Big Boy 4014 Polar Express to Cheyenne, WY

Big Boy's final run of 2019 was the leg from a stop at Greeley, CO www.cmrm.org/e... to the steam shop in Cheyenne, WY. After 3 major tours across the UPRR system the final hours are like the Polar Express. Departing Greeley the Big Boy storms north to Eaton then charges thru Ault Then off to greet the frozen fans waiting for him at the Pierce water tower after knocking down the miles into Nunn. The Whistle for that crossing is so strong that it knocks some snow off the Quonset hut as it passes the elevator there! Folks have lined the the bridge on 85 to see this Big Boy roll by. Full steam north to the last town in Colorado along these tracks and well off any main roads Carr, Colorado. Then catch up to the mighty Big Boy rolling along Lincoln way eastbound into Cheyenne, WY announcing his arrival at the Cutler Road crossing. Almost there the final bridge, as 4014 slow rolls over Ames Ave. But before the 4014 leaves the mainline for the final time this year they take off of the freight cars and dig out the switch. The 4-8-8-4 can see the steam shop but the TV crew needs to get their report for the 5 o'clock news. www.wyomingnew... Only to find that the final grade crossing is so packed with snow the steam crew has to dig out just one more (time lapse) before the sun goes down and the snow starts to fly.

Imagine being alive in the early part of the 1900’s when steam was all that ran the rails. Hearing that whistle and seeing these steam beasts every day. To see 4014 now after all these years is truly a testament to the people that built them originally and to the people that breathed life into it again. American power still exists. It’s on the rails in this video.

That reminds me, I need to reassemble my Big Boy, it had a cracked gear in the lead truck assembly (Athearn Genesis first run), be careful buying a used one of that production run, they have issues with the nylon gears cracking. And make sure you have silicone lubricant where it needs to be, they come pretty dry from the factory.

The big boy is the world largest steam engine and it is also the strongest (7000hp)normally I said that the c.o h8 allegehnnys are more powerful but they are not in service or life also they were good for freight but not good like big boys or challengers cause speed big boys can have a maximum speed of 80 mph and c.o allegehnnys can have 60/50 mph and speed was very important in the 40/50/60 or ww2 and also n.w y6bs they are stronger than big boys but they are not alive and also they are so slowly 45/50 mph cause of its small wheels so big boys are better for fright and I'm sorry for my writing

A y6b is best at pulling a really long consist up a grade at low speeds, They are about the same in horsepower but the big difference comes In with tractive effort, their pulling power is that in compound mode, it has 152,206lbs, but in simple mode, it has 166,000lbs so yeah, the big boys where better at high speed and big trains but the y6bs where better at slow speeds but heavy trains up steeper mountains, I like both engines a lot tho but kinda wish a y6b would be put in to service but there are no more examples of that so the y6a 2156 would do. Actually, I prefer the class A 1218 to be rebuilt more than the y6a.

Fall Apollo 4014 did indeed pass thru Arkansas. Sorry you missed it. No plans have been announced yet. You’ll have to go to the UP website and register for updates.

For more braking capacity , as they were routed east out Cheyenne when 4014 tied up, they came west just to go east, so they were detoured by a less direct route.
