One of bell hooks’ most famous works has to be Ain’t I a Woman which was published in the late 90s and had a massive impact on intersectional feminism. I would definitely suggest reading it to anyone as I think it’s important to read texts that have heavily influenced modern day feminism!

As a Sedaris lover, I feel compelled to say that the audio versions of his books are excellent and even more compelling than reading the physical book imo. The author narrates, and the stories are delivered as if he is performing them in stage (as he often is).

This, yes! Love his audio versions and the nuance in his voice, pauses, etc. Adds so much to the book for me!

Eeeeeeee, I also picked Collected Regrets of Clover this month! It felt like a sign from the universe; death doula is a career change I've been seriously considering lately, bc I may not be cut out for the mortuary science degree track (sad face). I'm 26 chapters in and it is squeezing my heart in the best ways, I've underlined and tabbed quite a bit, feel pretty confident calling it one of my favorites of the year. AHHHHHH. David Sedaris has my heart forever and always. I remember reading the chalky cover one while riding the school bus in my hometown many years ago. He is a rare comedic gem and I love hearing the world through his perspective. Months ago, possibly years, I remember screenshoting a passage from All About Love that a friend from high school shared, so this feels like another sign from the universe to bump that up my TBR! From one cat mom to another, happy mother's day! ❤️

Belonging: A Culture of Place by bell hooks was so good! I just read it for a paper I wrote for school and absolutely loved the way she combined storytelling with social theory. It's a quick read but leaves you with such interesting ideas about how people feel (or don't feel) a sense of belonging in the spaces they live and how racism, patriarchy, and capitalism all impact it. Going to start All About Love this week :) So excited to hear what you think of it!

Book about older characters: Three Things You Should Know About Elsie. It’s a slow cozy mystery that explores the present of old peoples lives who live in an assisted living community as well as our MCs past. Her past is the mystery but it intertwines with the present in such a calm slightly chilling way. I think you might like it?? Honorable Mention: Britt-Marie Was Here- an older uptight woman looses everything and takes a job (to feel purpose) in a rundown town. That is all I knew going in and I loved it.

I also recently bought bell hooks all about love. It's been on my tbr forever and my city was having an independent bookstore day so I had to go and give my love to all my favorite shops! And so I bought a different book (or two) at each shop. The Bandit Queens (the edition with the 👀), the first book in the Poppy War - R.F. When you discussed The Invisible Kingdom it nagged my brain to mention Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. As someone that is chronically ill I would never ever want to give unsolicited medical advice or to ever presume what you have discussed with doctors. I only wanted to mention it because I had never heard of it and it was through social media that I came across it. As is the case with so many of us, what you are experiencing with the healtcare system resonates very deeply with me. I have watched your videos for months and taken so much comfort in your content. Thank you for making a very relatable, cozy corner of the Internet. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on To Battersea Park. Hi! First of all, thank you for creating. Your videos are my favorite to watch; they always make me feel happy and cozy. You are such a sunshine of a person❤. I just started reading this year, so for now I am reading older books that I missed. Therefore, I haven't even heard about any of the books in this video, but I am adding some to my tbr list, which I can't wait to dive into. Honestly, You are such a motivation for me. I have read 15 books this year so far, and even though I could be sad because I am so very behind with all the new releases, as you always say, I need to go at my own pace. And that's what I do; if at least you believe in all of your viewers, including myself, I will be motivated to continue walking my path. Also, I understand the struggle of living in a country where getting books that you want is not easy. I live in a small country called Lithuania, and you either have to wait for the book to be translated or struggle with shipping. Anyway, I guess I just wanted to say thank you. I don't write comments often, but when I do, it becomes an essay. Sorry for that. Lots of love❤

All of hooks writing is mind-opening, even if some are very dense. And they’re valuable rereads, cause I’ve found, as I got older, her ideas become more and more clear to me. “The will to change” in particular is a dense one but worth grappling with in all the ways. A book with an older protagonist you may enjoy (if you haven’t read it already since it was a huge hit some years ago) is “the Elegance of the Hedgehog” which was translated from french. It’s very philosophical, slow paced and not at all plot centric and takes its time to dive into two personalities: an older woman named Renée and her neighbor who is young girl named Paloma and how they find kindred spirits and support in each other. As for bookish sins: I’ve been good! 😂 I only made some (4) pre-orders last week for authors and series I want to support and have not bought any thing since then. Quite proud of myself, honestly. 😤

i can't wait to hear you discuss All About Love! in my most recent reading wrap up video, i explained that the book was a bit too dense and dry for me to easily absorb (mostly a problem with my expectations, i had been anticipating it might be more of a personal memoir and was surprised by all the citations and analysis) but the experience definitely left me wanting to learn more about bell hooks and perhaps find other books by this author that i'd be more compatible with... this channel always brings such a fresh perspective to books that hurt my brain, so i'm looking forward to learning from someone else's point of view!
