The next chapter in the return home of the worlds largest steam locomotive. We follow Big Boy 4014 from Salt Lake City to Wyoming in the company of thousands of rail fans. The people add to the fun as we climb Weber Canyon and Echo Canyon.

the yard in North Ogden was BIG BOY's home base back when he was built. BIG BOY pulled trains out of North Ogden through Weber Canyon and over Echo Pass to Evenston then through Alta Tunnel to Green River. after a stop in Green River to fill up with fuel BIG BOY went past Table Rock and through the Red Rocks to Laramie. at Laramie BIG BOY got his final servicing then into his kingdom Sherman Hill itself. under power BIG BOY used Track 1 to Hamossa Tunnel but today BIG BOY uses Track 3 since Track 1 is a steep 2% grade when the trip is over BIG BOY pulls into his stall in the roundhouse in his home town of Cheyenne the location of Steam Shop. BIG BOY has not been to Steam Shop in 50 years so it is sort of a home coming for him and the citizens of Cheyenne are waiting for him all of them worked on BIG BOY back in the day or heard legends and they will be excited when they see BIG BOY pull into Steam Shop Yard in Cheyenne.

It's just sad to think that steam engines that helped start American transportation are becoming more rare. With new advances in rail technology, the use for steam engines is not as high as it was back in the day... So when people see a giant steam engine like this that was built a long time ago, I they are living in that period of history, and history comes alive. Can the world at least keep a good number of steam engines like this? Keep the history of the world alive through these gianta

HI! Its Richard Band music from Smart Sound. LOVE IT. You need to pay them for it on their web site. Just buying one is expensive! Like 50 bucks! But you can then use it forever, (buy out) BUT you cant let others use it. AND they filter, if you use their stuff, it takes them about 5 minutes to catch it. The way I buy music is buying 10 CDs at a time. For about 600 bucks! But that makes the CD cost about 60, so about 6 bucks per cue. Better than 50! But 600 bucks!!!!!!

Yes, Rob is a bit over the top. But he owns Santa Barbra so I guess he can afford it. Hes very cool. Bought the ranch (Rancho Margerita.) to grow grapes and make wine but they won't let him because its a Indian site, so he built a railroad instead. I like the railroad more. those are Disneyland cars! Boy are some people pissed they sold him 4 cars. Whatever.

Don't get the wrong idea, my Bride enjoys "O" scale Lionel-go figure! I lost track of the Big Boy once it left the park in Southern California. Im a steam guy too. I see diesels every time I get called to work. But if you have to be in a diesel.... C45AH (any of them 5500s to 2700s) is the only way to go. SD70 T-4 3000s are okay....but SD70ACs are crap! Even the heritage units! (Paint is the only thing good on those) On the Big Boy.. I got to be the train a ahead of the Big Boy leaving Colton in 2019. ( after the Pomona Chapter trip to Colton/ Cajon pass trip.) I was going to Yuma on a manafest train. I was clearing the way! Sooo many people!!! Some may have video of my train in San Timetao canyon. Lots of people were already set up and I'm sure they did test shots! I got to Yuma 2 hours ahead of 4014 and was able to video it going across the Colorado River. But then I went back to my room...it was like 100°f already in Yuma. Sam

The Golden spike should have included SP4449 on the west side, instead of two UP locomotives ( although both can be there ). But UP is not a fan of anyone else's steam! I don't think the daylight has ever run on UP or former SP except on interchange to other non UP tracks. Sad.

Mr. Toy Man, Look at any stack train that rolls along. Count the number of containers on that train and that's the number of semi's that are taken out of interstate transportation. It's cheaper to bring sand off the Cumberland Plateau than it is to truck it in, so yes trains are busier than they've ever been. There are a lot of short lines around the big class I railroads don't do a lot of little lines.

Small ups and downs but mostly very busy
@Romans--bo7br
@Romans--bo7br 6 жыл бұрын
Mike Lcml5c...... You Almost "sound like" someone who thinks that All semi's and trucks in general should be off the road... are you? The containers do NOT represent semi's taken off the road... and Why should they be? Those containers are off of, or going to the docks to and from China (mostly) and other global destinations. The trains are fine for large bulk movements, but when an in-country shipper needs a load picked up and on its way to his customer pronto... they don't call the railroads, they call brokers to send a semi, and it will be at their dock loading and on its way within hours... not days or weeks later. You cannot put rails and loading facilities for them at every business, it is totally unfeasible and impossible to do so.... so what's the big deal about getting the semi's off the roads, that some people seem bent on as their life's mission? There is Not One single solitary thing that you own or eat, that was not transported by trucks.... they're an absolute necessity to the daily operation and survival of this.... and Every other country in the world. Don't get me wrong, I love trains (especially Steam and 1st Generation Diesels) and not only come from a long line of railroaders in my family, but worked on a class 1 (train crew) railroad years ago, myself..... but trucks are a very definite, necessary and integral part of our overall transportation system here in the US and every other country in the world.

4:42 Obviously the large number is the locomotive's road number, 4014. Below that however, there is 4-8-8-4 (the wheel configuration)... But what's the rest? 4-8-8-4-1-68 (23¾ 23¾ / 32) 540MB *UPDATE* I did some digging... Still have no idea what the 1 is. 68 is the diameter if the driver wheels in inches! 23¾ is the Cylinder diameter in inches. Wow... I guess it's repeated, because there are two sets. Makes sense. 32 is the stroke of the piston The 540MB... Still not sure. Closest number I can find is 540,000 pounds of weight on the drivers (adhesive weight). Don't know what the M or B mean, if that's the case.
