More power burns more fuel in some situations also
@jnk266 жыл бұрын
More power requires more fuel. If you only pull 80k gross. You shouldn't need 500hp. I am pulling 140k on almost flat ground and I have 500hp/1850lbft. Gets 2.2km/L(5.2mpg us/6.2mpg imp). More power is nice, I drove gravel truck for four years I liked the 450hp trucks better than the 550 and 600hp trucks. Same roads, same 20,000kg loads. The 450hp trucks did the same number of loads in the same time, but used 50-75L(15-20G) less everyday. With fuel at $1.40/L(2012-13) That's a huge difference over a year $1.40/L x 50L x 5 days x $350 x 52wks is $18200 a year $1.40/L x 75L x 5d x 52w = $27300 year per truck per year. I spent $44k on fuel from March to Dec 31 for one truck. The company I worked for had 10 gravel trucks and 4 tractor/live bottoms trailers. They were spending $50k a month on fuel. So every little bit counts. Not to mention more power is more stress and that leads to shorter engine life

Input: ‘87 BC-IV 400. Dynoed it at the dealer and was putting 335 hp to the ground! WHAT!!! I said! Yep, it’s within specs! Waited ‘til the warranty expired then went from (I believe) a 22 button to a 10! Ran strong! Sold it at 265000, knew the guy, first OH at 300000! Another one I bought new, A BC-III ‘83 ran a little better from new. OH at about 375000 in stock trim. Put in the no. 10 button, the BC-III was a better running engine than the BC-IV. Ran very well except that in needed an OH at about every 150000 after the no. 10 button was installed!!! Sold it at 900000 with a fresh OH. This may shed some light on why you don’t want put too much fuel to these older Cummins. As a plus, they are cheap and quick to OH. Did an inframe with new heads in a 24 hr stretch. (yea the good old days) And, if can remember right, was less than $2000 in parts. These are great and economical engines if you can work on them yourself. Probably hard to find anyone willing!!! I drove a souped up Cummins powered truck in the late 90s. The specific setup was a 444 BC-4 mated to a double over 13 with 3.55 rears turning 11r24.5 rubber. The pump injectors pistons heads and turbocharger were setup for 850 at the crankshaft. The maximum we got on a dyno run was 720 at the rears then the dyno broke with fuel pressure left to feed the engine. To give you an idea of the power of this beast we called Rose in Pennsylvania there's a nice pull on 80 called Snowshoe. I was going west heading back to Illinois with honey out of Philly we avoided the turnpike even then way to expensive. Well I'm at the bottom a steel hauler with a 550 Cat goes 100 bucks to anyone behind me that can pass me. I dropped half a gear into 11th and floored the go pedal. The other drivers I passed said I had a little black smoke rolling my right front almost picked up and she was screaming like a 747 at takeoff as I caught him. I started a half mile behind him and was 3 tons heavier in gross weight. I ate his Cat for dinner and Rose got polished that weekend thanks to that moron.

Why are we so concerned with a 500+ hp number when we still only have a 12-1400 tq. Number?
@BenjaminEsposti6 жыл бұрын
Well if you want to go fast you need HP. If you want to pull a lot of weight, you need torque (or at least a very low gear). If you want to pull a lot of weight and go fast (or accelerate quickly), you need more torque _AND_ HP.

@@railfan8895 so basically they were forced to moved the loads through gearing in the older rigs where as now my 450hp rig is considered dry van spec with 1650 lb. Ft. Torque
@Sevalecan5 жыл бұрын
@@kendricpowell2780 That's not actually true(I think there's a huge misconception about torque on the internet)... As Benjamin said, if you want to pull a lot of weight and go fast, you need torque /and/ horsepower. 2000 ft-lbs of torque at 5 horsepower will move the load, but it'll do it very slowly. Your time to maximum speed and rate of acceleration will be determined primarily by horsepower, not torque. Really, you just need torque at the wheels, not the engine(Maximum pulling force, from wheel torque, determines whether you can overcome enough friction to get the load rolling, horsepower determines how much of this rolling resistance your engine can overpower at a time. More power means more speed). Gear down a high-power, high-rpm engine enough and it'll move a semi truck load without issue. The problem is that it probably won't make 2 million+ miles at that same power level, and it'll be way less efficient due to the increased frictional losses at high RPMs. Gearboxes simply trade RPM for torque and vice versa. Horsepower is a product of the two, and stays constant through gear reduction (in an ideal world of course).

NTC475 compound turbo with larger injectors was capable of greater power, however the fuel pump isn't rated for more. That's why the KTA was rated from 1550 foot pounds to 1950 foot pounds of torque. The fuel pump on the KTA 19 was rated for higher pressure. Now the step timing on the N444x and mechanical N14 both had issues with the timing and the fuel pumps weren't meant for more than 500 horse power. Would 500HP make the engine less reliable or something.
@MidwestSteven15 жыл бұрын
The big cams were only ever built for like 450, so initially no it wouldn't but overtime it would become less reliable and more prone to breakage.

How is your egt down around 750, and a one tone dodge 3500 egts are over a 1000? Maybe I just don’t know enough about big rig engines.

jtaylorls1 the pyro is probably in the downpipe and your dodge pyro is in the manifold making it seem like it’s running hotter

Torque is weak here.. Many stock 80's vintage mechanical engines putting out 1400 ft lbs... unmodified.

stc's were junk . why would anyone put that system back on?????

STC engines were superior to anything else at the time if you took the time to learn about them. I also thought they way too complicated to own. Had 1in '87 Binder 9670. Got awesome fuel mileage, longevity AND made alot of 3406b trucks cry.
