In this episode of BadAss Builds we take a look at the brainchild of Rory Irish, owner of Moab Motorsports. TrailMater started life as a 1982 K30 1Ton Truck that he chopped up to make a rock crawler and then decided he would make it a tow truck to perform recoveries in some of the toughest off-road trails in America located in Moab Utah. This Off-Road Recovery truck comes complete with 6 winches, onboard welder, fully locked front and rear axle and custom built recovery trailer for really sticky situations. Look up #trailmater on instagram for some awesome recovery pics.

All is answered in the first sentence; Trail Mater was originally built as a rock crawler, then it morphed into a tow-truck! But, anyway, it's the phenomenal, almost other-worldly skills that Rory and his crew bring to the table that makes this the premier recovery vehicle on KZbin!

One of the most humble people I've met, that does what he does because he likes it. Doesn't price gouge and often charges too little. All in a world, that's built around the JEEP (Just Empty Every Pocket), and a costly sport of rock crawling and trail fun. He's real... and he's GOOD people. I support Moab Motorsports often, whether it's a $5 shift linkage bushing, a $100 track bar weld, a $50 pitman arm... oh, the list goes on. There are others, but none like Rory Irish. I hope he continues to be the GO TO in Moab for everyone's off-road needs.

We typically head to Moab every year. I've come to know Joe at Twisted since I rent out there. I had asked Joe about him. He said, "Yeah, stop down there and see him. He's really nice." I stopped in there this past June and chatted with Rory and some of his guys. He's super nice and was very accommodating to a fan of his channel. We talked for probably 20 minutes. Oh, and something you can't really notice from videos, he's gotta be 6'5" or 6'6". He fills a doorway when he walks thru it. lol. But, more like the Gentle Giant. If you make it to Moab, stop in and see him. #trailmater

Rory is the best driver out there, no one controls momentum like rory. And trail mater is simply badass. A shorty dually is as good as it gets. Rory can roll the toughest trails smoother than nearly any rig while towing a broke ass $100,000 jeep. Im a fj80 guy but anything that can roll rocks is good with me.

@ 15:30 the double standards with insurance companies... The one we have here is if you have winter tires you get a discount, but they don't care if you use them in the summer even though you have reduced handling etc... Not as safe as non winter tires. And... You can literally buy a car and insure it with no inspection. And they will give you 3rd part liability. (If the vehicle is over 10 years old). If you want full comprehensive coverage you need to get an inspection done at a certified mechanic. If the vehicle doesn't pass they inspection you need to correct all deficiencies before 30 days or the cancel your insurance on the vehicle and won't insure it in the future 🙄 What a gong show.

After seeing several of your videos, I wonder why you dont use a sling like older wreckers use just as a last back stop from a disabled vehicle from sliding into you. I see distance between vehicles is an advantage for hills, but a last catch seems like it would eliminate one less worry. I used a sling on hundreds of cars back in day, but those were on pavement and gravel.
@MaxNafeHorsemanship
@MaxNafeHorsemanship 2 жыл бұрын
I used to think the same thing, but he's not the only one. I'm sure there is a reason, and from all the vids I have watched, it seems there is no need even though it doesn't make sense.

Going up hills almost straight up with a sling would be a horrible idea. It would make it way to heavy and flip his rig backwards.

@@JohnnyJ50f I had a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the exhaust broke off where it comes out of the rear of the muffler. I drove it to him and he welded get back together at a cost of $273. I reluctantly paid and drove away only to find the exhaust was laying against the polyurethane gas tank. I returned to him with my problem and he gave me considerable grief before repairing it to my liking. I drove away and it still was not far enough away from the gas tank and melted a hole in the polyurethane tank on the 1500 mile ride home...
@JohnnyJ50f
@JohnnyJ50f 3 жыл бұрын
@@OverlandGeneration Interesting story. For your exhaust to "break off" at the rear of the muffler, it had to be in poor shape... right? None the less, sorry to hear about such an issue as Rory is top notch. Hence why I asked... if HE welded it or HE did the actual work. You didn't answer that. And, if he was the shop you went to, or if it was prior to Rory owning Moab Motorsports (He's only owned it for +/- 4yrs). Lastly, isn't there a thin metal guard/heat shield between exhaust and fuel tank on the Cherokee? There was on mine ('95 ZJ)
@ToddKing
@ToddKing 2 жыл бұрын
@@OverlandGeneration I think there is a whole bunch you are leaving out of the story or the story is even all or mostly made up. You didn't say when this was done but I know of no world where it would cost $273 to weld exhaust back together. My guess is that a new muffler and some pipe was installed. And like Johnny said there is normally a heat shield on the tank and even if there weren't I cannot imagine the exhaust melting it unless it were touching it and maybe not even then depending on where it was in the system. 20+ years ASE certified auto tech
