of payment and come down to personal preference. All these options are explained in the video and description.
@albundy062 ай бұрын
@@Castaways_Travel Not quite. You have to pay a dollar to get the metro card. Other than that it's the same. I'd suggest anyone coming into town to not waste the time and the dollar on getting a metro card unless they don't want to use their phones or other tap to pay methods. Which of course there's nothing wrong with not wanting to use tap to pay methods. But if you're ok with using them. Skip metro cards all together.

Is it safe to cross the border and drive to Guadalajara?
@Castaways_Travel4 ай бұрын
This question is far too complex of a question with way too many factors to answer with a blanket yes or no, but there are many things you can do to be more safe and less at risk. First, I would suggest you follow the Facebook page “On the Road in Mexico.” This page is full of helpful resources with up to date conditions of the roadways and much more from reliable resources and residents of Mexico. In my experience, choosing the safest crossing available to you as well as the best time to cross, driving on the best roadways available and only driving during the daytime are all key elements to traveling as safely as possible in Mexico. I myself have never encountered danger on the roadways in Mexico but many others have had not so lucky experiences. Like I said, follow that page on Facebook and do your research and you should be fine.
