When each of our children are born, we give them a Bible verse. Joshua's is Joshua 1:9. Sarah's is Genesis 21:1. Caleb's is Numbers 14:24. We already have one picked out for Baby No. 4.

And does it work? I think that what verojia meant bz sazing you do not need to do that, because by doing that you offset his awe with the new person in the house with a material thing. It is "early-onsetting" of trading human affection for things. There are other bonding ways to prevent that and you do not need to "buy" the kid. It is like teaching them to seek for relief of their "confused" emotions with consumerism instead of teaching them to embrace and love the new person in the house...

I think it was good that you gave him a present, when I was born, apparently, I gave my older sister a dollhouse. If you think about it the older sibling is usually very young and lots of presents are being given to the new baby so it is only fair. :) Good on you!

I also thought it strange that he hardly had a chance to look at her before they were trying to lure him away with a car ... like they're teaching him the importance of material things over family ties. Possibly they are one of those germ conscious families, and didn't want him too close to the baby.

The purpose of the car was to make him feel important after the arrival of a new member of the family and to create a bond between him and the baby by letting him think the present came from her (a cute gesture in my opinion). The timing may have been a little off, but I won't attribute it to materialism!
